No time was wasted.
During the day, she cleared about 20 acres of no–man’s–land along the highway, wiping out all the wandering zombies in her territory and scavenging a modest haul of supplies.
Most of it came from vehicles involved in accidents.
She collected four and a half sacks of wheat, half a sack of flour, and five boxes of instant mac and cheese. Spoiled meat, vegetables, and bread went straight to waste. The haul wasn’t huge.
But the point reward was impressive.
It was 2000 points.
The conversion rate seemed to be roughly a thousand points
per ten acres.
Residential buildings counted for more points, which was why cleaning up the villa district yesterday had earned her over 3000 points, even though that area was smaller than today’s stretch of no–man’s-land.
In just a few days, Iris had expanded her territory four or five times over, racking up nearly 7000 points.

Her AK was within reach.
Just as she was about to cash in her points, a cluster of red dots suddenly appeared on her territory map.
Red dots?
Zombies were gray.
Iris froze for a split second before reacting.
There were living intruders.
And they were in the area just outside her bunker, moving straight toward it.
Without hesitation, she jumped into her vehicle with her dogs
and raced back.
“Captain, hang on a little longer. According to the map, there should be a bunker ahead!”
“I don’t like the feel of this place.”
A group of seven or eight men, dressed in standard combat uniforms, moved through the woods outside the bunker. The deeper they went, the stranger it felt.

The group of men, most of them nursing fresh wounds, moved cautiously forward, their conversation trailing off abruptly.
Ahead of them stood a massive warning sign: [Private Property. Beware of Dogs.]
The men went silent.
“Look over there!”
One of them had sharp eyes, and he caught a flash of silver that streaked past.
He hurried a few steps forward, brushing aside the thick undergrowth. Pushing past several rows of dense trees, he finally laid eyes on a perfectly hidden base.
The sight of the fortified compound left everyone stunned.
A towering ten–feet–high wall of iron mesh encircled the area, its top bristling with razor–sharp Okinawa blades. Beneath the cold gleam of the metal, countless hidden wire blades waited like silent predators.

At the center stood a massive steel door, ten feet high. Its thickness alone could stop a tank.
Inside the iron mesh, verdant crops flourished. Chickens, ducks, and goats roamed in pens. Fruit trees grew in neat rows, and a fish pond shimmered in the sunlight.
Was this a paradise?
The sheer scale of the defenses, the overflowing supplies–it
was like something out of a storybook utopia.
“There has to be someone inside! I’ll go get her help!” the man shouted, charging forward.
Just then, his captain warned, “Watch out!”
But it was too late.
With a sudden thud, the soldier fell face–first into a trap. By the time everyone registered what had happened, he had disappeared into a hidden pit.
The other soldiers screamed his name and sprinted to the edge of the trap.
Peering down, they saw the trap’s deadly mechanics. There were steel spikes, and massive bear traps lined the pit.

Carefully, the rest of the team worked around the trap and managed to haul him to safety.
Just as they got him out, a pack of dogs burst through a small side gate of the base.
“Woof! Woof! Woof!”
Eight or nine ferocious dogs, led by a massive, savage black shepherd, formed a tight circle around them.
Summer glared at the intruders, baring long fangs and unsheathing sharp claws.
At this moment, the men finally understood the meaning of the warning: [Beware of Dogs.]
These weren’t just dogs.
