Marina gazed out the window, letting out a quiet sigh. She didn’t notice that the man beside her had opened his eyes, his deep, brooding gaze fixed on her in the dim light

The driver pulled up outside the Zamora Group headquarters

Marina turned away from the window and glanced at Daron sitting next to her.

She had no idea when he’d opened his eyes

As soon as she looked at him, she realized he was already watching her

They locked eyes for a few seconds

Marina was taken aback for a moment

Daron’s eyes seemed to hold too many emotions all at once

Marina could sense a trace of melancholy, a shadow of sorrow, and a lingering tenderness she couldn’t quite understand

Mr. Zamora, we’re here, the driver called out from the front

Daron finally looked away from Marina, glanced out the window and said offhandedly in his low voice, Head to the Finley family’s place.”

Head to the Finley House,” Daron said

The driver didn’t say a word, just hit the gas and drove straight toward the Finley family’s place

Marina snapped back to reality, a flicker of surprise flashing in her eyes at his words

We’renot staying late?she blurted out, still a bit dazed

Daron’s voice was gravelly and a little sleepy. I’m drowsy.”

Marina replied softly, Oh.”

He really had been worn out these days

Seeing that Marina wasn’t exactly cheerful, Daron asked in a casual tone, You sound kind of bummed. Don’t tell me you actually enjoy pulling overtime?”

You sound kind of bummed. Don’t tell me you actually enjoy pulling overtime?Daron teased

Marina shook her head. No way.”

No one who worked for a living actually liked overtime, unless they were the boss

Daron shot her an intense look, then just shut his eyes again, saying nothing more

Marina didn’t say a thing either, keeping silent all the way to the Finleys

It was usually about a twentyminute drive from the Zamora Group to the Finley family’s place

But with no traffic at night, they could make it in just ten minutes

Marina was gazing out the window when, out of nowhere, she felt a weight settle on her shoulder

Her heart thudded hard in her chest. When she glanced down, she saw that Daron, out cold, had unconsciously rested his head on her shoulder

She froze, hardly daring to breathe, and her heartbeat was so loul, she swore he could hear it

For the last few minutes of the drive, Marina didn’t dare move a muscle, her palms slick with sweat

The way Daron trusted her so openly, like no one else existed, made her chest feel tight and a little sore

As the car neared the Finley family’s gate, Marina absently bit her lip, feeling like the ride had ended way too soon

Just as she was debating whether to wake him up, Daron instinctively leaned back, the weight finally lifting off her shoulder

Marina breathed a silent sigh of relief

The driver rolled to a stop outside the Finley family’s place

Set it. You stay in the car.”

Just as the driver reached for the door handle, Marina softly said. I’ll

It was rare for Daron to fall into such a deep sleep, especially in a car

The noise from opening and closing the doors twice could easily wake

The driver nodded, glanced up at the rearview mirror, and saw Daron leaning back in his seat, sound asleep

His eyes widened in surprise

He’d been driving Daron for years, and he could hardly remember

As far as he could recall, Daron was always sharp and alert, even after

Those cool, deep eyes of his never looked tired

straight through the night

Daron had never fallen asleep in the car before

Marina slipped out of the car as quietly as she could, closing the

But the moment Marina softly shut the car door, she caught sight of Daron suddenly opening his eyes in the back seat, startling her

His deep, intense gaze locked onto hers through the glass, the window between them only making the moment feel more charged

Marina pressed her lips together, gave a gentle wave goodbye

Daron’s brows furrowed as he watched her head inside, disappearing

Out of his line of sight

The driver noticed Daron was awake and glanced back carefully at him

Mr. Zamora, should we head straight back tothe driver asked

Daron said curtly, Back to Zamora Group.”

overtime tonight, he thought

Got it, Mr. Zamora. With a nod to Daron’s order, the driver started the car and headed back to the Zamora Group

The driver forced a wry smile. Looks like Ms. Finley’s the only one who gets to ski

As they drove, the driver stole a cautious glance in the rearview mirror. Daron was looking down at his phone, fingers moving quickly as he typed, the screen’s glow highlighting his chiseled features and giving him an even more striking

presence

Once he’d sent Marina a message, Daron slipped his phone back into his pocket

The driver quickly turned his attention back to driving, keeping his eyes on the road

The driver thought to himself, Was Mr. Zamora really asleep on Ms. Finley’s shoulder just now, or was he just faking it?”

After all, the Zamora Group wasn’t that far from the Finley family’s place. At night, with no traffic, it was just a little over ten minutes by car

Even if he had been asleep, he should have looked a little groggy when he woke up

But the driver didn’t see any sign of tiredness on Daron’s face

Instead, it was like Daron had just soaked up some kind of life force

Marina got home and headed straight upstairs

As she was about to head to her own room, Marina noticed Elnora’s room was open, so she wandered over to take a look

The room was empty. Marina paused for a few seconds, almost pulling out her phone to call Elnora, before remembering that Elnora had told her she was going to be living in Port City for a while

Elnora had married Albert, so she’d probably be spending a lot more time in Port City from now on

Marina stood there for a few seconds, staring at Elnora’s room, then let out a quiet sigh and went back to her own room

Back when she stubbornly chose to stay in Sicester, maybe her sister had also stood outside her door, zoning out just like

Marina was now

How did the Finley family, that used to be so lively, end up like this?Marina thought

Marina let out a soft sigh, her body heavy with exhaustion as she slumped down at her dressing table. She sat there for a while, just resting, before finally heading to the bathroom to wash up

When she came out of the bathroom, she saw her phone screen glowing on the dressing table. She walked over and picked it up. It turned out Daron had texted her

Daron: [Just come straight to the office at nine tomorrow. No need to pick me up at my place.

He probably wanted to catch up on some sleep and didn’t want anyone showing up and disturbing him

Marina texted back almost instantly: [Got it.

After she sent her reply, Daron never texted back

Just as Marina was about to exit the app, her phone buzzed with a few new messages from Waylon

He was full of apologies for barging in today, explaining that he’d only gone to pick her up at the airport because Kathy told him he should try to look good and show he cared

Now he said he finally got what kind of marriage she wanted, and he was totally on boardthey’d just put on a show for the family, no interfering in each other’s lives, and do their own thing once the ceremony’s over

Marina gave the messages a quick onceover and couldn’t help but come to a conclusion

Honestly, when it came to picking men, she and her mom were both a total disaster
