“Leave.” I dismissed the guards upon reaching my father’s cell. He looked thinner, and his injuries from the duel seemed to be healing with difficulty. I stared at his disheveled state, and not once did I feel any pity for him.
Hello, brother. Not exactly how I expected our next visit to be. Looks like you’ve made yourself comfortable here.” Kieran’s voice dripped
with mockery.
My father finally raised his head to look at us. The menace in his stare brought a smirk to my face. How the mighty had fallen.
I moved back to give my uncle room to talk not so far that I couldn’t hear, but far enough that I didn’t have to smell the foul odor of
blood and urine surrounding the cage.
“Don’t be surprised. I heard the news the moment I arrived, how your son challenged you to a duel for the throne and succeeded. I wonder what the werewolves are saying about you. They’re probably drinking and laughing while mocking you.”
My father snickered. He was least interested in my uncle’s visit. His eyes sought mine.
“I heard Andros is dead.”
He glared at me. I chuckled.
“News travels to the dungeon quickly. Yes, I killed him. And if you’re wondering, I appointed a new right–hand man.”
“Hmm. Let me guess someone from the werewolf kingdom? I wouldn’t put it past you to do something like that.”
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw interest spark in Uncle Kieran’s face. I had to stop the conversation before Father revealed the main
reason for his imprisonment.
“We should leave.” My uncle nodded.
“Be careful, Kieran. This one has learned the habit of killing family members. You should stay awake even in your sleep and remain
watchful.”
I chuckled at Father’s words.
“Not everyone will challenge me, Father.”
He tugged on his chains, trying to launch himself at me, but couldn’t reach.
“Steve didn’t challenge you, yet you cut off his head like he was an animal meant for slaughter!”
In an instant, I was at the bars, holding him by the neck as I pulled him off the ground.

Chapter 55
“You’re the reason he’s dead! You! If you hadn’t pushed him to be something you wanted, Steve might still be alive. You’re the one
murdering family members! I threw him to the ground, where he curled into himself, coughing for what felt like minutes.

“Until I have the strength to do away with you, enjoy your stay here. I walked out with Kieran following behind, I shouldn’t have lost my
temper, but my father had a talent for infuriating me.
“Damien, you’re bleeding.”
I looked at my hand to see blood seeping from my wrist. Father must have scratched me while I was choking him.
“I’ll take care of it. And it’s no longer Damien to you, but Your Highness.”
I corrected him as we made our way out of the dungeon toward the main castle. I wanted to see Freda. Only she could improve my foul
mood.
I was close to my chambers when I saw Elara walking out angrily.
“Your Highness.” She stopped when she reached me. I excused myself from my uncle and pulled her aside to speak privately.
“What is it?”
She frowned. “Your queen, I—”
“She’s going to be your queen as well, Elara.”
“She’s going to be difficult to work with. She’s filled with fire and temper that I cannot teach out of her, and I—”
“You don’t have a choice, Elara. Remember the reason you’re doing this. This arrangement was never free, so do your part as I intend to do mine!” She could tell I was angry and remained silent. With a quick nod, she excused herself.
An oath was an oath.
