I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, my legs pounding into the earth, my heartbeat loud and hammering in my ears, Amelia’s voice in my head yelling at me to run faster.
“Faster, Sade! Don’t let them catch you! Faster!”
As I ran, tears streamed down my face, and I couldn’t stop it. I kept wiping my eyes to keep my vision from getting blurry, but more tears kept coming.
Amelia… God, Amelia.
I felt like a betrayer for leaving her behind, like a bad person, but she had screamed at me to run, to take flight and spread my wings. She had screamed at me not to let everything be in vain.
We have been planning our escape for years now, when we realized that we didn’t have to be slaves to those monsters. When we realized that we could step out of our cage if only we snatched the keys and freed
ourselves.
We told the other girls, but they were too scared to join us. And now I see why they were so scared.
Because Amelia… Amelia…
I didn’t stop running, but I paid attention to my environment and the earth around me, listening. Nobody was behind me, and they weren’t near me either.
Still running, I let the shift course through my body, letting my wolf out. With the adrenaline coursing through my veins, I didn’t feel the pain of the shift, and soon I was running on all fours, my senses more sharp. I heard the sound of cars which led me to know I was close to the main road.
I increased my speed, reaching for any light, dodging tears while little branches reached for me and made tiny cuts in my skin, and they didn’t heal like they were supposed to.
I had to live… for Amelia. Because Amelia, oh, sweet Amelia, she wanted to live. She had dreams and she still saw the beauty of the world despite everything we’ve been through, while I had lost all hope and life was just black and white to me.
But now that she was no more, I was going to live for her. Her sacrifice couldn’t be in vain.
The sound of cars grew closer and I pushed my body to the limit, running faster than I should.
Almost there… I was almost there, Amelia. I’m sure there would be one kind human out there who would help me. I know all humans weren’t the same as they were back in that place.
I’m sure they were kind humans.
I burst out of the forest and onto the road.

It all happened in a blink.

A car was passing just as I burst out, none of us noticing the other till it was too late.

Since both the car and I were going at a really fast speed, we couldn’t stop in time, and we both collided.
Pain tore through me as the car slammed into me, and I went flying back. I landed hard, my head hitting the ground first, and I heard a crack.
My wolf fell back since we were both in so much pain to maintain that form, and once in my human form, I coughed up blood, everything so loud. I couldn’t lift a single finger. I couldn’t even open my eyes.
So this was it.
I’m sorry, Amelia. I tried. I really tried.
I heard someone cursing, and then they were yelling. I felt hands on me as I was raised from the ground. I whined, my weak body trembling.
Please, I begged them in my mind. Please just let me die. Death would be better than this pain and misery that I was in.
I just wanted it all to be over. There was no saving me. I’ve been dead for a long time now, but my heart remains beating.
But right now, the beat was slow and heavy.
“Please,” I whispered as darkness swallowed me whole.

“Amelia!” I screamed as I ran towards her, but she shook her head, mouthing, “Run.”
Run? How could I run and leave her? We were going to get out of here together. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I was getting out of this hell with her.
She was bleeding from her head, and I know that would slow her down if we wanted to run, but that didn’t matter. I was going to carry her.
Because God knows I wasn’t leaving her here.
I continued running towards her even though she was shaking her head, but just as I got to her, two men appeared behind her, and I halted in my steps, my eyes wide.
“It’s too late,” she whispered.
“The other one’s here!” one of the men shouted, pointing at me and I heard footsteps racing down the stairs. “Go,” Amelia mouthed and I shook my head, tears rolling down my face.
Two other men appeared and I took a step back as they approached me slowly like they were approaching a

spooked animal.
“Now come on,” one of them said, his accent thick. “This doesn’t have to get messy.”
Behind him, I saw Amelia getting onto her feet.

“Go, Sade,” she said, not whispering this time and the men turned to her. “Spread your wings and fly. Fate has decided this is where my journey ends. I love you, Sade girl.”
“No,” I choked out and my voice turned into a scream as Amelia lunged at one of the men, a dagger appearing in her hand, and she stabbed him in the chest.
The man roared in pain.
I turned and ran, not waiting to see what happened next. Amelia wasn’t getting out of that now. She has sacrificed herself for me, so it was only right that I ran and tried to live.
I ran into the woods without looking back, panting, but my steps halted when I heard Amelia’s scream.
I turned, my eyes wide and tears streaming down as I watched Amelia go down, a knife in her abdomen.
The other girls were outside, shaking, some crying, but none of them moved to help. They were all scared of these men. They were all scared to die.
I was never afraid of death, but right now, I was, because I had to live for Amelia.
I continued running, and the men began chasing.

I jolted awake, covered in sweat, my heart racing.
“You’re awake.”
Fear squeezed my body as I heard that male voice. I was alive? Why? And have I been recaptured? Death would be better than that.
I sat up immediately, looking for anything that could aid me as a weapon, but it looked like I was in a hospital.
A hospital…?
These people have never taken me to a hospital before.
“Easy, little wolf.”
I finally turned to face the man, and all I could do was stare.
Who was he? Why was I in a hospital?
“Hello,” he said, extending his hand to me like he was greeting a business partner, his blue eyes soft even though his features looked cold. “I’m Kross Varkas.”
