Chapter 58 Run

Jenny gripped the ruler tightly, fully intending to bring it down on the other guy’s head.

Instead, he caught her arm and locked it in his grip. He laughed under his breath, muttered “little brat,” and reached out to yank Jenny by the hair.

Jenny went dead silent.

Annie walked in right at that moment.

She stopped cold in the doorway.

Okay, seriously.

How do these kids manufacture this much chaos every single day?

A look of pure bewilderment crossed her face.

She watched the two older boys steadily gaining the upper hand, and anxiety gnawed at her bottom lip. Then Toby’s instructions surfaced in her memory.

Whatever happened, she wasn’t about to take Toby’s gift for nothing.

Annie hovered in the doorway for two whole seconds, wavering.

Then she made up her mind. She was really doing this.

Terrified that Maya was about to get seriously hurt, the girl strode forward in her heels, raised the phone in her hand, and drove it straight down onto the head of the creep who’d dared grab a girl by the hair.

“You actually thought grabbing a girl by the hair was acceptable?” Annie genuinely treasured every strand on her own head, and watching him do that made her scalp crawl with secondhand agony. She slammed the phone down harder. “Get out of here!”

A fourteen-year-old girl’s fury was a savage, specific kind of force. Her sharp nails dug into skin and drew more pain than any punch could.

Alfred seized the opening. He slammed Jonathan’s head into the floor.

While Jonathan reeled from the impact, Alfred wrenched himself free, snatched a nearby chair, and brought it crashing down across the back of the older student who’d been chasing his sister.

The boy pitched forward and crumpled to the ground, splitting his lip on impact. “Ow, ow…”

“Breathe through it. Pain means you’re still alive.” Maya pressed her foot down on his head and smiled brightly. “When you’re dead, it won’t hurt anymore.”

The boy nearly choked on his own breath.

Annie and Jenny worked together, scratching and kicking until the older boys’ faces were streaked with welts and they had nothing left to fight back with.

By the time their teacher came rushing in after hearing the commotion, this was the scene that greeted her.

Their teacher stood in the doorway, speechless.

Maya’s hair had been yanked a couple of times during all the running around, and it stuck out in every direction. She absently reached up and tried to smooth it down.

It got worse.

Jenny straightened out her own yanked-up hair, looked down at the two older students sprawled on the floor, and felt a quiet bloom of satisfaction.

“All of you. My office. Now.”

The homeroom teacher’s voice cut through the doorway, flat and cold.

Maya and Alfred exchanged a glance, then followed along without a trace of concern.

The office had the air conditioning running, and the cool air was a genuine relief. Maya found a seat and settled into it like she belonged there.

Jenny immediately planted herself right beside her.

Alfred took the seat next to Jenny, and Annie took the last one.

The four of them claimed every single chair without hesitation.

Their teacher nearly laughed at the sight of it. “You’re all awfully comfortable, aren’t you?”

“Maya, Rufus,” she continued, her tone still measured, “what happened today qualifies as a physical altercation. School policy requires us to contact your parents to resolve the situation.”

Her voice stayed relatively even.

But the moment parents got mentioned, every single face in the room soured.

“No.” Maya was the first to protest. “We can handle this ourselves!”

Her amber eyes went wide as saucers, and she pressed her hands together in a plea.

“We’re all very mature and responsible young people. Please, please don’t call my parents.”

“I can’t notify your families?” Their teacher found the whole thing faintly amusing.

Normally, she turned a blind eye to whatever conflicts broke out in her class.

These were all kids from influential families. Picking a fight with any of them wasn’t worth it, so looking the other way had always been the easier path.

After all, ordinary bullying was practically a fixture in any school.

But when it came down to it, a brawl this utterly unhinged was something she’d never seen before.

Pretending she hadn’t noticed was simply impossible.

Chapter 58 Hun

“Absolutely not, please!”

The students said it almost in perfect unison.

Each of them had a polished, respectable image to protect at home.

If their parents found out, they were all going to hear about it the moment they got back. Kids this age feared nothing in the world except getting called to the principal’s office and having their parents summoned.

But the situation still needed to be dealt with.

“I’ll have my uncle come,” Jonathan said quickly. He was a good student and had no interest in his parents finding out. “I’ll reach out to him. He can come instead.”

Jenny piped up. “I’ll have my dad come!”

Rufus crossed his arms. “I’ll have my mom come and have all of you shot dead.”

Every kid rattled off a family member like they were chanting a battle cry.

“I’ll… I’ll…” Maya noticed everyone’s eyes land on her and fumbled for a second. “I’ll have my… come?”

The last two words struck even her as faintly ridiculous.

Because honestly, what good was her brother going to do?

He was even less reliable than her dad.

“I shouldn’t need to have anyone called in, right, Ms. Peterson?” Annie tried to extract herself from the entire situation. She’d been a model of proper behavior her entire life, and getting caught in a group brawl was the last thing she needed attached to her name.

She absolutely could not let her family find out.

Her mother would never look at her the same way.

“You were quite involved, Annie,” their teacher said, and the way she said it carried a weight Annie didn’t miss.

Out of everyone in that room, that girl had been the most ferocious fighter by a wide margin.

She’d come in swinging a phone like a weapon. If that boy’s skull hadn’t been as hard as it was, she would’ve given him a serious concussion.
