Chapter 86
Kane’s POV
*F**k!” I breathed out, as the cold night air hit me like a slap the moment I had pulled myself out of the shaft and onto the grass,
I had almost forgot how cold it had been out here tonight….
The moist earth pressed against my back as I laid flat for a second to ensure that I hadn’t alerted any of our enemy.
A wild silence hung thick in the air – only the kind that hums before a deadly fight is set to begin.
I remained low, eyes scanning the tree line just ahead, where the flicker of firelight danced orange and gold between the dark spires of pine.
Shadows moved and laughter could be heard, as my hands balled up in to fists at the sound.
They thought they were safe – probably mocking us all for trying.
But they had no idea what was crawling up right from under their feet…
I leaned back over the edge of the grate, whispering down, voice low and sharp.
‘It’s clear but move up slow. One at a time. Have one of them take the girl back to the compound through the tunnel – it’s the safest way to get her away from this!” I instruct, as each of them nodded.
Seth was the first to climb out after me, silent and efficient. Then Viktor. Then Kion. All grim–faced after the burning silver coated poles.
No one spoke as I pointed towards their location between the trees.
We were wolves on the hunt now, and it felt good having them cornered like this…
When the last man pulled himself up, I peered down to see the last of our group lifting the woman up gently into his arms, her head lolling weakly against his chest, before I turned back toward the trees.
Time to finish what we came here for…
I signaled to the rest of them, and we started to move closer.
Silent.
Lethal.
“We keep him alive… but slaughter the rest!” I whisper back, as Kion’s gaze burned with a longing to stop his brother once and for all – a look I had never seen in a man before…
The wet ground barely whispered under our boots as we circled wide, using the trees for cover. The fire ahead became clearer now around the flames as six of them sat upon thick tree logs.
–
a crude ring of stones
One of them had a bottle in hand, laughing harshly in the language I frustratedly couldn’t recognise but it was certainly a drunken slur.

Arrogant.
Like this was a party of some sort they were at. Like this whole ordeal wasn’t built on the back of pain and suffering.
I scanned each one quickly.
But there was still no sign of Dimitri.
I had memorised his face from his dark shaved receding hairline to his fat bashed in nose – taken from the picture Kion had shown me back at his pack.
Glancing again at each one of them carefully as their faces lit up in the fire only confirmed that he definitely wasn’t seated with them, so where the fuck
was he?!
Their scents were everywhere – thick with blood, smoke, and sweat. I could practically taste the violence radiating from them.
I moved steadily back towards Kion, crouching down behind a thick stump just a few feet from the edge of their firelight.
“He’s not there!” I whisper to him, irritated once again that our target was nowhere in sight.
But as I repositioned myself slightly, I spotted it
– a large red structure on the opposite side of them.
It seemed to be some sort of shipping container as I could barely see the door that sat slightly ajar.
Another prison?
Another cage?
Another rat hole for him to hide in most likely!
My jaw clenched as I felt the darkness rising in
my chest again – that familiar, poisonous rage that begged to be let loose once and for all.
“We should get to him first, before ambushing the others… wouldn’t want to alert him and give him another chance to scurry off…” I recite my thought process, as Kion hummed with a nod.
I narrowed my eyes, fixated on the rusted red container like the wolf I am – locked on its prey.
He was in there. I could feel it.
Every instinct in me screamed it.
The others around the fire were relaxed
too relaxed for this to be a fully active guard post.
These men were just here to kill time, to laugh and drink and wait. Like lapdogs lounging outside their master’s den.
I leaned closer to Kion, voice like a blade.
“We will go for the container. The others will wait before they hit the rest of them once we are in. I want them all done in seconds, understand?” My tone was certain.
Kion nodded again, eyes burning with vengeance, but he was still calm and impressively controlled.

‘We leave Dimitri to you,” I add last, the promise in my voice sharp enough to cut through steel.
He gave a single, satisfied nod, then turned and moved back through the trees, flanking left to inform Viktor of the new strategy as I quickly mind linked
Seth.
The container was maybe thirty yards away easy enough to get to undetected and so I waited for Kion to return, on edge and raring to go, and the second he did we made our move towards it.
Our steps were controlled as we held back on shifting in to our wolf forms for as long as we could, conserving our energy and strength in preparation for the
real battle…
When we reached the back corner of the container, I paused, hand on the side of it.
I could feel the faintest vibration through the rusted steel.
Movement.
There was definitely someone inside…
I sucked in a breath and forced the rage down deep. I needed to be smart right now. Not fast. Not loud. Not hot headed.
Just smart.
I pressed on carefully down the side of it, before reaching around to the front with Kion at my back.
My eyes adjusted quickly in the dark as I peered through the small gap, catching the faint flicker of an oil lamp somewhere from inside.
And then… voices.
Russian sobs and pleas…
Another woman?
Bastard!
I feared for the noise the door would make when we would rush in, but knew there was no other way now…
The others were in position and ready to go before any of Dimitri’s men could even attempt to save him… and so I drew in a slow deep breath.
I glanced over my shoulder at Kion, who gave me a final nod with his head, and within seconds I had shifted in to my large wolf – paws thumping against the dirt with Kion quickly shifting behind me.
GO! I mind–linked Seth, giving their team the signal, before I used my teeth to haul open the rusted container door – giving us entry straight in to the belly
of the beast!
