Joyce’s face froze for a second. She looked up at Daron, her eyes full of confusion. “Daron, you…”
Daron gave Joyce an icy look, his gaze carrying an undeniable authority, even though he wasn’t angry.
“Ms. Milner, you know perfectly well I never planned to get engaged to you. Stop giving our families the wrong idea, or you’ll just end up making things awkward for yourself,” he said.
A flash of shock crossed Joyce’s eyes, her complexion turning ghostly pale as she stared at Daron in utter disbelief.
“Daron, given the current situation, a marriage between us is the best choice for both families. I haven’t misled anyone, and Mr. Zamora is far too shrewd to be misled by a few words from me,” she said.
“At this moment, we’re the best choice for each other,” she added
Daron curled his lips into a cold, mocking smile and glanced at Joyce sideways, his eyes filled with open disdain.
Daron scoffed, “The best choice for each other?
“If we’re talking about running a household, those years you spent getting pushed into the Milner family, scrambling to catch up? That doesn’t even come close to what I’m looking for in a partner.
“And as for the outside world, the Milner family hasn’t given you any real power. You’ve got a few funds and trusts, but that doesn’t make you the best option for me.”
Joyce had never been hit with such a venomous assessment from Daron before. She bit down hard on her lip, her mind clouded with anger, and forgot all her usual composure.
“If I’m not the best choice, then what, Marina Finley is? The Finley family is basically broke now. Even one of the Milner family’s subsidiaries pulls in more profit than the entire Finley family ever could…” she shot back.
Daron cut her off. “And what does that have to do with you?”
Joyce frowned. “What?”
Daron’s face was expressionless. “What does the profit from the Milner family’s subsidiaries have to do with you?”
Joyce was left speechless by Daron’s words, a flicker of shock flashing in her eyes.
She wanted to protest that she was a Milner, so the profits from their subsidiaries should matter to her.
But then it hit her. She’d never worked a single day at any Milner Group.
Ever since she came back to the Milner family, her days had been filled with shopping trips and the occasional etiquette lesson.
The Milner family had never intended to groom her as their heir after bringing her back five years ago.
She’d been digging up all kinds of info on Marina and Elnora these days.
Elnora, no surprise, had been raised as the family heir by the old man since she was little.
Marina wasn’t meant to be the heir, but her grandfather had been taking her to fancy events and parties ever since she was a
kid.
Rumor had it, he wanted her to become an elite socialite, so he spent a fortune on her, even hiring etiquette teachers internationally.

Compared to them, Joyce’s five years with the Milner family might’ve looked glamorous, but honestly, it was all show and no
substance.
Daron had hit her so hard with his words, Joyce could barely get a word out. Her eyes were red with unshed tears as she ducked into the car.
The driver quickly shut the door for her.
The driver thought to himself, ‘I just need to get Ms. Milner out of this embarrassing scene as fast as possible,‘ and hurried back behind the wheel.
But Joyce wasn’t ready to let things end with Daron just yet.
She quickly rolled down the window, looked straight at Daron, her face serious and determined. “I haven’t been back with the Milner family for long, so I might not be up to your standards yet. But I’m still their only real daughter, and I…”
Daron stared at her, expressionless, and interrupted her before she could finish. “So that’s it? The only thing you can offer is being the Milner family’s daughter?”
Joyce tried to speak, but nothing came out.
Daron’s eyes were cold and unreadable as he stared back at her, giving nothing away.
Defeated and annoyed, Joyce snapped at the driver to get moving.
“What are you waiting for? Drive!” she barked.
Daron glanced away, unlocked his phone, and shot a quick message to Marina. [Don’t rush. Drive safe.]
He’d barely sent the text when Marina’s car rolled in from outside the lot.
Joyce noticed Marina’s car approaching, and a malicious glint flashed in her eyes. Without hesitation, she ordered the driver in a chilling tone.
“Ram her car,” she commanded coldly.
The driver couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He glanced in the rearview mirror, but didn’t move a muscle.
Joyce’s face contorted with fury, her expression turning downright vicious.
“Don’t you forget, you’re the Milner family’s driver, assigned to me! You do what I say, or you’re out of here for good,” she snapped.
The driver pulled the car over to the side of the road and turned to Joyce, his expression stern.
HE SAID, “Ms. Milner, please calm down.
“I’ll report everything that happened tonight to Mr. Milner. Ms. Milner, you need to understand. The Zamora family isn’t someone the Milner family can mess with lightly.”
Joyce sucked in a shaky breath, her face contorted with rage and humiliation.
She caught sight of herself in the rearview mirror. Her hands were balled into fists so tight her knuckles turned white.
She glanced back and saw Marina driving straight toward Daron Joyce gritted her teeth, refusing to look away until the last second.
“Drive,” she snapped.

No way was she letting go of Daron that easily.
No matter what she had to do, she was determined to marry him even if it meant going to any lengths.
Once the driver saw she’d gotten a grip on herself, he started the engine and drove off.

Marina pulled up in front of Daron, who was waiting by the curb Her eyes widened in surprise as she parked, and she was about to get out and open the door for him herself.
But Daron just hopped in, opening the passenger door on his own.
He buckled his seatbelt, checked the time, and said, “Silkwind Kitchen.”
Marina nodded, fired up the engine, and drove off toward Silkwind Kitchen.
“When Karissa asked what kind of position I could arrange for her at the company, I told her she could be a nutritionist for the lab researchers. Do you think that’s alright?” Marina asked.
As they drove, Marina picked up
the conve they’d
left unfinished on the phone.
Of course, she didn’t actually have the authority to make that kind of decision, but Karissa had put her on the spot. If she hadn’t answered right away, it would’ve looked like she wasn’t being genuine.
Daron nodded.
“That works,” he replied.
The whole point was Apollo.
Even if Apollo wanted to put Karissa on the payroll and she never even bothered to show up, Daron would still agree without a second thought.
Daron glanced at Marina, asking, “How did you manage to convince Apollo?”
When he went to see Apollo at lunchtime, he showed genuine sincerity, put forward generous terms, and even let Apollo set whatever conditions he wanted.
Still, Apollo wouldn’t give his consent.
Daron could clearly see Apollo’s passion for his career, but the moment work was mentioned, he’d immediately shut it down, refusing to negotiate on any terms at all.
Marina focused on the road ahead, her voice steady as she replied to Daron.
“I didn’t actually convince Apollo. I just stopped by to see Karissa” she said.
“And since they haven’t signed anything with the company yet, it’s not a done deal. In the end, it’s still up to you to make it happen, Mr. Zamora,” she added.
