Even though Nathan’s words registered, Eliana still couldn’t relax. She looked at him, her eyes clouded with worry.
“Where is she now? Is she hurt? How did she look when you found her?” Eliana asked, her voice trembling.
Every time Eliana remembered what that person said, her heart twisted painfully.
Eliana wanted to ask for the truth, but fear gnawed at her, terrified that things would be just as that person said, something she couldn’t possibly bear.
“She’s okay, not hurt or anything. When she called me, she said she was at the hospital. That’s all I know. I just wanted to make sure you were alright, so I came straight here,” Nathan said, trying to reassure her.
When Eliana heard Irene was at the hospital, a look of panic flickered in her eyes. She asked, “She’s at the hospital? Why? Is she alright?”
Nathan had no idea what that person had told Eliana, so he was confused by her reaction.
Nathan held her tight and hurried outside. “Eliana, you need to take care of yourself right now. Irene’s fine, I promise, she really is.”
Nathan was genuinely worried and hurting for her, so his voice was tinged with emotion.
As soon as he finished, Eliana’s eyes brimmed with tears before they spilled down her cheeks.
Seeing her like this, Nathan was at a loss.
Realizing his tone had been off, Nathan quickly explained, “Eliana, please don’t be like this. I’m not blaming you, I’m just worried about you.”
“This was all aimed at me. Irene only got caught up in this because of me,” Eliana said, her voice breaking. “If anything happens to her, I’ll never be able to forgive myself.”
That was when it finally clicked for Nathan why she’d been so fixated on Irene’s condition.
But honestly, he’d only gotten one call from Irene, and Nathan had no real idea what was going on with her right now.
Thinking about this, Nathan rushed to the car, got Eliana inside, and pulled out his phone to dial Irene right away.
The call connected almost instantly, and Irene’s anxious voice rang out from the other end. “Nathan, did you find Eliana? I’m really worried. Did you find her yet?”
Before Nathan could even respond, Eliana jumped in, her voice shaky with worry. “Irene, where are you? Did that person hurt you at all? Are you okay?”
Irene let out a huge sigh of relief on the other end.
She said, “Eliana, thank God you’re okay! I’m fine, really. He didn’t hurt me at all, just dumped me by the side of the road. Some kind passerby brought me to the hospital, and I’m really okay now.
“What about you? Are you alright?”
Irene’s voice shook as she spoke.
Irene knew that the guy was targeting Eliana, so she was genuinely scared he might have done something to her.

Every time Irene imagined Eliana going through something so awful, she couldn’t help but feel sick with worry.
Hearing Irene’s voice, which didn’t sound devastated at all, Eliana slowly started to relax. It hit her that everything that person said was just meant to mess with her, to scare her on purpose.
Realizing this, Eliana finally breathed a sigh of relief.
As long as Irene was safe, nothing else mattered.
Hearing Irene’s worried question, Eliana quickly replied, “I’m fine, really. I’m okay, too.”
Just then, the sound of police sirens cut through the air.
Irene heard it too and let out another sigh of relief. “Glad you’re safe, really.”
Eliana finally felt like she could breathe again. She hung up and handed the phone back to Nathan.
Nathan adjusted her jacket, making sure she was comfortable, then said seriously, “Just wait here for me.”
Once she nodded, Nathan shut the car door and went over to talk to the cops who’d just shown up, quickly explaining what was going on.
As Nathan spoke, the officers immediately looked over at the car.
Eliana suddenly jerked, instinctively curling up in her seat.
She didn’t even know why she was freaking out so badly. Right now, every stranger’s stare sent chills down her spine, making her feel utterly terrified.
Eliana tried desperately to get a grip, to stop herself from shaking, but her body wouldn’t listen.
Earlier, she’d been so worried about Irene that she hadn’t even noticed how rattled she was.
But now, Eliana was totally losing it, her mind yanked straight back into that nightmare of fear.
So, when Nathan finished explaining things to the police and came back, he opened the car door and saw Eliana startle, shrinking back into the seat and trying to make herself as small as possible.
His heart ached for her. Nathan quickly reached out, wanting to comfort her.
But as soon as he moved, Eliana instinctively recoiled even more.
Nathan stopped right away, standing there and gently reassured her, ‘Eliana, it’s me. It’s okay now, really. Let’s go to the hospital, alright?
It took a moment for Eliana to snap out of it. She looked up at him, focusing intently. “Nathan‘
Nathan nodded again and again. “Yeah, it’s me. It’s okay now, Eliana”
Eliana nodded again and again, trying her best to steady herself
Once Nathan saw Eliana finally start to settle down, he didn’t dare stick around any longer. He fired up the engine and hit the road in a hurry.
As the car raced toward the hospital, Nathan was a mess inside, his heart was in knots, and no matter what, he just couldn’t calm down.

Nathan didn’t even dare think about what he’d just seen with Eliana. If he did, he was terrified he’d totally snap and do something crazy, something he’d never forgive himself for.
If Eliana hadn’t stopped him, he might’ve killed that guy right then and there, without even thinking.
But Nathan knew all too well that losing control like that would only bring a whole mess of trouble.
So right now, he had to force himself to stay cool.
Right now, Eliana needed him more than she ever had before. Nathan couldn’t afford to fall apart, not when she was counting on him.
Eliana was broken, body and soul. The first thing he had to do was make sure her physical wounds were treated, and then he’d stay by her side, helping her piece her heart back together, no matter how long it took.
Thinking that, Nathan clenched the steering wheel, forcing himself to stay steady.
The car tore through the streets straight to the hospital. Nathan kept Eliana close, shielding her from prying eyes so no one could see how vulnerable she was, then carried her quickly inside.
He’d already notified the hospital about Eliana’s situation, so the staff was waiting to examine her as soon as they arrived.
