Chapter 9
I got in touch with a lawyer as quickly as possible and sent the divorce agreement to Lucius, who, to my surprise, signed it immediately without even looking through it.
I thought about it and mused that Lucius was probably still being held by Ethan, who must have pressured him into signing the divorce agreement. In the end, with the help of both Ethan and the court, I was able to finalize the divorce in record time.
I felt a massive weight lift off my shoulders once the divorce was finalized. I wasn’t in a rush to return home, so I decided to stick around for a few days and enjoy what the city had to offer.
I thought it was a really bizarre turn of events. I had initially come to this city to spend my honeymoon with Lucius, yet I found myself traveling solo the moment we landed.
It was a few days later when Ethan reached out and offered to be my guide. I needed one anyway, so we just naturally started hanging out and exploring together.
Ethan and I watched the sunset together on the beach, admired old masterpieces in museums, enjoyed picnics on expansive green lawns, and wandered down the city’s cobblestone streets.
It all led up to that moment in the sunset when Ethan suddenly grabbed my hand and, with flushed cheeks, whispered his confession to me.
Ethan and I naturally ended up together. Grace was absolutely delighted when she heard the news. She was so over the moon that she seemed ready to rush us both to an altar the very next day.
I didn’t see Lucius again until we were in court six months later. He was a shadow of his former self, haggard and forced to use a crutch because of a crippled leg. In the months since we parted, his company had folded entirely and had been bought out by Ethan.
Lucius looked at me with a spark of desperate hope, begging for my assistance. That look vanished the second he saw my hand in Ethan’s. His features twisted into a mask of fury, and he tried to charge at us despite being restrained. “How could you move on to him so fast? You’re really nothing but a gold digger, Zoe!”
He was immediately subdued by the police officers, and before long, he was sentenced to three years behind bars for assault and disturbing public order. He would have nothing left by the time he completed his sentence–left to the streets with nothing to his name.
I didn’t see Belinda once during the entire trial. It wasn’t until I got home and asked Ethan that I found out that she had become mentally deranged due to a miscarriage and had been admitted to a psychiatric hospital quite some time ago.
Ethan explained briefly, “I had nothing to do with it. Belinda’s miscarriage was the result of a fight she had with Lucius while they were locked up together. Lucius kicked her in the stomach in a fit of rage, and the baby was already gone by the time she reached the hospital.”
“Lucius and Belinda got exactly what was coming to them,” I said, reassuring Ethan, who pulled me close. He wrapped his arms around my waist as if he never wanted to let go.
“Grandma called again a moment ago to press us about the wedding. She insists on personally picking out a wedding dress for you,” Ethan explained.
‘I couldn’t help but laugh as I pictured Grace’s persistent nagging. “I’ll head to the bridal salon with her later to check out some wedding dresses, then.”

Ethan hurriedly said, “I’m coming with you guys.”
“Alright,” I said with a smile.

I noticed the sunset fading slowly outside the window, painting the sky in a gentle shade of orange. I was certain that we had a long life ahead of us and so much time to spend by each other’s side.
