Once Yara got back to her car, she finally took out the business card and dialed the number on it. Joyce had introduced her to a professional online promoter. He’d helped plenty of stories go viral online.
After Yara gave a quick rundown of Marina’s situation, the promoter’s interest was piqued, and he agreed to meet up. Yara was absolutely thrilled and set up a meeting spot right away.
After grabbing lunch with Daron, Marina went back to work at the Finley Group. Daron’s schedule had been packed lately, so Marina told him not to bother driving her back. She went home alone.
Her phone suddenly rang as she was driving back. Marina checked the caller ID. It was her attorney, Antoine Arnaud. Marina frowned in confusion, but answered the call anyway. “Hello, Mr. Arnaud, is there something up?” she asked.
Antoine was the lawyer she hired to handle the case against Lavern. She’d signed full power of attorney, and ever since then, Antoine hadn’t reached out to her at all. So when he suddenly called out of the blue, Marina was a bit thrown off.
“Hello, Ms. Finley,” Antoine said, “Lavern wants to see you. He’s been refusing to eat at the detention center for days now. They said he won’t touch a bite unless you show up.”
He added, “The staff at the detention center passed the message on, so I figured I’d better call and ask what you want to do.”
Marina frowned. Just the thought of Lavern made her nauseous. “I won’t see him,” Marina said coldly, “Whatever he does to himself, it’s got nothing to do with me. Don’t bother calling me about this again.”
Hearing Marina, Antoine hurried to say, “Understood, Ms. Finley. The case will be heard in a week. Do you plan to come to court?”
Marina didn’t hesitate at all. She said in a low, steady voice, “I’m not coming. Just do what I asked and handle it for me.”
“Got it,” Antoine replied.
Marina just said, “Mm,” and when she noticed Antoine had nothing else to add, she ended the call.
She had just put her phone down when the car in front of her slammed on the brakes. Marina didn’t have time to react and ended up rear–ending them.
Once her car came to a stop, Marina rubbed her temples, opened the door, and got out to check the damage. Luckily, she hadn’t been going too fast, so the other car wasn’t badly damaged. It was just a small problem, easy enough to handle. Marina took out her phone and snapped a few photos.
The driver of the other car got out as well, phone still in hand, looking like he was about to make a call. But when he saw Marina, he lowered his phone.
Marina knew the rear–end was her fault, so she didn’t even try to argue. She looked up at him, her face apologetic and polite. “Sorry about that,” she said.
But as soon as she spoke, the guy looked genuinely surprised and excited to see her. “Marina? Wow, I never expected to see you here!” he said.
Marina glanced up, thinking he looked familiar, like one of Lavern’s buddies from high school. She tried to remember his name, but it just wouldn’t come to her.
“Hello,” she said. Her voice was polite, with a hint of reserve.

Seeing the confusion in Marina’s eyes, Henry realized she probably didn’t remember him. He smiled and said, “I’m Henry Gill, remember? I was in the class next to yours back in high school.”
Marina nodded, finally remembering who he was. “Oh, hi, Marina said politely, her tone reserved.
Henry grinned, his tone light and cheerful. “Marina, it’s been ages!”
Marina just nodded, not interested in chit–chat, and shifted the conversation to business. “I rear–ended your car, and the back’s a bit damaged. I’ve already snapped some pictures for the record. If you’re not in a rush, we can head to the express claims center together and get it sorted,” she said.
Henry quickly said, “Sorry, Marina, I’ve got to rush off and sign an important contract right now, so I don’t have time to go to the claims center with you.
“But let’s swap numbers, and when I’m free, I’ll hit you up so we can go sort it out together. Sound good? Besides, we’ve got 48 hours to take care of it.”
Marina nodded. “Alright.”
Henry handed her his phone with a friendly grin. “Here, save your number.”
Marina nodded, took the phone, and put her assistant’s number. She didn’t want to get mixed up with anyone connected to Lavern. Besides, Henry and Lavern had been close friends back in high school. With everything that happened, there was no way Henry hadn’t heard about Lavern getting sent to jail.
Henry saw the number and grinned, saving it right away. Just then, his assistant called, urging him to hurry up.
Henry answered, then reluctantly said goodbye to Marina and headed off. “Marina, I’ll get going now. I’ll hit you up later!” he said.
Marina nodded. Then, Henry turned to get in his car, glancing back at Marina.
Marina didn’t even spare him a second glance. She just got back in her car. But Henry’s car kept driving ahead of her, and it turned out they were both heading the same way.
When both cars pulled up to the Finley Group one after the other, Marina raised an eyebrow. She hadn’t expected the contract Henry was signing to be with the Finley Group.
Henry noticed Marina’s car trailing behind him the whole way. But since he heard some issues with the contract, he spent the drive on the phone with his assistant.
When they finally arrived at the Finley Group, Henry parked right at the entrance. His assistant rushed over, and only then did he hang up. He glanced back at Marina’s car, but she just drove right past him and headed straight into the underground parking lot. A flicker of confusion crossed Henry’s face, but with his assistant urging him on, he hurried inside the Finley Group.
After parking her car in the underground garage, Marina waited for the elevator. When the elevator arrived, she stepped inside. The elevator only went up one floor before opening on the first level.
Marina looked up and saw Henry and his assistant standing by the elevator, each holding a contract and some paperwork. Henry perked up the moment he spotted Marina, flashing her a big, friendly grin. “Marina, what are the odds? We run into each other again!”
Marina glanced at the stack of documents in Henry’s assistant’s hands. Henry quickly grabbed the paperwork from his assistant, stepped into the elevator, beaming as he struck up a conversation with Marina. “I can’t believe it. You work at the Finley Group, and I’m here to talk business!” Henry said, sounding genuinely excited.
