Feeling the pressure on his face increase, the grinding pain made the man lose all coherence. “H-he told us to get that girl’s… hair with the root… o-or maybe some skin… b-blood would be even better…Â
Wendy’s expression shifted from cold to stunned.Â
Even she could tell what that meant.Â
They wanted a DNA test.Â
Now that she had her answer, Wendy clapped her hands lightly and smiled. “Thank you for being so cooperative.”Â
Since they’d answered her questions so honestly, she decided to show a bit of mercy by ending things quickly.Â
Just before she made her move, Alfred had already grabbed Maya’s hand and pulled her out of the alley.Â
With their backs turned, the sound of bones snapping echoed from behind them, one after another. It was chilling to the core.Â
As the noise gradually faded into silence, Maya asked a slightly dumb question, “Are they okay?”Â
“Probably a little dead,” Alfred answered honestly.Â
Wendy, who had just caught up, overheard them. She shook out her hand and smiled, fully committed to her own logic. “Don’t worry, sweetie. If it hurt, they’d say something. If they’re not talking, it means it doesn’t hurt.”Â
“Mom,” Alfred corrected seriously, “they’re not talking because they’re dead.”Â
So it wasn’t that it didn’t hurt. They were just dead.Â
Wendy looked pleased. “Isn’t that the same thing? It didn’t hurt; they only felt it for a moment.Â
“They should be thanking me for being kind!”Â
Her unique reasoning left Alfred speechless.Â
“Wait, wait…” the only relatively normal one, Maya, cut in. “Maybe we shouldn’t keep discussing something this terrifying?”Â
This was starting to feel like a family of criminals calmly reviewing a murder afterward,Â
Wendy shrugged.Â
After the whole ordeal, they returned home. She sent the two kids off to do their homework, then called Raymond, who was overseas.Â
“Honey, we were followed today. I thought it was some leftover trouble you didn’t clean up, but the target was actually our daughter.”Â

“Isn’t that strange? Maya’s just a kid. Who could she possibly offend?”Â
“The guy’s last name is Jackson. I think it’s that Thomas person. Honestly, he’s so weird… Doesn’t he have his own daughter? Why is he targeting ours?”Â
Wendy rambled on. There was a brief silence on the other end.Â
“I understand.” Raymond’s voice, for once, had lost its usual laziness, replaced by a cold edge. “I’ll look into him.”Â
After hanging up, Raymond rubbed his face and immediately pulled up everything he could find on Thomas-social connections, family background, even confidential medical records and travel logs.Â
He had difficulty recognizing faces.Â
Unfortunate, but…Â
After killing so many people, faces no longer stayed in his memory.Â
Everyone looked more or less the same to him, so he always had to double-check his targets.Â
Kids all looked even more alike.Â
Once he pulled up Thomas’s detailed family records, Raymond rested his chin on his clasped hands and carefully studied the two children’s faces.Â
They were supposed to be twins, but Kaia and Lawrence didn’t look alike at all.Â
And that boy…Â
Actually looked more like his own daughter, Maya.Â
As for the girl…Â
Raymond’s gaze unfocused, drifting into old memories.Â
Sometimes, digging into someone’s background worked both ways.Â
While Raymond was using his hacking skills to dig up everything about Thomas, on the other side, Thomas was also staring at the investigation report his assistant had just delivered, lost in thought.Â
He had sent five people to bring the girl’s family in for a talk.Â
Now there was no response at all.Â
Thomas wasn’t worried about their safety. He simply assumed they had lost track of the targets and didn’t bother reporting back.Â
He was still thinking about how to approach the girl and get a DNA test done.Â
The most peaceful solution would be to talk to her parents.Â

Chapter 88 MisjudgmentsÂ
Yet after two days of investigation, Maya’s parents’ profiles were still almost blank.Â
The mother appeared to be an ordinary housewife.Â
The father looked like a completely unremarkable man who was plain to the point of being forgettable. He was poorly dressed and was working at an average company.Â
He even skipped work frequently and disappeared without explanation.Â
In the end, Thomas stared at Raymond’s photo and curled his lip into a faintly disdainful smile.Â
A nobody.Â
His arrogance made everything about Raymond seem unpleasant.Â
In a society where wealth meant everything, how could someone at the very bottom of the hierarchy- someone who looked like life could crush him at any moment-possibly provide a good life for a child? Thomas could almost picture Maya struggling in a cramped apartment, worrying about money.Â
And that only strengthened his resolve. Once he got the DNA results, he would bring her back, no matter what.Â
