Chapter 1
Chad Wellington’s new flame, Jessica Blake, was stunning, with a knockout figure. She fit his type perfectly.
At the elite Polo Club of Rolling Hills, Chad looked every bit the privileged heir in his tailored suit. Jessica had her arms around his neck as he leaned down with a lazy smile, indulging the kiss.
The other wives perked up at the sight of the photo. “Isn’t that Jessica Blake? The infamous social climber?”
“That one’s trouble.”
“All her exes are filthy rich. She plays for keeps.”
Samantha Cole, daughter of the Cole family, scoffed. “That wannabe once tried to get her claws into my brother
Benjamin. He wasn’t interested. He had her thrown out of his hotel suite.”
“She’s not just after a career boost, Olivia,” Mrs. Harrison warned with a smirk. “I’d watch my back if I were you.”
I just smiled and said nothing. Chad had a different girl in every zip code. I couldn’t keep up even if I tried.
After the gathering, I asked my driver to take Samantha home.
In the back of the Rolls-Royce, Samantha fumed. “Mrs. Harrison is just bitter her own niece couldn’t land Chad. She’s
been shoving those photos in your face for years. I’m glad you finally pushed back.”
Samantha and I had been friends for years. Sam was impulsive and wore her heart on her sleeve, never bothering to
hide how she felt. She’d long thought I deserved better.
“How have you put up with this for two years?” she demanded. “It makes me sick just watching. If it were me, I’d have filed for divorce eight times over. You know, I should just set you up with my brother. You could be my sister-in-law.”
Samantha had grown up pampered and adored. Her parents spoiled her, her brother protected her. She couldn’t
understand why I stayed in a marriage that was slowly wearing me down.
When she asked me what I was waiting for, my coffee had gone cold. I answered softly, “I’m waiting for the snow on
Eagle Peak to melt.”
Samantha blinked, then laughed. “Idiot. It never snows in Cherryhill.”
After dropping off Samantha, my car continued home. A few hundred yards from the house, the driver muttered, ‘I
think that’s Mr Wellington’s car,” before catching himself and clearing his throat awkwardly.
In the thick night, I saw Chad’s Maybach idling in the dark, the engine humming, the car subtly vibrating like a living
thing. I told my driver to stop and turn off the engine.
I waited in my car for a long time, until my fingers grew cold. Finally, the other car fell quiet.

I got out and walked over. The rear windows were fogged up. I raised my hand and knocked on the cool glass.
The window rolled down. Inside, they had just managed to compose themselves.
Chad didn’t look the least bit guilty. Time to get up, sweetheart,” he told the woman on his lap. completely unfazed. “My wife’s here.
