As I stare down at the completed files for Sophia’s mating to Santiago, I can’t help but feel satisfied knowing that he will no longer be something that haunts her. I can feel her through our bond. The moment she marked me, I felt her presence all around me, and every insecurity about her leaving to return to him was washed away by the cold embrace of her affinity.
The fire in me is calm. A burning ember, as the calm, lucid river that is Sophia, dances around it. Not to extinguish, but to protect. I’ve never felt safe enough to let anyone in, and I know that I’ll never regret it. My favorite part of all this is how easily she shows me exactly what she’s feeling.
“Hey,” I look up to see her coming over to me as she straps her AR to the clips.
There isn’t a single hair out of place. Her uniform is pressed and clean. Her hair is pulled back in a tight braid, and her equipment is where it’s supposed to be. She looks perfect, and all I can think of is getting her out of this when we get home.
“Yes?”
“I’ve been thinking-”
“We’re not changing any of my plans. You got us in. I told you I was taking care of the rest,” I stop her. Her eyes slit as she glares at me. I press my lips together because it’s having the opposite effect she wants it to.
“I like the plan,” she rolls her eyes. “Are you going to let me speak or are you going to interrupt me again?”
“Speak,” I laugh and turn back to take my tablet so I can submit the final supply lists to the team leaders.
“Ivar will have to be promoted to General to establish Artume City as part of the council, right?”
“Yes,” I say, hating the idea.
Ivar didn’t want any of this. That woman rejected him without so much as asking herself what kind of person he is. I don’t understand how it wouldn’t be better for her to be mated to a Lycan Prince instead of some lazy ass Alpha who has very little to offer outside of money. Their system and beliefs are broken, and none of them seems to want to question them. If anything, she isn’t worthy of being a part of our family.
Sophia slides a piece of paper onto my tablet. There’s a picture of an inmate and what I’m guessing is his current residence. It’s a prison.
“You have to give me more, Darling. What is this?”
“That’s Kaylee’s older brother. Gavin had chosen him to be his backup beta because Oliver wanted to come with our grandmother to join the militia here. Alpha Romano had him arrested and tried for allegedly selling weapons on the black market. He was blamed for a school shooting that we’ve recently tied to Luna Romano.”
“He’s innocent,” he clears his throat and nods.
“And the firstborn alpha of Kay’s family. If and when Ivar marks Kaylee, the entire bloodline will belong to him under the Royal decree. Just like anyone with my blood is now yours. He would have to be General long enough for him to establish the city as yours, and our contract would still stand.”
I lower my tablet, staring at her because I’ve been trying to find a way to ensure his part of the contract doesn’t void. It’s been eating at me from the moment my mother told me he was struggling. I didn’t know this girl even had a brother.
Her situation makes a little more sense to me now. She’s making up for her brother’s mistakes. Taking a stand to protect
