Chapter 203
Chapter 203
Marina tried to act chill as she picked up her glass and knocked back the beer in one go. But staring at the empty glass, she felt oddly unsatisfied.
Daron was never into barbecue, but tonight he’d had a few just to keep Marína company.
He glanced at his watch, finished off his glass of red wine in one gulp, and said quietly, “Take your time eating. I’m going to wash up.
Marina nodded, watching as Daron got up from his seat and walked toward the bedroom.
Once she heard the door close, Marina’s eyes landed on the red wine sitting in the decanter.
She thought, ‘Red wine can’t just sit out too long after it has been decanted, or the flavor would fade away.
Daron had opened a whole bottle and only drank two glasses. What a waste.
He’d mentioned earlier that this wine is low in alcohol, so it is just right for women.
If it’s not that strong, it should be fine to have a bit.’
Marina’s hesitation melted away. She grabbed the decanter and filled her glass to the brim.
This red wine was seriously good. So smooth, it was almost like drinking juice.
She’d have to ask Daron how to buy it, so next time she could bring a bottle back to Vrufield for Elnora to try.
Daron stepped out of the bedroom in his bathrobe after freshening up.
He saw Marina, her cheeks flushed and her eyes glazed over with that unmistakable tipsy look.
She sat there all obedient, elbows on the table, chin cupped in her hands, just staring at him like he was the only thing in the
world.
Her glass was empty, and the decanter was completely drained.
Daron’s eyebrow twitched. When he’d gone to wash up, there’d still been two–thirds of the wine left.
Marina was a lightweight to begin with. After a whole bottle of beer and then all that extra red wine, there was no way she wasn’t drunk.
He walked over to the table, picked up the decanter, and looked at her.
You drank all this?” he asked.
Marina nodded obediently, her eyes all soft and glassy.
‘Yeah. It’s really good. Where did you get it? I want to get some for Elnora too,” she said.
Daron set the decanter back on the table, catching her unwavering gaze. With a rare warmth in his voice, he replied, “It’s from the Zamora family’s winery. I’ll have someone send a few cases over to the Finley family next time.”
Marina blinked, a little stunned. She hadn’t expected Daron to be so agreeable. He was so gentle, it almost felt like she was dreaming.

She bit her lip, her eyes growing misty before she even realized it.
“You’re so nice,” she murmured.
Daron was tidying up the mess on the table. For a second, she honestly couldn’t tell if this was real life or just some dream.
His gentle gaze was exactly like the Daron from her dreams.
In her dreams, Daron was her husband.
She could shamelessly call him “hubby” and be as affectionate as she wanted.
Marina gave her head a little pat, trying to snap herself out of it. Then she pushed herself up from her chair, wanting to help him clean up.
She thought, I’m just a guest here. No way I could let myself be a bother to him?
“Let me do it,” she said.
As she spoke, she bent down, reaching for the trash can.
But as soon as she leaned forward, Daron wrapped an arm around her waist, keeping her from tumbling straight to the floor.
A trace of exasperation flashed in his deep eyes. He set down the trash and helped her sit back down.
“Be good and just sit tight, don’t make a mess,” Daron said.
Marina was guided back into her seat. She looked up at Daron, and as he started to pull his hand away from her waist, she grabbed his arm.
“Are you mad at me?” she asked.
Daron lowered his gaze, and when his eyes met her soft, misty eyes, he stilled for a moment.
He didn’t answer, just kept looking at her.
“Daron, are you mad at me?” Marina asked again.
She didn’t get an answer, so she wouldn’t let it go.
“Don’t be mad, okay?” she added.
For a moment, Daron felt his heart skip a beat.
His voice unconsciously softened as he reached out and gave her head a gentle rub. “I’m not mad.”
Marina stared at his gentle face, just sitting there, lost in thought for a long while.
She thought, ‘Guess I really am dreaming.
‘Daron in real life? No way he’d ever treat me this sweet.
Usually, I have to be super careful around him, always watching out for all those little traps he likes to set.
‘One slip and I’d fall right in, he’d get all annoyed. I have to be cautious always.

Marina sat there obediently, waiting for Daron to clear the table.
she felt her head was getting heavier by the second, the booze hitting her hard. The whole room felt like it was spinning
Daron cleared the table and dropped the trash by the door.
When he came back, he saw Marina was already asleep, slumped over the table.
He walked over and looked down at her sleeping peacefully,
Ten years had gone by, and all that youthful innocence had vanished from her face. The bubbly sweetness she once had was nowhere to be found.
Now, she was all composure and stubborn.
Daron reached out and brushed a stray lock of hair from her cheek. The moment his fingertips grazed her skin, his breath went a little uneven.
He could still picture the first time he saw Marina at the Gross family’s house. He was leaning on the second–floor balcony when Finn elbowed him and chuckled.
He teased, “That’s the fiancée Harris picked out for you.
“She is really a beauty. When she grows up, she’ll be more than a match for you. You’d better keep her close, or someone else might snatch her away.”
Back then, Daron just rolled his eyes at Finn, totally unimpressed. ‘As I’d ever lose my head over a girl, he thought, full of disdain.
He glanced down at the lively, adorable Marina below, but those deep eyes of his stayed as calm as ever.
Her smile lit up the whole place, totally carefree and full of a bubbly vibe.
Maybe she caught on to the way he was checking her out from upstairs.
She looked up and shot them a grin that could melt anyone’s heart.
Her voice was like music, light and sweet.
“Finn!” she called out.
Her eyes were very bright and sparkling.
Daron deliberately looked away, acting like he didn’t see a thing.
Kids born into rich families had to slog through endless knowledge and finance lessons. Even as little kids, they were already scheming, way too grown–up for their age.
Everyone else had their guard up, always scheming, but she was just wide open, not a single hidden agenda in sight.
‘She looks like the type who’d get deceived by some guy,‘ Daron thought.
She was like a vibrant flower, radiating energy and life. So dazzling, she could light up any room.
No wonder Elnora always shot him those looks like she couldn’t stand the sight of him whenever she heard about his engagement to Marina, even calling him a cradle–snatcher right to his face.

If he had a little sister like that, he’d never want her getting roped into an engagement at such a young age. Especially not with some guy five years older, who was all about playing mind games and keeping secrets.
