Chapter 99
When Sophie heard Logan was looking for her, she didn’t dare waste a second and hurried upstairs.
She knocked softly on the door and said in a gentle voice, “Sir, are you looking for me?”
“Yes, come in,” Logan replied.
Hearing Logan’s response, Sophic gently pushed open the door and stepped inside.
As Sophie entered, Logan finally tore his gaze away from Samuel.
Looking up at Sophie, Logan asked seriously, “Has anything seemed off about Samuel since he came back from the hospital?
“Why are his eyes so swollen again?”
Hearing Logan’s question, Sophie didn’t try to hide anything and quickly explained, “After I picked Samuel up from the hospital, Ms. Hewitt said she’d take care of him.
“Samuel used to be close with Ms. Hewitt, and at first, he was fine with her looking after him. I made sure to remind Ms. Hewitt about the doctor’s instructions, then went downstairs to prepare his medicine.
“But I’d barely gotten downstairs when I suddenly heard Samuel crying his eyes out.
“I was shocked and rushed back upstairs.
“He was really upset, crying and fussing nonstop, but Ms. Hewitt said he was probably just not feeling well, and insisted on looking after him herself, telling me to go take care of other things.
“After I left, I was still worried, so I circled back to check on him. But it was strange. Mr. Samuel wasn’t crying or making a peep after that.
“I just thought Ms. Hewitt must really know how to handle kids, so I didn’t give it another thought.
“Sir, is something wrong?”
Logan shook his head lightly. “It’s nothing, just wanted to check. Go ahead and finish making his medicated soup. He’ll have to take it as soon as he wakes up.”
Sophie replied and walked out of the room.
But as Sophie left the room, Logan held Samuel’s small hand, his heart twisting with worry for the little guy.
When he saw the clear bruise on Samuel’s arm, a flash of anger flickered in Logan’s eyes. He couldn’t help it.
He’d actually noticed it earlier, but hadn’t considered what it might mean at the time.
Samuel had been in a rough mood these days because of his post–surgery recovery, so it was possible he’d hurt himself during one of his meltdowns.

But after hearing Sophie’s explanation, Logan knew he hadn’t been imagining things after all. Those marks were clearly from someone pinching him, not just an accident.
Otherwise, there was no way Samuel would’ve just stopped crying out of nowhere.
Logan’s brows knitted tighter as he thought about it.
He should’ve known it all along. Isabella had no clue how to take care of a kid, and she didn’t care about Samuel the way she acted as she did.
There was no way Samuel would ever be left in her hands again.
Just as Logan was deep in thought, Samuel suddenly burst into tears, crying out, “Don’t hit Samuel, don’t hit me, no, don’t hit me…”
He kept kicking his legs restlessly as he sobbed, clearly trapped in a nightmare.
Seeing him like this, Logan hurried over, bending down to comfort him, “Samuel, it’s okay, Daddy’s here. Wake up, buddy, did you have a nightmare?”
As he spoke, Logan gently shook Samuel, trying to comfort him.
Samuel struggled awake from his nightmare, and as soon as he realized it was Logan, he burst out crying.
But then, as if something clicked in his mind, he abruptly stopped sobbing and scanned the room anxiously.
Seeing Samuel like this, Logan’s heart twisted painfully, his face draining of color from the ache.
He softened his voice, looking at Samuel, and said, “Samuel, don’t be afraid. Daddy’s here now. No one can hurt you anymore. I’ll keep you safe.”
Samuel nodded, wrapped his little arms around Logan’s neck, and said in a trembling voice, “Daddy, I miss Mommy. I want to call her.”
Logan froze for a moment when he heard that.
But he quickly recovered and nodded. “Of course, Samuel. If you miss Mommy, you can call her. She’ll always be your mom, that will never change.”
Logan honestly never thought there’d come a day when Samuel would actually want to call Eliana on his own. But if this could help mend things between him and Eliana, then that was definitely a win.
So, Logan got Samuel’s smartwatch for him right away.
Samuel took the watch and didn’t hesitate for a second. He dialed Eliana’s number right away.
Her phone started ringing while Eliana was driving home.
Seeing Samuel’s name pop up on the screen, Eliana couldn’t help but feel a little suspicious, but she picked up without a second thought.

“Mommy…” As soon as the call connected, Samuel’s voice came over the line, choked with sobs.
Eliana frowned in concern, but she replied softly, “What’s wrong, Samuel?”
“Mommy, I miss you. Can you come back and spend some time with me?” Samuel’s voice sounded so small and pitiful over the phone,
Hearing that, Eliana glanced down at the display on her dashboard. She almost thought it was a wrong number from another kid.
She double–checked the screen, making sure it was really Samuel, then asked, “Samuel, did something happen?”
“I just miss you, Mommy. When are you coming back?” Samuel’s voice was small and choked with emotion. He still didn’t know that Eliana and Logan were in the middle of a divorce.
Like Logan, Samuel just assumed Eliana would come home once she finished being mad, so he asked when she’d be back.
But when Eliana heard Samuel’s words, she couldn’t help but frown.
She let out a soft sigh and decided to be honest with him.
Even though Samuel was still little, the way he cried and asked for a new mom before made it seem like he understood a lot more than she thought, so she figured it was better to be honest.
Thinking that, Eliana spoke seriously, “Samuel, listen. Mommy isn’t coming back because Mommy and Daddy are getting divorced. Daddy’s going to have a new wife, and you’ll have a new mom, too.
“So, Mommy can’t really come see you right now, Samuel. But if you’d like…”
“Why are you saying all that to him?” Logan jumped in, unable to hold back before Eliana could finish.
Logan’s face darkened in an instant as he spoke into the phone, his tone sharp with accusation.
“Eliana, we’re not even divorced yet. Even if we were, you would always be Samuel’s mom. Is it really a problem for him to want you to come see him?
“Do you really have to be so harsh about it?”
Eliana couldn’t help but roll her eyes at Logan’s words.
She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself before saying, “I was about to explain things to Samuel, but you just had to grab the phone from me.
“Logan, have you conveniently forgotten? You and your mom kept telling me, over and over, that I’d never get to see Samuel again for the rest of my life.
“When you used Samuel to threaten me, did you ever stop thinking that I was his mother? Do I have the right to see my own kid?”
