Elara said, “Did you see that? When Albert walked out of Ms. Finley’s office, he closed the door so carefully, but when he got back to his own office, he nearly slammed it off its hinges.”
“What’s the point? Ms. Finley can’t even hear it,” whispered the colleague sitting across from Elara.
That remark immediately set off a wave of gossip in the office.
“What do you think Albert meant by that?” someone asked.
Everyone shook their heads.
No one had a clue.
Elara frowned, staring at Albert’s office door for quite a while.
‘I think I know what’s going on, but I can’t bring myself to say it, Elara thought.
Finally, a new female intern with connections, who’d just been transferred to the CEO’s office, whispered, “Do you think Albert has a crush on Ms. Finley?
“I mean, only someone who’s really interested in you would do something like force a kiss in an elevator, right?”
Her comment snapped everyone to attention.
Elara sat in her chair, goosebumps prickling her skin.
She stayed silent, not joining in the discussion.
‘If Albert really has fallen for Elnora, Elara thought, ‘then he’s doomed.’
‘He’s really done for if that’s the case, Elara added silently to herself.
Elara had been by Elnora’s side for years.
She knew Elnora’s personality inside out.
Albert left Elnora to deal with the guests all by herself on their wedding day, and that was like leaving a landmine in her heart, just waiting to blow up.
Even though Elnora looked like she didn’t care, she’d already added Albert to her grudge list.
Elara didn’t join in the gossip. She just sat there, feeling like things were about to get really interesting.
It was lunchtime.
Stella’s assistant messaged Elara. [Elara, could you let Ms. Finley know that Stella will be bringing her investors over at 2 PM to sign the wager contract? We hope Ms. Finley can have it ready in advance.]
[Stella’s only condition is: if she wins, she wants Ms. Finley to divorce Albert and let him go]
Elara frowned when she saw the two messages from Stella’s assistant.

After lunch. Elara went upstairs to fill Elnora in on what had happened.
She knocked and walked in, only to find Reese sitting on the couch in Elnora’s office.
Elnora was on the other side, taking her time with her meal while one of the staff plated her lunch for her.
Elara glanced at the dishes on the table.
It was clear Reese had gone out of her way to bring these dishes from the Campbell family for Elnora.
Elnora didn’t like to talk while eating; she ate in complete silence.
When she picked up her food, she deliberately separated the dishes on the plate into two distinct halves.
She only ate from the side closest to her, never touching the other half.
Reese caught on right away to what Elnora was doing and remarked quietly, “Don’t bother saving any food for that brat. Let him go hungry for once; it won’t kill him.”
Albert absolutely hated celery anyway.
‘Albert is still in a video conference. He probably won’t have time to come down for lunch, and he’s got other things scheduled for this afternoon,” Elara said.
Reese’s lips curled into a satisfied smile at that.
Seeing this, Elara figured it wasn’t the right time to bring up the wager contract with Elnora. Just as she was about to slip out of the office, Reese spoke up in a calm voice.
‘Is there something you need?” Reese asked.
Elara’s heart tightened at those three simple words.
Honestly, Elnora and Reese had such a similar aura that it was almost uncanny.
The instant Reese spoke, Elara felt just like she did in those early days at the Finley Group, back when she barely knew Elnora.
She took a moment to steady herself, then quickly replied, “Mrs. Campbell, it’s nothing. I just came to check if Ms. Finley had eaten on time.”
No way am I bringing up the wager contract in front of Reese, Elara thought to herself. ‘I know better than that’
Reese glanced at Elara a couple more times, only then recalling that Elara had been the bridesmaid at Elnora and Albert’s wedding.
She just nodded without another word.
Elara left as quietly as she came.
Once the door closed, Reese remarked to Elnora, “Your assistant is pretty clever”

‘She’s got a good head on her shoulders.”
Elnora just gave a small nod.
“Elara’s been by my side for years. She knows how to work with me,” Elnora replied.
Reese gave a soft hum, then said, “I heard about your wager with Stella.”
Elnora paused, setting down her utensils as she heard Reese’s words.
“Yes, Mrs. Campbell. I was actually planning to explain it to you after we met at the dinner party tomorrow.” Elnora replied.
Reese waved her hand dismissively. “No need to explain.
‘I just heard the wager contract has something to do with your marriage to Albert.”
Elnora nodded. “Yes.”
Reese paused, her tone sharp. “Stella sure has guts, making a demand like that. Someone needs to teach her a lesson.”
When Reese first heard about Elnora’s wager with Stella, she barely reacted.
But she never expected Stella to be so bold, actually daring to demand that Elnora divorce Albert if she won the bet.
Elnora and Albert were already done, but Stella was still scheming, refusing to give up.
Noticing Reese’s sour expression, Elnora glanced up and replied softly, “Reese, you really don’t need to let this bother you. Please, don’t take this to heart.
‘I can handle things myself. If you step in, it’ll just make it look like the Campbell family is picking on her.”
Reese met Elnora’s gaze, paused for a moment, then reached out and took her hand, speaking seriously. “Elnora, I know you’re a smart girl.
You should know better than anyone. Albert’s not a bad person.
‘He might’ve done some foolish things before the wedding, but I know my son. He’s really not a bad person.”
Elnora sat quietly, letting Reese take her hand without protest.
Reese sighed, gave Elnora’s hand a gentle pat, and said with a wry smile, “Honestly, Albert really is asking for trouble sometimes. Elnora, you do what you need to do.
‘But Albert’s my son, and when push comes to shove, I can’t help but want to plead his case.
‘If he hasn’t done anything unforgivable in this marriage, I hope you can give him a chance. I really believe he can be a good husband.”
Elnora kept her silence.
Since Elnora didn’t reply, Reese didn’t push her any further and simply shifted the conversation
“I’ll have someone send over a gown for tomorrow’s dinner party,” Reese said
Elnora gave a small nod at last.

“It’s no trouble at all,” she said. “I’ve always dreamed of having a daughter, and now I truly see you as one of my own.

Elnora nodded softly. “Thank you.”
Reese gave a gentle smile. “I won’t bother you anymore. You’ve had lunch, so take a break and rest for a while. I’m going to go have a chat with that brat Albert.”
