Chapter 172 An Awkward Visit

Thinking of this, she felt a sense of sorrow. If she had chosen to pursue Jackson back then, would the outcome have been different?
But on second thought, she didn’t have a chance before, and she definitely didn’t have one now, right? After all, he had a girlfriend again.
She had never told anyone about this little secret of hers, not even Tracy. She kept it hidden in the depths of her heart.
When she saw Jackson return, Natalie felt her long–silent heart actually stir.
Jackson was carrying several shopping bags and quickly spotted the two people on the sofa.
He said to Tracy, “Tracy, you’re here. I went to the supermarket and bought your favorite fruits. I’ll wash and cut them for you in a bit.”
He was genuinely fond of Tracy as a little sister. Every time she came over, he would buy her favorite things.
So many years had passed, and he had maintained this habit without change, nor did he want to change. He doted on his own sister.
Just then, Morgan came out of the kitchen and asked, puzzled, “You brat, didn’t you go out on a date with a girl? How are you back so soon?”
Jackson rubbed his chin and said while changing his shoes, “Dad. I wasn’t out on a date. It was just a colleague who wanted to talk to me about work stuff. You’re overthinking it. I don’t want to date right now, and besides, she wasn’t interested either. You don’t need to worry.”
His last relationship had been too big of a blow to him. His ex–girlfriend had left him because she despised his poor family background.
Therefore, he wouldn’t date or get married again until he was successful in his career. After all, he was also afraid that girls would be scared off by his family’s situation.
Morgan slapped Jackson’s shoulder, looking disappointed. “You brat. You’re twenty–seven or twenty–eight and still don’t want to date? Are you trying to worry your mother and me to death? Look at other people’s sons. They’re the same age as you and are already preparing for a second child, and you’re still single. You should be ashamed, shouldn’t you?”
He got a headache just thinking about his son’s situation. All because he had a girlfriend a few years ago who dumped him because she disliked how poor the family was.
This stubborn brat refused to date even now, saying he would only consider it after he was established in his career. It was infuriating.
That girl looked down on their family, but surely not all girls were like that!
But this stubborn kid was impervious to reason and refused to date. The two old folks were worried sick.

Jackson rubbed his sore arm and couldn’t help but frown. “Dad, we have guests. Can you please stop talking about all that nonsense?”
Morgan shot Jackson a look but didn’t bring up the topic of dating again.
He smiled awkwardly at Natalie. “Sorry about that. It’s your first time here, and we’ve embarrassed ourselves.”
Natalie quickly shook her head. “It’s fine, not at all. I actually think your family is very warm. It feels very comfortable being here.”
If only she had been bold enough to pursue Jackson back then. She really liked this kind of family atmosphere.
Now, she no longer had the courage to pursue love. She could only work hard to earn money and keep herself busy.
Only then did Jackson notice Natalie. He found her a bit familiar and asked Tracy, “Tracy, is she a classmate of yours? Have I seen her somewhere before?”
Tracy smiled and said, “Yes, Jackson. I’m surprised you still remember her. She was just asking me if you were home.”
Before her voice had even fallen, she was given a light pinch by Natalic, and then she heard Natalie whisper, “Don’t talk nonsense. It’ll be bad if your cousin misunderstands. You’re making this very awkward for me.”
She was so awkward she could have dug a three–bedroom apartment out of the floor. She cautiously glanced at Jackson, and Jackson happened to be looking right at her.
Startled, she quickly lowered her head, her face instantly flushing red to the tips of her ears. She was so awkward she didn’t know where to put her hands and feet.
Tracy also whispered a reminder to Natalie, “I was just helping you test my cousin’s reaction. He still remembers you, isn’t that nice?”
After that little test, she realized her cousin had no other intentions toward Natalie; he merely remembered her.
“Stop talking,” Natalie pretended to be angry.
After Lily returned from buying groceries, the women gathered around to chat, while Morgan and his son got busy in the kitchen.
During the meal, Lily kept putting food on Tracy’s plate. Her sharp eyes noticed the bruises from an IV needle on the back of Tracy’s hand.
She couldn’t help but ask with concern, “Tracy, were you sick? Why are there needle marks on the back of your hand?”
Tracy pulled back the hand that had the marks. “It was just a small cold, but it’s all better now. Sorry to make you worry.”

She hadn’t planned on letting Morgan and the others know about her illness. She couldn’t let them worry
about her.
So, she told a white lie.
Lily frowned, somewhat displeased. “Why are you still being so formal with us?”
