Chapter 505

When Edmund showed up, dinner was already prepared in the kitchen.

Harris set down his chess piece and called everyone to the dining room.

Not seeing Daron in the front hall, he turned to the butler beside him.

“Where’s Daron? Why isn’t that brat here?” Harris asked.

The butler smiled and said softly, “He is in the kitchen, keeping his wife company.”

Harris raised an eyebrow, a smile appearing in his eyes.

That brat used to hate the smell of cooking oil, but now he’s actually spending time in the kitchen just to be with his wife. That’s a real surprise,” Harris said.

The butler laughed along with Harris and agreed, “Daron and his wife are really sweet together.

“I bet it won’t be long before the Zamora family has a little one on the way.”

Harris nodded with a smile. “Let’s hope that kid doesn’t disappoint me.”

Zara walked beside Martin, listening to the conversation, feeling uneasy inside.

Martin glanced down at her, noticing the change in her expression, and tightened his arm around her.

Zara took a moment to compose herself, then let a barely-there smile tug at her lips.

Marina waited patiently in the front hall, only heading into the dining room after the kitchen staff had finished bringing out and arranging all the dishes.

Daron was right there with her the entire time, never leaving her side.

Marina tried several times to nudge him toward his seat, but Daron just smiled and insisted on staying with her, refusing to go ahead without her.

When Daron and Marina walked into the dining room, Edmund teased, “Now that these two are in charge of hosting the family dinners, I can’t help but feel that time really catches up with you.

“They used to be just little kids, and now they’re all grown up, waiting on us old bones.

“Sometimes, you just have to admit you’re getting old.”

Harris nodded in agreement, then motioned for Marina and Daron to take their seats.

Matthew was the first to pick up his fork, helped himself to a dish, and after tasting it carefully, he said in a calm voice, “The dishes today taste a bit different from before.”

“But since it’s their first time taking care of dinner, it’s understandable if some details aren’t quite perfect.”

Matthew was obviously just nitpicking, purposely trying to make things uncomfortable for Marina.

But today, he was much more polite, and his tone wasn’t nearly as sharp, which left Marina with no good reason to retort.

Marina just smiled and sat down, treating Matthew’s words like hot air.

Daron said, “Uncle Matthew, now that your status isn’t what it used to be, it’s no wonder these dishes don’t quite measure up to your standards anymore.”

Then Daron turned to Marina and spoke softly.

Daron said, “Marina, looks like Uncle Matthew’s appetite has grown. Next time, let’s up the dinner budget a bit.”

Marina nodded, “You got it, honey.”

Matthew’s expression soured at their words.

Edmund chuckled and said, “Honestly, I think tonight’s food is pretty good. After all those rich and fancy meals, sometimes it’s the simple stuff that goes down easier.”

‘Honestly, I think tonight’s food is pretty good. After all those rich and fancy meals, sometimes it’s the simple stuff that goes down easier,” Edmund said with a smile.

‘Matthew, we’re getting up there in years. Our stomachs can’t handle things like the young folks anymore, so lighter dishes are the way to go,” Edmund added.

Matthew slammed his fork down, shooting Edmund a dark look.

Edmund, what’s that supposed to mean?” Matthew asked coldly.

Edmund put on a look of surprise.

‘Matthew, what’s gotten into you?” Edmund asked. “Why are you getting so worked up all of a sudden?”

Harris’s face darkened as he shot Matthew a displeased look.

‘Matthew, this is a family dinner. If you’ve got an issue, take it up after we’re done here,” Harris said in a low, commanding voice. “Don’t spoil the evening for everyone.”

Seeing the situation, Matthew jumped in, “Harris. Honestly, the one stirring things up and making everyone uncomfortable

is Edmund.

“He’s just upset because the company fired some of his wife’s relatives,” Matthew added.

Edmund’s face shifted, and he spoke up immediately. “Harris, you’ve got to weigh in on this.”

“One of my wife’s relatives got hurt on a company job years ago, ended up paralyzed and stuck in bed,” Edmund said.

“The company kept him on the payroll all these years, never missed a check. But the minute Martin took charge, he fired the guy, and even booted his kids, leaving the whole family with nothing to live on,” Edmund went on.

“It’s not like they had any big positions, just making a few hundred a month, and Martin just tossed them out without a second thought, Edmund said, frustration clear in his voice.

A crease formed between Harris’s brows as he frowned, clearly displeased.

Matthew, hot-tempered as ever, slammed his hand down on the table,

Martin quickly reached out to stop him, speaking up, “Grandpa Harris, let me explain.”

‘Grandpa Harris, I can explain,” Martin added hurriedly.

When we had the shareholders’ meeting, I suggested we trim the fat and cut out unnecessary costs, and everyone backed the idea,” Martin explained.

You and Daron supported it too, and Edmund, didn’t you vote for it yourself at the time?” Martin added.

Edmund’s face darkened.

Don’t twist my words. When we talked about cutting unnecessary costs, we were clearly referring to wasteful spending, not ossing out people for no good reason,” Edmund shot back.

Martin smiled and said, “But that relative from Edmund’s wife’s side hasn’t been with Zamora Group for years, and the ompany already gave him compensation back then. Keeping him on the payroll now is just an unnecessary expense.”

dmund was so pissed off by Martin’s words that you could see his chest rising and falling with rage.

larris frowned and said in a low, serious voice, “Edmund, don’t get worked up.”

Martin, you didn’t handle this well. You’ve just stepped into Zamora Group, and this is the time to establish your authority.

you’re too tough on the staff, you might stir up discontent among the people below,” Harris said.

I know all about this. I’m the one who signed off on him getting paid all these years,” Harris said.

It’s not like Zamora Group can’t handle that expense,” Harris added.

Martin lowered his head and kept quiet.

Matthew jumped in right away.

Harris, you don’t know the whole story. Martin just joined the company, and he’s short on people he can really trust. Of ourse he’s got to bring in his own team, and…. Matthew said.

larris raised his hand to cut him off.

When Leo stepped down and Daron took over, he didn’t have many people he could rely on either,” Harris said. “But did he ver just fire people and leave them with nothing?”

Matthew immediately spoke up.

Harris, did you forget? When Daron took over, he also carried out a round of layoffs,” Matthew said.

Harris nodded, acknowledging the point.

But Daron never let go of a disabled worker who got hurt working for the company,” Harris said, his tone firm.

‘If this keeps up and the boss loses everyone’s support, I’ll call for an internal vote and pick someone who’s truly up to the job,” Harris warned.

Matthew was left completely speechless.

Martin seized the moment to respond, “Grandpa Harris, I’ll restore their jobs tomorrow, and that relative will keep getting his salary as usual.”

“Grandpa Harris, I’ll restore their jobs tomorrow, and that relative will keep getting his salary as usual,” Martin said quickly.
