Chapter 69 Emotionally Stunted

Toby had a whole mess of so-called friends who kept showing up like non-player characters, just to remind everyone he existed.

Annie couldn’t believe it.

She nearly questioned her own hearing in that exact moment.

Is that even something a human being could say out loud?

Friends weren’t interchangeable, like a public office appointment.

Yet he acted like they could simply be reassigned to Maya. Honestly, she never started conversations with Toby. She usually just followed his lead, like a calm counselor dealing with a difficult student.

It had always been easy to manage him.

So hearing something this unhinged from him all at once almost shattered her composure.

Toby had no intention of wasting more time on Annie.

His face stayed blank as he reached for Maya.

Maya immediately ducked behind Annie.

The three of them moved like a chaotic game of keep-away. Annie blocked him twice before she finally snapped, her voice sharp with frustration. “Can you leave?”

She still had her dignity, unlike him.

“Step out of the girls’ activity room. Just for now. I will send Maya back after lunch ends.”

Maya peeked out from behind Annie.

She clasped her hands together, lips pulled down, eyes glossy and pleading. “Exactly. I just want to stay here a little. Our lounge is so boring.”

Toby’s chest tightened for a split second at her expression, and his tone softened without him meaning it.

“No.”

He looked around the room, then bit the inside of his cheek as irritation returned. He turned on Annie instead, voice sharpening again. In his mind, she was trying to pull Maya into something she should not be part of.

“Why are you taking my sister anywhere without asking me?”

“Maya is not a toddler. Why would I need your permission?”

Toby tilted his head slightly, expression turning colder.

“I am her brother.”

Chapter 69 Emotionally Stunted

He didn’t care about politeness anymore. He pulled away from Annie without effort and gave her circle of friends a flat, dismissive look.

“Annie, you always do this,” he said, almost amused. “You pick the wrong kind of people. I never interfered with your social life, so do not bring them near Maya.”

His words swept across everyone in the room like a blade.

Annie’s expression tightened immediately.

She had always been patient with him.

But her patience always came with one condition. He was supposed to at least respect her in public.

Not tear down everyone around her like they meant nothing.

Annie liked luxury things. She liked beauty. She liked attention. She liked being seen.

So what? She had not committed any crime. Even dangerous people in this world were allowed to exist freely.

He knew her flaws.

He had always known.

Yet he still spoke to her like she was something he tolerated out of kindness.

A voice in her memory echoed with his usual tone. “A good girl doesn’t act like this, but I still like you.”

Annie let out a sharp laugh, her anger finally breaking through. “I never noticed how vile you are inside.”

Toby had always managed to appear polite in public before, even when he was difficult.

But not now.

He looked genuinely irritated.

“I’m vile?” he said flatly.

“I could say the same thing about you dragging my sister around people like this.”

His head tilted slightly, eyes cold and cutting as they landed on her.

Annie sucked in a breath.

What a waste of his perfect face.

There were moments where disbelief turned into laughter, and this was one of them.

“You impotent man!” Her face cooled in an instant, and she finally said what she had been holding back. “What gives you the right to call my circle inappropriate?”

Toby showed no reaction to the insult aimed at him. He answered the question like it was already settled.

Chapter 69 Emotionally Stunted

“Because you all act the same.”

He ulted his head slightly, and his eyes carried undisguised contempt. “You all spend your time trying to latch onto someone useful so you can lift up your families.

“You push away anyone around me every single time, not because you care about me, but because you want everyone to see you as the only woman beside me. That way, people assume you are my future fiancĂ©e, and your family benefits from it.”

“So what? You still walked right into it. You selfish man.”

Annie’s expression turned sharp and incredulous. “I’ve tolerated you for a long time. Do you just enjoy controlling people? Did you grow up starved for attention? Did your parents never buy you anything you actually wanted so now you dress me up like a doll? You keep throwing expensive things on me like I am some display piece.”

Toby always gave her all kinds of jewelry.

Even though it was all expensive, Annie could not stand his need to control everything. He would give her everything he had, then expect her to wear it and show herself exactly the way he wanted the next day.
