Chapter 23 The Girl Surrounded by Attention

“It’s the Jacksons’ little princess!”

“I heard even that unpredictable Thomas gives her whatever she wants.”

“She’s just as pretty as the rumors said…”

Among all the praise, there were inevitably a few discordant notes.

“Are they serious?”

From the back row, a girl in a burgundy dress muttered under her breath, “I didn’t get this kind of praise when I walked in.”

Maya shook her head.

Sometimes, having sharp hearing and awareness was a curse.

In just this short moment, she’d already picked up at least seven different whispers.

God knew she didn’t even want to hear any of it.

Alfred studied her thoughtfully, then glanced at the girl at the door.

Every sound in the classroom entered his ears clearly, sorted and processed in his mind as he pieced together the information.

Then… he leaned closer to Maya and whispered in her ear, his tone flat as he stated, “You’re scared of that idiot?”

Alfred never understood tact. He asked directly.

To him, based on the data he had, innocence and naivety equaled stupidity.

Given the environment he grew up in, Maya was smart, his brothers were smart, and his whole family was abnormal. So, when he saw a girl this sheltered, his first thought was, This has to be an idiot, right?

Maya whipped her head around. “I’m not scared!”

Her voice rose as she shoved his head away, embarrassed and annoyed.

Alfred tilted his head. “I’m just stating facts. You have PTSD.

“Maybe you didn’t even notice it yourself. The moment you saw her, your pupils contracted, your breathing sped up, your fingers trembled, and you instinctively grabbed my hand to calm down. That’s a textbook trauma response.”

Maya didn’t even bother arguing. Alfred was too smart to deal with.

She gave up. “Fine, I just don’t wanna see her.

“I don’t like her.”

She stated her feelings plainly.

Maya felt like Kaia had some kind of strange magnetism. Just standing there, she made everyone like her.

She suddenly turned and hugged Alfred tightly, her voice low. “Will you stay with me?”

Alfred realized Maya had never hugged him this proactively before.

She was uneasy.

She was relying on him.

After all, in this unfamiliar environment, he was her only constant ally.

That realization made the corner of Alfred’s lips lift slightly.

For the first time, he felt a trace of enjoyment toward this terrible school. His voice slowed. “Of course I will. I hate this place. I hate everyone here. You don’t like it either, right? So we only have each other.

“I’m not a useless brother or one of those useless adults.”

He wasn’t like those adults in TV shows who only talked.

The boy locked his gaze on her. “You can trust me.”

“Of course, I trust you.” Maya’s voice quickly regained its energy.

Whether anyone else liked her didn’t matter anymore.

As long as no one tried to hurt her, that was enough.

Alfred even offered a suggestion. “Do you want revenge on her?”

He didn’t know what kind of history they had. Maya came from an orphanage. They shouldn’t have had any connection at all.

“Huh?” Maya tilted her head and actually thought about it. “Then what, are we supposed to act like villains in a TV show? Mock her and mess with her?”

She shook her head immediately. “That kind of character always ends up miserable.”

She could play the role of a petty villain herself, but someone like Alfred-high IQ and low EQ-trying to act like a dumb villain? That would just be weird.

“So that’s all you can think of? Provoking her?” He looked at her, covering his mouth with one hand as he sighed, his voice muffled. “You’re hopeless, Maya.”

Still, he couldn’t expect Maya to understand how to make someone she hated disappear.

It didn’t matter.

He would always help her.

No matter what.

After all, he was her brother.

“Let’s just behave ourselves,” Maya said. She didn’t want them both to become outcasts on the very first day.

Kids from ordinary backgrounds should just blend into the background in a class full of rich kids.

“You idiot.” He concluded. “You’re way too timid.”

“You’re the idiot.” Maya smacked his head with a book, annoyed.

Alfred frowned automatically. “You’re gonna knock the intelligence out of me.”

“I told you already, you don’t need to be that smart. Guys who are too smart have trouble getting married.”

He had no comeback.

He could never win an argument against Maya.

Even when Alfred tried to cite scientific arguments during their fights, she always defeated him with nonsensical logic.

In the end, the siblings both lay on their desks, bored, watching the girl surrounded by attention.

Kaia was like a little sun. Teachers and students alike adored her. She opened her backpack, revealing all kinds of pastries made by a professional baker, along with candy and chocolate, and generously handed them out to everyone.
