Chapter 79 A Striking Resemblance

In the end, the computer screen stopped on a girl named Maya.

The enrollment date and age were clearly written on it.

The moment her photo loaded, Thomas felt his breath catch.

It felt like all the blood in his body rushed to his head at once, only to freeze a second later.

The girl in the photo had a pair of clear amber eyes, a youthful face, and delicate features.

Thomas stared intensely at those eyes and the shape of her face. His fingers tightened without him knowing, almost crushing the mouse.

She looks too much like her.

It wasn’t just the color of her eyes, but also the outline of her brows and eyes…

If there was one difference between her and Lawrence, it was that this girl had more baby fat on her face, and her smile was brighter and happier.

She looked like a child who had grown up in a loving environment.

He immediately called back, his voice turning raspy because he was in such a rush.

“That child named Maya-do you have her home address, or any more detailed information?”

The assistant on the other end of the line sounded a bit hesitant, “I’m sorry, Mr. Jackson.

“We accessed the school database. This child’s file… aside from her name, class, and age, the rest of the information seems to have been specially handled.

“Or it wasn’t entered completely when she enrolled.

“We tried other channels, but we don’t have any more detailed information for now.”

Thomas refused to accept it. “Nothing from other channels either?”

“Nothing.”

Thomas forced himself to calm down. He had survived years of searching; he couldn’t afford to be too reckless now.

He kept thinking. “Check again and see if she has a brother.”

“Get the files on the boy who enrolled on the same day as her.”

This time, the response came much faster.

The boy in the enrollment photo had a cold expression and refined features.

But, he shared no resemblance with Maya at all.

Thomas kept going through the information he had.

He realized that the data he received was extremely limited. Everything about this family felt strange.

That man named Raymond was clearly just an ordinary man.

How did he manage to send both children to the international program?

Maybe asking Kaia could give him some answers.

Thomas leaned back in his chair, letting out a slow breath and closing his eyes.

But in his mind, his son Lawrence’s cold and sharp words echoed at the wrong time.

“Do you even miss the past?

“You’re always stuck in the past, but to you, I don’t matter, my sister doesn’t matter. You only care about yourself, drowning in your own pain and acting like you’re deeply devoted. It’s disgusting.”

After his wife died, Thomas really had been depressed for a long time.

He shut himself off, numbing himself with work and alcohol. In some ways, he really had ignored the pain of his surviving son.

“You don’t really love anyone. You only love yourself.”

That sentence from Lawrence cut him open like a knife, exposing his selfishness.

And Kaia…

The very existence of that child was his way of deceiving himself.

Three years after his daughter went missing, he had adopted a baby girl of a similar age, trying to use her to fill that empty space in his heart.

When Kaia’s greedy biological parents tried to blackmail him again, he didn’t hesitate to hire someone to deal with them.

Thomas had always been ruthless. When he acted, he left no room for anything else.

He never cared if Kaia would hate him if she ever found out.

In fact, since he could do something like that, it meant he never really cared about her feelings at all. She was just a substitute.

If Kaia was lucky enough, she might never learn the truth about her biological parents being killed.

Thinking about this, Thomas leaned back in his chair.

Another long wait passed.

Getting information about Wendy and Raymond turned out to be much easier.

One was a housewife, and the other was an employee at some company.

“Is this all we have on their family?”

Thomas found it ridiculous.

For people like them, complex information wasn’t scary.

What was scary was this kind of simplicity that was almost a blank slate.

The simpler it was, the fewer clues there were.

Where did this family come from? Where was their specific workplace? What was their home address? These were all blank. There was not a single bit of useful news.

The only thing Thomas could do now was wait until class time and go directly to the school to find that girl.

As long as he could take her for a DNA test, everything would become clear.

Completely unaware that she had already been targeted, Maya rubbed her head.

It hurt a little.

It was already late at night.

But, she was wide awake, like she had slept too much earlier.

She heard something talking to her.

Maya pulled the blanket over her head and tried to close her eyes to sleep.

The voice in her mind didn’t go away.

It buzzed like a fly.

Maya finally couldn’t take it anymore. She suddenly sat up. “What are you?”

Alright, she realized this probably wasn’t a hallucination. Something was really there. Thinking about it, she had already been reborn, so something strange like this wasn’t that surprising.
