Chapter 434
No matter what happened before, Leo would always sweet–talk her, or at least try to comfort her. Even when he was annoyed, he’d never talk to her so coldly and directly.
She’d been by Leo’s side for over thirty years without any real title or place in his life.
She always thought their bond was stronger than anything anyone else had. She never imagined Leo would talk to her like that today.
Verena’s face went pale as she watched Leo walk right past her.
She took a deep breath. Her heart hurt so bad she could barely stand it.
“Even if you never wanted to marry me. I’ve stayed by your side all these years,” Verena said, her voice trembling.
“No matter what happens, Victor is your son,” she added, her eyes pleading.
“All these years, Daron has been challenging you just to make you swallow your pride. If you do, Victor won’t be in any trouble,” she said desperately.
“Leo, please, just go and beg Daron,” she pleaded, her voice breaking.
Verena still believed that, deep down, there was a father–son connection between Daron and Leo. She was sure that if Leo just swallowed his pride and asked, Daron would definitely give in.
Leo didn’t even slow down as Verena spoke. He just walked away, not even looking back.
Verena stared at Leo’s decisive retreat, her face frozen, unable to process what just happened. She finally lost control. burying her face in her hands as she cried her heart out.
After crying her heart out, Verena wasn’t ready to give up yet. She wanted a private talk with Daron.
Leo still had plenty of leverage left to play.
Verena believed that businessmen only cared about profit. If they offered enough, Daron wouldn’t make things difficult anymore.
But even after putting all her leverage on the table, Daron still refused to see her.
The next day, when Bette brought Durif, who had just arrived from Vrufield, to check on Daron at the hospital, they found Verena waiting outside.
She was being blocked by Daron’s bodyguards, who wouldn’t let her in.
When Verena saw Durif, her eyes lit up with hope. She rushed toward him, almost desperate.
“Grandpa Durif,” Verena called out, her voice trembling with emotion.
She fell to her knees right in front of him, desperation written all over her face.
“Please, I’m begging you. Please talk to Daron, ask him to show mercy to Victor,” she pleaded, her voice breaking.
“If Daron is willing to spare Victor, I promise we’ll stay out of his life forever,” she vowed, her eyes full of desperation.
Daron never says no to Durif. If Durif puts in a good word, Daron will cave for sure.

“Leo’s got tons of businesses and property under his name. We’re ready to walk away from the Zamora family for good,” Verena said, her voice trembling with desperation.
Durif listened to Verena, his face showing no emotion. His voice was low and serious as he asked, “Is leaving the Zamora family your idea, or Leo’s?”
When Verena saw Durif actually respond, hope sparked in her eyes, growing even stronger.
“Leo and I made this decision together,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion.
Frency’s laws are extremely strict when it comes to prosecuting financial criminals.
Victor had embezzled a massive sum from the branch company, and he was facing at least a few decades behind bars.
Victor would never get to enjoy the privileges and resources of the Zamora family or the assets Leo left for him anyway. It made more sense to trade all those assets and benefits for his freedom.
Durif shot Verena a calm, dispassionate glance.
Verena stayed kneeling, her eyes pleading earnestly.
“Grandpa Durif, please, you can trust me. If Daron lets Victor go, we’ll give up everything we own,” she promised, her voice trembling with desperation.
Durif shook his head.
“I can’t intervene with Daron. You’ll have to figure something else out,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Verena was completely stunned by Durif’s response, her face froze in disbelief.
“Grandpa Durif…” Verena started, her voice trembling.
But before she could finish, Bette cut her off. “Are you deaf or something? My grandpa already made it clear he’s not going to be your go–between. Why are you still here, making a scene?”
“And honestly, are we even friends? Why would we ever help you out?” she added, her tone dripping with contempt.
Verena’s expression froze, and tears welled up in her eyes, slipping silently down her face.
Durif looked at her.
“Verena, you should’ve seen this coming, you know. Over thirty years ago, when you were pregnant with Victor and knelt before Wilhelmina, begging her for a way out, your fate was already sealed,” he said, his tone flat.
Verena lowered her head, unable to meet his gaze.
Durif’s calm, emotionless tone ripped away Verena’s last shred of dignity, leaving her so ashamed she couldn’t even look up at him.
Back then, when Verena was pregnant with Victor and had knelt before Wilhelmina, Wilhelmina was still completely in the dark about Verena’s relationship with Leo.
At that time, Wilhelmina and Leo’s relationship was still pretty solid.
Wilhelmina had just had a son and a daughter with Leo. As soon as she was out of confinement, she headed straight to Leo’s
office.

After all, Leo never liked Hayley one bit.
But these past few years, Hayley has really cemented her place in the Zamora family.
With Daron backing her up, Hayley could walk around the Zamora family with her head held high. Meanwhile, Verena had stuck by Leo for decades, never got a proper title, and now her own son was about to end up behind bars.
Back when Wilhelmina was sick and barely hanging on, Verena kept taunting her with message after message, just to provoke her and twist the knife,
Looking back now, this must be karma coming back to bite her.
Durif didn’t even look back at Verena. Bette took his arm and led him inside the hospital.
Verena slumped to the ground, watching as Durif and Bette’s figures disappeared through the hospital doors.
Inside the hospital room, Marina was helping Daron button up his shirt.
When Bette and Durif walked in, they saw Marina on her tiptoes, reaching up to fasten the very top button of Daron’s shirt.
Daron had one arm around Marina’s waist, standing tall and straight, purposely making himself even taller so she had to lean in close just to keep her balance,
Bette clicked her tongue softly when she saw the scene.
Daron turned and saw Durif coming in.
He instantly sobered up, put on a serious look, and greeted Durif with a smile.
“Grandpa, what brings you here?” Daron asked.
Durif replied in a calm, measured voice, “You hadn’t come home, so I thought I’d drop by and see how you’re doing.”
