Chapter 121 Followed

Watching Maya and Alfred walk side by side, Lawrence quietly clenched his hands into fists.

If he had to express this moment as an emotion, it wasn’t jealousy. More like envy.

Pure envy.

He wanted to attend school with her like this as well, like normal children.

He was Maya’s biological brother, and they should have been the closest people in the world. Yet now, he had to hide in a corner and quietly watch her from afar.

Before she died, his mother told him again and again, “You two will always be closest to each other. No one should matter more than you do to one another. Not your father, not even me.”

He had known that wasn’t exactly true.

However, back then, his mother had a look of grief and sorrow on her face as she hugged him, repeating those words in his ear.

Ultimately, those words were almost carved right into him.

Not Dad.

Not Mom.

Just her.

Just Maya.

Wendy stepped out of the store, holding bags of groceries, in a pretty decent mood.

It was only when she was grocery shopping that she would personally get the kids after school. However, something about today felt particularly strange.

On her way over, she felt as if she had eyes on her, and she couldn’t shake that feeling.

Could it be an enemy?

However, Wendy also knew that all her enemies had been taken care of years ago.

Puzzled, she pulled out a compact mirror from her bag, looking around with it.

Seeing that the person following her was just a child, Wendy wondered if she was starting to be overly paranoid.

Why would a child be following me?

The child didn’t seem like a young, trained assassin from any organization. The only reason he’d managed

to follow her for so long without being noticed was simply that he was young.

Most people wouldn’t pay any attention to a young child following after them.

Besides, along the way, there were also plenty of places he could duck behind to avoid being seen.

Wendy angled the mirror again, this time seeing the boy’s face clearly.

He was a good-looking kid.

Unfortunately, there were signs of an old injury.

A visible scar that was impossible to ignore cut across his face.

She tilted her head, a hint of confusion in her expression.

Seeing that the boy showed no sign of giving up, following her like a shadow, Wendy sighed. Without a change in expression, she maintained her pace, as if she didn’t know he was behind her.

However, the moment she turned the corner, she seemed to disappear, lost in the crowd of people.

I lost her?

Lawrence pursed his lips.

Just as he was about to give up and leave, she appeared right behind him.

Her delicate features looked completely harmless in the sunlight. Lawrence froze, unable to react in time, and Wendy said, “Hey, kid. Come over here.”

Her voice was gentle.

“It’s rude to stare at a lady like that, you know?”

All of a sudden, a chill shot through Lawrence.

No matter how innocent Wendy’s smile seemed, Lawrence didn’t think she was harmless.

She was way too strange.

Everything about her felt off.

She looked out of place with grocery bags in her hands. Instead, she looked like someone who should have a weapon instead.

Such as… a gun in one hand, and a blade in the other?

Lawrence was like Maya in this aspect; they were both intuitive.

Right now, Wendy gave him a bad feeling, especially when she smiled. He could see the malice behind her

smile.

Rather than a gentle greeting, it almost felt like a cat toying with a mouse.

Lawrence’s heart pounded wildly in his chest as his mind raced, wondering what he should do next

His expression was calm, but his eyes reddened instantly.

“Ma’am… I can’t find my way home… You looked like my mom…” he said, voice trembling on cue. Tears slipped down his cheeks with practiced precision, even though he felt no sadness.

He continued, “That’s why I was following you. I wasn’t trying to do anything bad.”

Baffled, Wendy looked back at him.

Really?

So I look like a gentle person?

It was easy to see right through Lawrence’s fake crying, and he’d just said whatever had come to his mind. However, seeing the obvious delight on Wendy’s face, his lips curled up slightly, and he relaxed.

She’s way too easy to fool.

“Kid, you look kind of familiar,” Wendy said, after a few seconds, interrupting Lawrence’s train of thought as well.

She tilted her head, studying him from head to toe before a thoughtful look flashed in her eyes.

Wendy didn’t really care for boys.

There were more than enough of them at home.

Raymond, Edric, George, Toby, Alfred.

There was a whole pack of them. Every time they had dinner during Thanksgiving, they’d surround her with noise until she had a headache.

She was sure there was something wrong with the Clarks’ genes.

Only her eldest, Edric, was normal.

She didn’t understand why the other three boys avoided him like the plague.

Even with George’s twisted personality, Alfred and Tony would still chat with him once in a while, even if they were constantly snapping at each other.
