Chapter 47 Increased Production
Having a few buildings outside meant Logan could live near the bunker entrance and act as a sentry, keeping watch over the entire base’s security.
After Iris finished giving orders outside, she headed back into the bunker to sleep.
That was when Tyler spoke up. “Iris, how’s Damon doing?”
“Still out cold.” Before coming outside, Iris had checked on
Damon and he was still unconscious. She found it a little strange herself. Why hadn’t he woken up yet?
She’d examined his injuries and checked his breathing though. His wounds had mostly healed and his breathing was normal. He just looked like he was sleeping peacefully.
“Can you let us take care of Damon outside then? We’ll look after him!”
“Absolutely not.” Iris shot that down immediately.
Damon was her hostage. She had a whole group of people in her territory who didn’t work for her, and there was no way she could trust them completely. Like they’d said before, what if they decided to run and took Logan with them?

These guys clearly had strong bonds with each other and were fiercely loyal to Damon. She’d already tried poaching Logan while Damon was unconscious and gotten nowhere. There was a real chance that once Damon woke up, he’d convince Logan
to leave with them.
She needed to stay on guard.
Iris didn’t see this as some kind of test for Logan’s loyalty either. A test was supposed to be a pleasant surprise in a desperate situation, not an opportunity she carelessly handed to someone else because she got sloppy.
Human nature didn’t need testing. The smart move was to keep Logan away from having to make that kind of impossible choice in the first place.
So no, letting them take Damon outside to watch over him? That was completely off the table.
“We don’t even know if our captain’s okay!”
“If you’re worried, ask Logan.” Iris didn’t bother explaining further and just walked off.
Everyone was used to her attitude by now.
“I’ve never met a woman like her in my entire life!” Derek grumbled the second her back was turned.

“How many women have you actually met though?” The others grinned at him.
“Doesn’t matter! I’ve never seen anyone so cold–blooded and
mean with zero feminine qualities whatsoever! Once Damon wakes up, just watch, I’m gonna…”
“Gonna what?” Logan looked at him.
“I’m running as fast as I can and never looking back! I swear I’ll never see her again in this lifetime!”
“Hah!” Everyone burst out laughing.
“Why are you guys laughing? Am I wrong?” Derek pouted like a kid, his young face full of indignation. “You’re telling me when the captain wakes up, you’re not gonna bolt too?”
“Oh we’re running for sure!”
“You got that right!”
After they finished laughing, they all turned to Logan. “Hey man, you gotta take good care of Damon for us.”
“Trust me, Iris really did heal him. I saw it with my own eyes. He just needs a few more days of rest.”

“Alright, we’re counting on you then.”
“Got it.”
Two days flew by. Iris took advantage of having extra manpower around and decided to give her bunker base a complete overhaul.
First up was Logan’s living quarters, which were finally finished. She’d built him a simple structure made of corrugated metal and wood. It was positioned perfectly so he could look after all the chickens, ducks, fish, and vegetables while also serving as the first line of defense for the bunker entrance.
Next, Iris had the chicken and duck coops completely renovated and expanded. She sent all these freeloaders up the mountain to chop wood and weave branches and vines together, then had them rebuild the makeshift coops she’d thrown together before. Military guys really could do anything, it turned out.
On top of that, she replanned the entire vegetable and fruit garden and doubled the amount of farmland.
Before, she’d just scattered seeds everywhere without any real planning, so the space around the bunker wasn’t being used efficiently at all.
This time, she reorganized everything properly, and the base’s 4/6

food production was going to multiply several times over.
The fish and shrimp ponds got redug too. They excavated a deep pit about fifteen feet down next to the old pond, then redirected the water from the original pond to expand the whole thing. Giving the fish and shrimp more room to grow would boost their numbers significantly.
These guys worked fast and got things done efficiently. Iris was pretty satisfied with the results.
During the day, she sent Logan out with three others to expand her territory while the remaining crew stayed back to renovate the base. She fed them two meals a day for their work.
Yep. As a proper landowner, Iris figured two meals were plenty for temporary laborers who weren’t sticking around. No need for three squares a day.
But for her permanent worker? She made him a fancy breakfast right in front of everyone. The favoritism was blatant and she didn’t even try to hide it.
Iris had always been fiercely protective of her own people. She made zero effort to hide the fact that she had completely different standards for insiders versus outsiders.
Derek and the others were gradually getting used to it. Iris was cold–blooded, ruthless, and shamelessly biased, and she didn’t 5/6

apologize for any of it.
But honestly, having someone like that as their boss wasn’t so bad. In fact, it was pretty damn good. No question about it.
That evening, when Logan and the others returned from their mission, they each drove back a vehicle. Every single one of them was a massive delivery truck!
