King Baldr has not stopped smiling since we got back. He knows that Ragnar has the Kings in his pocket, so as long as I keep my hold on them. It seems like it’ll be a while because I don’t know how to take it back other than forcing it out the way I do when I intentionally hurt people.
As I do my homework and keep an eye on the King while they eat. There’s a desperation in the way they’re eating, and it breaks my heart. I’ve never been held captive. Not the way they were. I even push my plate over to the Alpha King when he finishes his plate. He smirks in my direction, but neither of them looks at me directly because Ragnar is pissed about the way the Rogue King was speaking to me.
“You just walked right in?” Ivar asks with a smile.
“Yeah, Aurora thinks they were compelled to mind their own business. It worked in our favor,” I explain. I turn my laptop enough to show him that they’re really here. I spun the water in their bodies to make sure it’s really them already.
“Were you able to tag both the targets?”
“We still need the Alpha King target. He’s in Nigeria,” I clear my throat. “Did you find anything?”
“A few things. Several fake accounts and fan pages. I removed your medical records and your therapy ones.”
“Those were on there as well?”
“If it’s digital and someone is desperate enough, it can be hacked. It kind of looks like someone was looking for something.”
“Like what?” Ragnar asks.
“Have you ever donated blood?” he asks.
“No, I have OB silver type. It’s illegal for someone to try to take my blood. It wasn’t easy to get donations during my accident,” I inform him.
“Yeah, I remember that. I think these things were looking for a blood sample. Since you’re alive, it would have worked if it had been preserved properly. Be careful. I have to go. If you’re still watching the city news, I’ll be on tonight.”
“I do still watch. You’re doing great, all things considered. How is Kaylee doing?” I ask.
“I let her go home,” he says quietly. “She doesn’t want to be here any more than I want her to be here. All she does is try to make me doubt my decisions. Kennedy has been a big help.”
“Send her back over here,” I say immediately.
“Kaylee?”
“Kennedy.”

“You told me you wanted this to work. It’s not going to work with your ex-girlfriend standing behind you.”
“She has no right to be upset about that.”
“That’s like saying you had no right to kill her chosen.” I disagree.
“I know you guys are friends, but it would help me a lot if you were on my side on this,” he says, shaking his
head.
“Ivar, I have been on your side. Always will be. I’m doing this to help you. Trust me a little. This will work. With Kenny back over here, she’ll start taking her role more seriously. Besides, I need my specialist back. Things are getting heavy over here, and I can use a hard ass. Your brother is letting me get away with whatever I want,” we both laugh.
“That doesn’t sound like my brother.”
“I know, which is why I need backup. I think he’s up to something,” I agree.
“I’m sitting right here,” Ragnar glares at me.
“Fine. I’ll trust you on this, but if she starts acting out again, I’m making you come down here,” he sighs reluctantly. Ragnar taps the table and shakes his head.
“Ragnar would like me to remind you that I am the Queen now and you don’t tell me what to do,” I shrug. The Kings laugh.
“I’m older than you,”
“Yeah, but by law, I outrank you now.” It feels like acid to say that out loud. I grimace at the ugly feeling that
makes me shiver.
“That was gross,” he laughs.
“I know,” I groan, placing my hand over my eyes. “Your brother is a really bad influence on me.”
“I know he is,” he clears his throat. “Keep me updated, Sophie. Let me know if you need us.”
“Of course. Stay safe. Watch your six. You know how wolves are,” I sigh.
He smirks and hangs up the video call. I put the finishing touches on my paper so I can ask if I may be dismissed. I am tired and want nothing more than to shower and go to bed.
“You and Ivar are very close,” the Rogue King says.
“I’m sorry, what is your name?” I ask him. His thick bushy eyebrows furrow when others laugh.
“Xavier,” he answers.
“Xavier, why don’t you mind your own business?” I smile and look back down at my essay.

“I didn’t know you and your brother were that close, Ragnar,” he scoffs.

“Maybe the concept of kinship is foreign to a dog like you,” Ragnar smirks. “But my brother and my mate are friends. I trust them both with my life. Can you say the same about your mate, Xav? Do you even know where she is or who she’s with?”
I look up to see both Kings shift uncomfortably in their seats. The Alpha King, who has been eating, finally loses his appetite and pushes the plate away from him. That was a very low blow, and he knows it. However, I press my lips together to keep myself from laughing at his expression.
“How long do we have to be here?” the Alpha King asks.
“Is there anyone we can contact for you? Someone you can really trust. This is definitely something you need to think really hard about,” I tell him. He shakes his head.
“I’m not happy about this, but you and Ragnar are the only ones I trust at the moment. I don’t know how far this has gone.”
“Before we start dealing with this situation, we need to talk about what you two motherfuckers did with the Romanos in Artume. What the fuck?” Ragnar growls. The Alpha King looks over at the Rogue King expectantly.
Xavier sits back and looks down at the empty plates in front of him. Getting caught was never part of their plan, and honestly, if things had gone the way they wanted, none of this would have come to light. The idiot in this group was Luna Romano, who wanted more than she should have. His eyes move to me, and he lets out a heavy sigh.
“He was supposed to mark you before marrying the beta. Keeping you complacent was the only way to keep this going. Once you had that mark on you, we would gain access to your mother’s private files.
“I’m sorry to tell you this, but Santiago was with the beta for years. They planned on killing you afterwards. We inherited this,” he looks over at the Alpha King. “His father started it and forced my father into it. When it paid out and became a system, it contributed to economic growth in Artume City.
“I brought in Guerrero because he was the most useful. His younger brother was the mastermind behind the underground. That’s how your family got involved. Your mother threatened to expose us, and she told him,” he glances over at Ragnar. “Romano intercepted the call, and I sent in Guerrero to take care of the situation. It was nothing personal, just business. Arthur didn’t know,” he looks over at the Alpha King. “The day we got caught was just before you were supposed to be marked.
“I don’t know how he found out, but we were fighting and didn’t notice we were surrounded by shadows. You have to understand that this was the only way to keep everything balanced. Had I brought it to the light, we would have been removed, and our race’s economy would have plummeted.”
“We’d be in charge,” the Vampire King scoffs. “You killed the former Lycan Queen, her daughter, the next Lycan Queen and Lycan generals all in one night and for what? Your status? You’re a fucking mongrel. You will never stop being a mongrel.”
“Stop,” I say, looking up at the Vampire King. “I’m not any happier about this than you are, sir, but there’s nothing we can do to fix this. Fighting one another is not how we’re going to get out of this. Those things are still out there.

“Now that we know the truth, we need to figure out how we’re going to move forward. If either of you tries to escape tonight,” I stand and reach out to spin the water in the Rogue King’s body. He groans and stumbles out of his chair as I go a little faster than I should. I release him, and he begins to cough up water. “That’s the way you’ll die. I don’t have to be within range, and you can’t exactly remove the water from your body. Have a good night.”
