Freda’s POV

“I… I wouldn’t dare to defy Your Majesty,” Christie stuttered, bowing in respect. “But perhaps, since you’re so generously offering, I could
accept a small portion.”
“Good,” I grinned happily. Grabbing the carving knife and a fork, I sliced a generous portion of the roast peacock, including a drumstick
for good measure.
“Here you go,” I placed the plate in her trembling hands.
Christie was practically drooling, staring at the plate with a gaze of longing. The aroma of the roasted bird filled the air and soon, her stomach started to rumble once more and her cheeks flushed out of embarrassment.
“I… uh…” She said, conflicted.
“No buts, Christie,” I said, patting the spot next to me on the plush bed. “Eat up. We can’t have the new Queen’s friend fainting from
hunger, can we?”
Christie hesitated for a moment, then a small smile blossomed on her face. She nodded shyly and settled beside me on the bed. Grabbing a peacock drumstick, her teeth sank into the juicy flesh and cut a chunk. She chewed with a dreamy expression on her face and when she swallowed, it was as if she wanted to melt.
‘Well? How is it?” I asked with a smirk.
“It’s… heavenly,” she said as she continued to munch on the drumstick.
“That’s a nice way to describe food,” I laughed. “Come on, let’s dig in.”
Our focus turned to the feast before us and we devoured it with gusto. I thought I was a foodie, but when I saw how Christie ate, I couldn’t help but gasp. She consumed food like a vacuum cleaner, sucking it in without even chewing.
In the end, I ate to my satisfaction and watched the little girl finish the meal. Nothing was spared, not even the bones. She licked them
clean and munched on them like biscuits. It was hilarious.
After eating, she patted her stomach. A satisfied expression on her face.
“Are you full?” I asked with a teasing smile.
She seemed to remember she was in my presence as she suddenly jerked up and gave a small bow.
“Thank you so much for the meal, Your Majesty,” I felt the gratitude in her voice oozing out.

Chapter 43
“It’s no trouble,” I waved it off. “I’m curious, why haven’t you eaten at this time? Don’t maids eat here?”
Christie’s gaze turned alert and her eyes darted towards the floor. She was definitely nervous to tell me what’s up.
“It’s alright, you can trust me,” I coaxed her.
After a few minutes, she nodded and started to speak.

“Maids only get to eat twice a day,” she mumbled, “sometimes just once. And even then, it’s usually scraps from the royal kitchens. It gets
worse if we make a mistake.”
“What happens if they make a mistake?” I pressed on.
“Then they might not get fed at all,” Christie’s eyes welled up with tears. “The other maids… they know I’m different. They call me names
and… trip me up on purpose.”
I felt a surge of anger stirring inside me at this injustice. I mean, it wasn’t much different than my story, but I had Kara beside me. I was
sure Christie had no one and she had been suffering for a long time now.
I stood up from the bed and enveloped her in a warm embrace which left her stunned.
