She remembered when her parents had just divorced. Her mother hadn’t dared to let anyone know, and she’d taken Tracy with her. They didn’t even have enough food to eat. When they were so hungry they had to drink tap water, her mother had gently coaxed her, “Tracy, I’ll sing you a lullaby. When you fall asleep, you won’t be hungry anymore.”
At the memory, Tracy’s eyes reddened. She choked back a sob and demanded, “You said you had the finance department send money every month. Did you ever once check whose pocket that money went into? Right after you and Mom divorced, we were so hungry we had to drink tap water just to fill our stomachs. Have you ever felt that kind of pain and helplessness? In all these years, you never once asked if we were dead or alive, but you still expect us to be grateful to you. Have you no shame?”
Her mother had been out of the workforce for a long time, and now she had a child. She failed interview after interview and couldn’t find a job. If Morgan hadn’t found out what was happening and located them, they would have starved to death on the street.
And now, Trevor was standing here, telling her she should be grateful. It was utterly laughable.
Hearing Tracy say they never received the money, Trevor was visibly shocked. That was impossible. He had specifically ordered the finance department to send them ten thousand a month for living expenses. How could they not have received it?
Faye’s heart skipped a beat when she heard Tracy’s words. She hurried forward. “Tracy, that’s all in the past. There’s no point in assigning blame now, is there? I’m begging you, just help your father and Jared, please?”
Of course, the money had gone straight into her pocket. But she would never admit it, and she couldn’t let Tracy keep asking questions, or she’d be exposed. She knew it was a long shot, but she had to try.
As usual, Tracy’s presence in the Xander family was just a constant source of trouble for her and her daughter.
Yvonne also looked at Tracy, her eyes red. “I know you don’t like us, but you can’t keep holding onto the past! Those things are over. We can’t dwell on what happened; we have to look forward, don’t we?”
It had been her idea all those years ago. She couldn’t stand Tracy and her mother. If they had left the Xander family, they weren’t Xanders anymore. Why should they get to use Xander money? So, she had arranged for the finance department to transfer the money to her own card every month.
All these years, Trevor had never once asked about it. She had no idea why he was suddenly bringing it up today, catching her completely off guard. Thankfully, her mother had been

Tracy looked at the mother-daughter pair coolly. “What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue? I have a reasonable suspicion that money went right into your pockets. Why else would you both be so agitated? This is a textbook case of a guilty person giving themselves away, don’t you think? Yvonne, what goes around comes around. You and your mother will pay for everything you’ve done.”
Although she had long suspected them, seeing their reactions confirmed it, and a wave of anguish washed over her. If they hadn’t interfered, she and her mother wouldn’t have suffered so much. Her mother wouldn’t have left her, so young.
At the thought, she wanted nothing more than to strangle them both. But she couldn’t. It wasn’t worth throwing her life away for two shameless people. She would make them lose the Xanders’ trust, piece by piece. She would make them lose everything they had. That would make them truly suffer. Letting them die would be too easy. She had plenty of patience to play this game.
Trevor’s face darkened, and his eyes widened as he stared at Faye and Yvonne. “Is what Tracy said true? Did you really withhold their ten thousand a month?”
If they had, he was deeply disappointed. He gave Faye and Yvonne hundreds of thousands a month, not even counting their shopping expenses. Ten thousand was nothing to them. To steal that… it was heartless.
Faye stammered, “N-no, that’s not it! We didn’t know anything about it. We just don’t want to see you and your daughter fighting over this. The money you give us every month… we don’t even spend it all! It’s just sitting in the bank! Why would we ever take their money? Tracy, if you’re going to frame us, at least find a better excuse. This one is so full of holes anyone can see right through it!”
She was trembling when Trevor questioned her, but she forced herself to remain calm and give a steady explanation.
