Chapter 357
FAYE
There was silence in the car.
The sound of the engine, the faint blur of passing trees and buildings outside the window, the occasional shift of Alexander’s hand on the steering wheel–it all blended into something
calm.
And yet, I couldn’t ignore the way he kept looking at me.
A glance here.
Another there.
Quick, controlled, like he didn’t want to linger too long–but he still did.
At first, I pretended not to see it, because I wasn’t in the mood for a conversation.
I kept my gaze forward, my fingers loosely resting against my bag on my lap, trying to ignore
him.
But then it happened again.
And this time, when I turned slightly, I caught him before he could look away.
My brows pulled together just a little.
“…What?” I asked softly.
My voice came out quiet.
There was a brief pause.
Then, “Nothing.”
I narrowed my eyes faintly.
That wasn’t an answer
I shifted slightly in my seat, turning just enough to face him more directly. “You keep looking
at me.”
His grip on the steering wheel adjusted, his shoulders shifting almost imperceptibly before he gave a small shrug.

“It’s just…” he started, then trailed off for a second, like he was deciding how to phrase it
My attention sharpened.
“The way you look today,” he continued, glancing at me again–this time not immediately looking away, “it reminds me of someone.”
I blinked.
“…Someone?” I reminded him of someone? Really?
He nodded slightly, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
“A girl I brought to Blood Crescent some time ago,” he added. “From Silver Hollow.”
For a second, I just stared at him.
It took a moment to register that he was talking about me.
So that was it. Right.
“Oh,” I murmured softly.
Something in my chest shifted. I wasn’t sure if he meant it in a good way or a bad way.
He huffed out a quiet breath, the smile on his face growing just a fraction. “She had this look, “he went on, his tone lighter now, like he was slipping into the memory. “Carefree. A little wild
I let out a small, disbelieving laugh under my breath.
“A little troubled,” he finished, more quietly this time.
That part lingered.
And for some reason, it didn’t feel like an insult.
It felt accurate.
I shook my head slightly, a smile pulling at my lips despite myself. “That doesn’t sound like a compliment.”
“It wasn’t meant to be one,” he said easily. “I didn’t realize how much I’ve missed her until today. She was kind of addictive.”
That made me laugh.

His gaze flicked toward me again, the amusement was clear now. “You used to look me in the eye like you were daring me to say something.” he continued, “just so you could challenge me.”
I turned my head fully this time, staring at him. “Well, you were always trying to say something.”
He raised a brow. “You gave me reasons… I can’t tell exactly how, but I know you did.”
A soft breath slipped past my lips as I leaned back slightly into my seat. “I was intimidated, you know.”
That seemed to catch his attention.
“Intimidated?” he repeated. “You?”
I nodded, glancing at him briefly before looking ahead again. “Yeah. You were…” I hesitated, searching for the right word, then huffed lightly. “A lot.”
That earned a quiet chuckle from him.
“Those eyes of yours didn’t help,” I added, more casually now. “The way you’d just look at me like you already knew what I was going to say before I said it.”
“I usually did,” he said with a smirk.
I rolled my eyes, but there was no heat behind it.
“I mean it,” I insisted, my lips twitching.
A small pause.
Then I added, “But…”
1 hesitated for a second, then let it out anyway.
“I kind of enjoyed getting on your nerves.
He laughed.
Not the restrained, quiet version I was used to
Something more genuine.
And for a second, I just… listened to it

Watched the way it softened his features.
“That explains a lot,” he said after a moment, still amused.
“It does,” I shot back.
We both smiled.
It took a moment before he spoke again.
“So,” he said, his tone shifting, “what are you actually going to do at the library?”
I glanced at him.
Then back ahead.
“Not much. I’ve been doing some research,” I said slowly. “With Anna.”
That got his full attention.
“Research,” he repeated.
I nodded. “Ancient rites. Old texts. Things that aren’t exactly… common knowledge.”
He nodded. “Anything specific?” he asked.
I exhaled lightly. “Something that might help us with Roman.”
“And I thought you weren’t bothered anymore,” Alexander said sarcastically.
I smirked. “I was just a little distracted earlier, okay? Get over it.”
“Whatever you say,” he said.
I sighed.
“I don’t think it’s just trauma,” I added quietly. “His memory loss, I mean.”
That felt important to say.
Because it was something I hadn’t fully admitted out loud to him before.
I turned my head slightly, glancing at him. “Do you?”
His jaw tightened faintly as he considered it.
“I haven’t thought about it,” he admitted.
I nodded slightly, looking forward again. “Anna thinks there’s more to it.”

“She found something the last time I was at the library,” I continued. “We didn’t get to go through everything, but… it felt like she was onto something.”
Something real.
Something that might actually explain what was happening.
Or at least point us in the right direction.
“I figured it was better to spend my time on that than just walk around the packhouse doing nothing,” I said.
I exhaled softly, my gaze drifting briefly to the passing road ahead-
And then everything snapped.
My breath caught in my throat.
“Alexander-”
My body tensed instantly, my hand gripping the edge of my seat as my eyes locked onto the figure just ahead of the car-
Too close… way too close.
“Watch it!”
