Chapter 96 The Stranger at the School Gate

But the man’s other hand moved naturally onto her shoulder, pinning Maya in place.

The moment Maya tried to scream, her mouth was covered.

The boy wore a baseball cap, and when he leaned slightly forward, a striking face appeared right in front of

her.

So close she could clearly see his long, dense eyelashes, and those eyes that were curved like crescent

moons.

Most of the people in this country had irises that were dark brown.

Some were amber or black.

But this person-like her-had beautiful amber-colored eyes.

“Guessing game.”

His voice was bright, slightly lazy, and annoyingly playful. “Guess who?”

Maya nearly got goosebumps. Where did this guy come from?

Harmony International School had already dismissed most students, but because she left late, the streets were almost empty.

The man was tall. Leaning over her, his body blocked her completely from view.

No one noticed what was happening.

His hand over her mouth was loose but precise. It was enough to stop her from shouting, but it did not hurt

her.

Maya struggled briefly, quickly judging the gap in strength between them. She immediately stopped wasting energy.

“Come on, guess who I am. There’s a reward if you get it right.”

His voice was light, almost cheerful. With that face, it was hard to believe he was acting like a creep outside a school gate who was blocking a little girl.

And who the hell are you supposed to be?

This is insane!

Maya almost kicked him.

She forced herself to stay calm and stared at him carefully.

Up close, she could see clearly.

Under the cap, his eyes looked almost innocent. When he blinked, they shimmered like something sweet

and harmless.

But that expression didn’t make her feel safe at all.

After all, his tone sounded…

He sounded way too unstable.

Growing up in an orphanage, Maya was very good at pretending.

She tilted her head slightly, voice soft and confused.

“I don’t think I know you.”

“Mm-hm.” The boy nodded quickly, smiling like this was all a game.

“You don’t know me either, right?” Maya tried reasoning with him.

“Mm-hm mm-hm.” He nodded again, smile deepening, amber eyes sparkling.

Maya finally snapped. “Then why are you grabbing me?”

“I can’t grab you if I don’t know you?” He tilted his head. “You’re the most noticeable one here.”

The boy tilted his head. Under the brim of his cap, his eyes curved into crescents, and his ridiculous reason came out with absolute confidence.

Maya glanced around and froze for a second. She realized he was right.

She had been waiting outside the office with Jenny for too long, and Jenny had already been picked up by a driver. The school gate area was now nearly empty, so she was the only obvious target.

What kind of bad luck is this?

Maya started questioning reality.

He leaned closer again, relentless. “Guess who I am.

“If you don’t guess correctly, I’ll strangle you.”

Maya sighed.

Haha. Threatened again.

But since he insisted she guess…

“I know you,” Maya said, staring straight at him. “Your real identity is a homeless guy.”

“A h-homeless guy?” His smile froze. Even his crescent-shaped eyes widened slightly.

“Do I look like a homeless guy?” He looked down at his outfit.

“Yeah,” Maya clasped her hands together sincerely. “I feel like you’re about to join a gang of beggars any second now.”

She kept going without hesitation. “You’re probably hanging around Harmony so you can collect trash to

survive.

“Then, you’ll need to fight other beggars for territory, or maybe cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, that kind of thing.

“You want to work hard for a hundred days, so you can become the number one beggar king.”

She looked up with earnest eyes. “So tragic.”

She wasn’t completely joking.

He looked ordinary, but there was a faint scent of blood on him. It was not strong, just like something splattered accidentally during dirty work.

His cap was pulled low, hiding his hair. His whole presence felt deliberately low-profile, yet completely out of place.

And with his sudden appearance and strange behavior…

He looked like someone who had just finished a job and didn’t bother cleaning up properly. A runaway criminal type.

Calling him a homeless guy was almost an insult to homeless people.

“Little girl,” the boy muttered, genuinely questioning his life for a second.

Then he glanced at her mischievous expression again and suddenly laughed. His eyes curved gently. “Even if you’re cute,” he said softly, “that was still pretty mean.”
