Chapter 136 A Boy Who Looks Like Maya

Alfred said, “Pretty good.”

“Then help me look. See if there’s a boy here who looks like me,” Maya said.

“A boy who looks like you?” Alfred repeated, his tone a little odd, as if he was stressing the word boy.

To be honest, he really didn’t get it.

A boy who looks like Maya?

Why would she be looking for that?

And if she did find him, then what?

It was a strange question. But he didn’t ask more. He just quietly followed Maya, letting his eyes drift lazily over the crowd.

He wasn’t really searching at all.

He didn’t want to.

It was a subtle feeling, not something he could explain with logic. Just a feeling he couldn’t shake.

So Alfred tried to change the subject.

“Are you hungry?” he asked.

Maya was still looking around. “A little.”

She hadn’t really eaten dinner.

From trying on outfits to getting ready to leave, it had taken three or four hours. The only thing she had was a few cookies the stylist had handed her.

Now she did feel a little hungry.

At events like this, most of the food was just for show-pretty plating, tiny portions. Enough to taste, not enough to feel full. They were just enough to take the edge off.

Alfred’s sharp eyes landed on a long table nearby with a few small cakes.

Strawberry, chocolate, mango-each one only big enough for a couple of bites, topped with fresh fruit.

He walked over and picked up a plate covered in strawberry cakes.

He said, “Then let’s just eat them!”

His tone had a strange, overly cheerful energy-like someone trying a little too hard to sound human.

Everything about him-his movements, even the way he stood-felt carefully arranged, like it had been practiced. He even smiled.

Chapter 136 A Boy Who Looks Like Maya

Huh?

Maya finally shifted her attention back to Alfred, a little confused. “You want us to eat this cake?”

He nodded.

“Alright…” she said slowly. It was just cake. Why was he acting so excited about it? It’s not like we were starving.

Maya found it strange.

But she still took the cake and picked up a small fork.

Alfred bit the corner of his mouth slightly.

Was that wrong?

He secretly watched Maya’s expression.

He had read online that boys who smile a lot are more charming.

And that your tone should go up and down if you want people to like you.

He was already trying to smile. He was already trying to make his voice more lively.

So why did Maya look even more confused now?

Maya used the fork to eat the strawberry on top, then scooped up another bite of cake and put it in her mouth.

“I used to like sharing cake with people,” she said, almost casually, like it just came to her.

Alfred caught that word immediately.

Used to.

“Who?” he asked.

“A kid,” Maya said vaguely.

From what Alfred knew about her past, he could only guess that “the kid” was probably someone from the orphanage she grew up in.

One bite at a time, they finished the small cake. After that, Maya’s stomach finally didn’t feel empty anymore.

They leaned close together, heads almost touching, whispering quietly.

Sharing a cake like that, they looked close, as if they had known each other forever.

From the balcony of the banquet hall upstairs, Lawrence leaned lazily on the railing, looking down at them. For once, he actually seemed a little lost in thought.

He and Kaia, along with Maya, all had the same birthday.

But every year, the center of attention was always Kaia. Maya would hold his hand and walk him through the crowd.

Maya moved carefully, as if she were afraid of being noticed.

She slipped through the crowd with ease, took the most beautifully decorated cake from the top of the table, and then took him with her.

They found an empty guest room. Only after she shut the door tightly did she finally relax. She flopped onto the bed, looking completely drained.

She said, “Good thing nobody noticed. If they did, it would’ve been a problem.”

Lawrence couldn’t help complaining, “Why do we have to sneak around just to take a cake? It’s our birthday.”

He hated this place.

He hated everything about it.

Maya sat up. “I was thinking the same thing. But the people around Kaia look at me like they can’t stand me. They always come at me for no reason.”

“Don’t you think this world is kind of messed up?”

Did this world belong to Kaia?

If you weren’t her friend, or if you went against her, did you just have to die?

Lawrence said, furious, “It’s not just this world that’s messed up. Dad is messed up too. He could’ve just split

it into two parties, but instead, he made the three of us share one. It’s our birthday, too.”

In the end, the ones who had to sneak around were still just the two of them.

Where was the fairness in that?

Maya nodded hard. “Yeah. It’s all Lawrence’s fault. I used to actually look forward to birthdays.”

Now?

Not only did she not look forward to it, but just surviving the day without getting stepped on by Kaia’s fans already counted as lucky.

Lawrence wiped cream off his fork and muttered, “Why would you even look forward to it? Birthdays are boring anyway.”

Maya said, “Because before, I used to look forward to when the orphanage director would buy us cake. If she had a little extra money, she’d celebrate with us. Just a small piece, and we all shared it.”

She paused for a moment, then her lips curved up a little.
