The scent of cinnamon and apples is the first thing that hits me. I used to find comfort in its scent. I aned
home after my family was taken from me, and now the familiarity makes me naneous
Ragnar signals for the teams to spread out. When I go to take my position, he grabs my backpack Ideer back at ito s him shake his head with a smirk on his face. I look back at Kennedy, who smiles and takes my proteom
-This isn’t going to work if you stop me from doing my job- I remind him
-Stay with me. Take the lead. Show me where they are.-
-Can’t you use your heat sensors to find them?– I tap my eyes.

I make sure my gun is ready, and I take the lead as instructed. We head up the stairs towards the study frs. The wolf and the man might not be the same, but they only know what they’ve learned as a team. Unfortunately for them, I was there for most of it. The team follows behind us as we clear each room.
My body tenses up every time one of them shoots someone down, but I have to keep moving. I keep telling myself that we’ve come this far. The study doors are locked when we approach them.
-Step back, Soph.- Ragnar clears his throat. I move back. Ivar and I watch as he slams his hands on the double doon, and they completely fly off their hinges.
“Show off,” Ivar laughs.
The two walk in to find Poppy, Lieza, and Lieza’s mother hiding in here. The moment they see me aiming my gan at them they panic. I stop, aiming my gun at Poppy and see the moment when Lieza and her mother decide that this is no longer their concern. The two of them move away from Poppy, who looks over at them, hurt by their betrayal
“Fancy seeing you here,” I say, lowering my weapon.
Ivar and Kennedy both laugh. I turn my attention to Lieza. I don’t know when she started hating me, or if she ever cared for me outside of being grateful for saving her life when we were kids. But the hate in her eyes now tells me it went beyond the situation at hand.
“No one here will bow,” she says with conviction. “They will never follow your orders. We’re wolves”
“You’re property,” I inform her and reach into my vest for the Alpha King’s decree. “You all belong to House Lycan. You’re not going to be asked to follow orders. You’re going to follow them, or you’re going to die.”
“Submit,” Ragnar growls. The two of them look at the two of us.
“May I make an inquiry, My King?” I ask.
“Whatever you want,” he says, placing his hand on my head.
“I want this one as my personal handmaid. Eliza can train her?
“You fucking bitch,” Lieza growls.
“I don’t know, Darling. The last thing I need is for this stupid dog to poison you. Look at the anger in her eyes I hear the
smirk in his tone.

“I say we kill her,” Kennedy says. “You don’t want a dog like this one serving you, my Queen. You need someone who can b useful. If you can’t bring yourself to kill it, I’ll do it for you. It’s what she deserves after bothering Dr Polucci and disrespecting you.”
The anger in his eyes quickly disappears. She looks between Kennedy and me and then at Ragnar.
“You mated the Lycan King?” she asks softly. “Why would he want you?”
“Take a look around,” Ragnar growls at her. “None of this would be possible without her. Ivar, grab the girl. Kennedy, take care of these two. I don’t want insubordination among our new servants. Especially one that doesn’t respect my mate.
“My King,” Kennedy bows.
Ivar walks over to Poppy. She’s frozen in fear as he pulls her out of the corner she’s standing in. Ragnar reaches for my har and pulls me back toward the door.
“Sophie, wait,” Lieza cries out. “Please, I didn’t know.”
“You didn’t know what, exactly?” I ask, looking back at her.
“You’re not this person. I know you. You have been my best friend since we started at the academy. You’re kind and warm. Sophie, my mom is here. You saved me once,” she sobs.
“I did,” I agree. “You have no idea how much I regret saving you both that night. I could have been saving my brothers.”
I turn my back on her the same way they all looked the other way when Santiago tried to make me submit and force me in something that didn’t make sense. Ragnar closes the doors behind us, leaving Kennedy in there as Lieza cries out my name
I raise my gun and shake off the ugly feeling in my chest. I continue forward, listening to the way Poppy’s heart is thundering in her chest. She’s not giving Ivar a hard time as he follows behind us. But she screams when I spin around to face her.
“Where is he?” I demand. “I know know.”

“There’s a panic room on the terrace,” she whispers. Kennedy comes back with a smile on her face.
“Give me the girl. Make sure she’s not lying,” Ragnar grabs Poppy’s arm and waves the two of them forward.
“Are you going to kill me too?” Poppy asks when Ivar and Kennedy make their way up the stairs.
“No,” the two of us answer in unison.
“Then why kill Lieza. She was all the family I had left,” she cries out.
“Because, unlike you, Lieza was a real threat.”
“You don’t think I’m a threat? I took everything from you,” she shouts.
“With her help. You wouldn’t have gotten as close as you did without her. She wanted everything I worked for My job, the apartment, the properties, but she wasn’t smart enough to pull it off. So she did the next best thing. She made you buy it for her. Right?” I smile. Her lower lip trembles as she looks down at her feet.
“You didn’t deserve any of it,” she chokes out.
“Any of what?” I ask.

She rolls her eyes at me. I release my claws, letting my instincts take over. I grab her face and make her look at me. When her eyes meet mine again, they go wide. Tears slip down her cheeks as she takes in what’s standing in front of her.
“You’re like them,” she croaks.
“Yeah, it’s why I didn’t shift with the rest of you. Answer my question. Any of what?”
You were never one of us. What you are doesn’t matter. The bloodlines need to remain pure, You and your brothers were abominations. Everyone knows that. It’s why we all accepted not making you Luna. It’s all you ever cared about anyway.”
“I didn’t care about being the Luna, you dense bitch. Why the hell would I want to live the way you do? She’s wearing shorts that are a couple of sizes too small and a crop top. “I’ve always felt bad for you, Poppy. You never stole anything from me that I would miss.”

She stares at me for a bit. Tears slide down her face, and she looks away. That’s all the answer I need. Ivar whistles to let us know that he’s found the box. The three of us make our way up. On the rooftop terrace is a huge glass safety box.
Inside are the Romanos. Ragnar shoves Poppy forward. She stumbles and lands in front of the keypad. She looks back at us and shakes her head to inform us she doesn’t know the password. I step forward and press the button on what appears to be a speaker.
“Hey,” I greet them. Alpha Romano steps forward.
“You can kill her for all we care,” he says. “She’s served her purpose.”
