Chapter 68 What Are They DoingÂ
Toby asked again, “What were they even doing there?”Â
“What else would they do?” The boy shrugged casually. “They talk, eat desserts, sip tea, and maybe nap together. That place gets lively at noon. It’s nothing like our side.”Â
Toby’s expression sank at once, and a cold weight settled over his features.Â
He thought about Annie’s circle and felt a sharp wave of disgust rise inside him.Â
He bit down on his lip, and certainty hardened in his chest as he decided they would absolutely ruin Maya.Â
He called Annie, and his voice carried restrained irritation and a cutting edge. “You took Maya to your building’s activity room?”Â
“Yeah, I did. What’s wrong?” Annie caught the anger in his tone right away.Â
“Send her back,” Toby said in a commanding voice, then stopped as a thought struck him. He forced his frustration down. “Forget it. I’ll come over myself.”Â
He couldn’t accept Maya stepping into that kind of chaotic social space, and urgency surged through him. At that moment, he wanted nothing more than to drag her out of there immediately.Â
“Wait,” Annie started, yet she did not even finish before he ended the call without hesitation.Â
She stared at her phone for two seconds, and her gaze drifted without focus.Â
“Does he always hang up like that?” Maya asked.Â
Annie smiled. “Always doesn’t begin to cut it. He does it every single time.”Â
Maya spoke with complete sincerity. “You’re amazing. With patience like that, you’ll succeed at anything.”Â
A brief silence settled between them, and the room held that silence for a brief breath. Warm sunlight streamed through the tall windows of the girls’ lounge and spread across the polished floor. A soft scent of fruit tea lingered in the air, and the entire space felt gentle and bright.Â
The moment Toby stepped inside, he caught the faint trace of perfume drifting from the girls around him.Â
His brows drew together slightly. His gaze locked onto Maya, who sat upright in the vine-wrapped chair.Â
“Come with me,” Toby said as he ignored the stunned looks around him and reached to pull her away.Â
Maya flinched at his sudden appearance. “Are you okay?”Â
“Nothing’s wrong with me. I’m fine.”Â
He failed to notice her tone and reached out again, his movement edged with impatience.Â

Chapter 68 What Are They DoingÂ
Maya moved fast and slipped backward, then circled behind the chair with quick, light steps.Â
She gripped the backrest and revealed only half her face, and her voice stayed firm. “I won’t leave with you! I like it here, and I’m staying!”Â
She didn’t need to make friends, because watching the girls laugh and talk already gave her a rare sense of ease. That light and easy atmosphere wrapped around her, and she had not felt that kind of calm in a long time.Â
Annie felt a headache build as tension pressed against her temples. She had heard the anger in his voice earlier, yet she never expected him to walk in like this.Â
“She just got here, and she really likes it,” Annie said.Â
“This place?” Toby paused for two seconds and swept his gaze across the room. When he noticed the well- dressed girls gathered in small groups, his dislike only deepened.Â
“What’s so great about it?”Â
He pulled his lips into a cold line and spoke under his breath, “This place is awful.”Â
His voice stayed low, yet the quiet room carried every word clearly.Â
Every girl in the lounge turned toward him at once, and shock filled their expressions.Â
In their eyes, Toby, the heir of the Clarks, always kept a polished and composed image in public.Â
No one expected such harsh words to come from him.Â
Maya covered her face without thinking, and heat rose across her skin. She could feel every gaze land on her with sharp intensity.Â
A girl close to Annie leaned in and asked in a low voice, “Is he really your brother?”Â
Maya blinked and played along. “I don’t know him.”Â
Annie felt her vision dim for a brief second, and disbelief flashed through her.Â
He hadn’t left her even a trace of dignity.Â
Toby knew his tone sounded harsh, and awareness flickered through him. In the past, he might have held himself back and calmly taken Maya away.Â
But right now, irritation filled him completely.Â
George’s constant harassment and several days without proper rest had worn him down. His patience had nearly vanished.Â
“I never told you to bring her here,” Toby pressed forward. “I told you to watch her.”Â
Annie had still tried to explain in a calm voice. “She doesn’t have any other friends at school. Didn’t you notice?”Â

Chapter 68 What Are They DoingÂ
Girls formed their own circles. So did high society.Â
Even group photos carried meaning, because placement showed status and closeness.Â
For a girl from a strong background to have no friends, not even shallow ones, that felt abnormal.Â
Toby understood that logic clearly, yet he refused to see it as a problem.Â
“She has Alfred, and there’s another girl whose name I forgot,” he said.Â
“My friends can include her too.”Â
