“Let’s go, Rogue King. You’re letting an omega show you up,” I shout, stopping to catch my breath so that he can catch up to me.

I’ve prepared a meal plan and several immune-system boosters. He was a mess. Malnourished, stiff from being confined, and completely done with everything. I know those restrictions all too well. The Alpha King is in no better shape than he is. The difference is that the Alpha King is all in with getting his life back.

The two of us finish our five-mile run together. The others had been done a while ago, and I find that trying to stay back with the Rogue King is a lot more tiring than trying to pass the others. I sit down on the edge of the hill that overlooks the beach side of the base. It takes him a moment to catch his breath. I can hear him heaving and gagging. I offer him some electrolytes when he finally comes to sit next to me.

“I can’t remember the last time I had difficulty keeping up with anything,” he coughs and then takes a sip.

“Consider yourself lucky. I had to do that after every surgery to prepare for the next one. Eight times,” I pull my legs up and watch the waves below.

“Your water affinity isn’t as powerful as it should be,” he says after a while.

“I know. I’ve had a few others tell me that I should get combat training for it.”

“You should,” he agrees.

“That’s not what I want to use it for,” I take a deep breath.

“Maybe not, but it should be something you need as the Lycan Queen. You’re always going to be vulnerable to attacks. You know I’ve never given a King’s order,” he smiles.

“What? Never?”

“Not once. When I was a kid, my dad kept me in a kennel. He tossed me leftovers or things he didn’t want directly from his plate. He wouldn’t give me a bowl or anything. Sometimes the food made it into my cage, and sometimes I had to reach for it before his dogs did.

“He used his King’s order on me for everything. It was Ragnar’s father who found me. He broke the cage I was in and let me out. The only reason I wasn’t covered in shit and piss was that he would drag my cage out to spray me down every morning.

“When I was free, there were times when I would catch myself saying the mean shit he would say to me. Times when I realized that the hurt and anger I was holding onto might potentially turn me into my father 1 didn’t want to be that.” he gets this distant look in his eyes. “But it feels like I have a destiny and the path always leads back to it.”

“Comparing yourself to him is what leads you back. I’m sorry he did that to you. You have a lot of rage you Keeping it down is not easy. Your wolf is insanely powerful because of it. But I have to say that I am very impressed by you. Even after all that, there’s not a single sign of you going feral. It means you’re resistant

“This is going to sound harsh, but I had to live like that for a bit as well You have to accept what’s in front of you. I know it hurts, trust me. I still wake up in the middle of the night covered in sweat and scared out of my

“I was the one who killed Santiago and his mother. I loved them. Maybe a sick part of me still does because these people made me who I am now. All I ever wanted to do was help people. Our people. I didn’t want them to feel as lonely or lost as I did after my parents died.

“I endured all of that with the minimal amount of love from my mate and his family, and still I wanted to please them. To make sure they knew that although I might not be as mighty as them, they could still count

on me.

“There are times when I catch myself being that pathetic again. All I can think about is how I’m not good enough for any of this. I don’t know how I even got here, and I’m scared that I’m going to fuck it all up. I’m scared that Ragnar and the people who are putting their faith in me are going to see how utterly broken and

useless I am.

“I pour all of my energy into trying to learn more about the situation I’m in. I’ve come to terms with the fact that, even if it’s not a necessity, I have to make sure I’m doing my best to be in the position I am in. I don’t know how to stop or even relax.”

“Are you tired?”

“I am so fucking tired,” I laugh. Anastasia’s aura comes within range, which means she’s going to be popping up soon. “It’s so exhausting. But I don’t know how to live any other way. It’s getting better, actually. Ragnar is a big help. So is my grandmother and his father. Do you have any family?”

“No,” he shakes his head. “I only had Hailey.”

“Biiitch!” We both turn around to see Anastasia skipping over to us.

“Who is that?” he asks.

“I think she might be my secret lover. I haven’t consented, but I doubt she’s ever going to leave me alone,” I laugh. He grins and stands to help me up.

Anastasia stops and looks the Rogue King over. She nods and looks over at me with a smirk.

“Too bad he’s claimed. Where the hell have you been?”

“Here. Ana, this is Xavier. The Rogue King. Xavier, this is Anastasia Polucci,” I introduce them.

“Oh, shit,” she says calmly.

“She is the Lycan Rogue Queen,” I inform him.

“And her best friend. So if you do anything to hurt her, I’ll put your pelt up in my office. I bet your doggy is just as gorgeous as you are,” she winks at him. “You’re training him?”

“Trying to. My methods are a little too close to pack wolves,” I admit.

“Perfect. Santiago is here with me. The big guy sent us over. Says he misses you,” she says playfully. I can tram you better than little Miss Cutesy Wootsy,”

Xavier looks her over and shrugs. He walks in the direction we came from to give us some space.

“Don’t,” I warn her when she opens her mouth to say something to him.

“You’re just out here collecting strays, huh?”

“That’s me. The Queen of strays,” I laugh. She grins and pulls me into a hug.

“I’m so sorry I wasn’t here to break someone’s fucking face when you got hurt. How are you feeling? Does the crack still hurt?” she points at my head.

“It’s healed. Thank you. I’m glad you weren’t here, or you might have joined the others in that manhunt, and more people might have gotten hurt.”

“Santiago found the Raptor,” she says as we walk down the hill. I pause and look up at her. “The wolf shot himself in there. He knew we were on him.”

“Someone sent him,” I sigh. “Ragnar sent me this way because he doesn’t think I’m safe back home.”

“He’s right, little wolf. You’re not safe. A whole lot of people want you gone. It’s better for you to keep your head down,” she continues to walk. I reach out for her hand to stop her. She turns back to smile at me.

“I’m really good at that. But I can’t just sit here with this hanging over my head.”

“I know,” she nods. “Come on. I brought you some new toys and your little doctor bestie. We got hair dye and civilian clothes. Since no one knows where we are, we can go hunting.”

“I don’t know if I’ve ever told you this, Ana, but you’re my best friend,” I laugh.

“You don’t have to tell me,” she pretends to flip her hair. “I know.”
