Chapter 6
Silence on the other end.
“You and Marcus?”
“Yeah.”
She didn’t ask if I was sure. Didn’t try to talk me out of it.
Just said: “Get to my office. Now.”
The lawyer’s name was Sarah Mitchell.
Met her back when I was grinding through my CPA exam-same brutal prep course, bonded over energy drinks and existential dread.
I walked into her office and dumped everything on her desk.
Group chat screenshots. Over three hundred.
Bank statements. Eight years of financial suicide.
Two Excel spreadsheets that made me sick just looking at them.
She spent twenty minutes going through it all.
Her expression went from confused to horrified to pissed.
Finally she threw down the papers and looked at me like I’d lost my mind.
“Mia. Are you fucking kidding me right now?”
“Wish I was.”
“How are you not in jail for arson?”
I laughed-sharp, bitter. “Didn’t know there was anything to burn until last week.”
She just shook her head.
“Okay. Walk me through the house. Your parents paid the down payment?”

“Yep. Wired it straight to me. I’ve got proof.”
“And the mortgage?”
“Me. Every month. He’s never paid a cent.”
“Who’s on the deed?”
“Both our names.”
“What about the place he bought his girlfriend?”
Hearing someone else say “girlfriend” out loud made my stomach flip.
“His name only. But the money? All from our ‘joint account.” I did the angriest air quotes of my life. “The account I was the only one actually putting money into. For years.”
Sarah grabbed her pen like she wanted to stab someone.
“That condo’s our ace. If we can prove every dollar came from you—”
“He bought it for her. Not me.”
“Doesn’t matter. It’s a marital asset bought with marital money. She can live there and play wifey all she wants-doesn’t change the fact that you paid for it.”
She sketched out a battle plan and pushed it toward me.
I read it.
First time in days I didn’t feel like I was drowning.
“How long?”
“You’ve documented everything like the CPA you are. If he settles quietly, maybe four weeks. If he wants to fight, we
take him to court.”
“He’ll fight.”
“Perfect. Let him try. Those group chats are gonna wreck him in front of a judge.”
I stuffed everything back in my bag.
Left her office at 4 PM. Sunshine felt too bright, too normal.

Chapter 6
Stood at a red light.
My phone buzzed.
Marcus: “Want me to grab dinner on the way home?”
I typed back on autopilot.
“Whatever’s fine.”
Same response I’d given him a million times.
Except now I knew he was probably texting Lily the exact same thing.
Got home.
He’d picked up a rotisserie chicken and some sad-looking potato salad.
We sat at the table. Both on our phones. Zero conversation.
Just like every other night.
I cleared the plates after. He went outside to smoke.
Heard him on the phone through the window. Voice quiet. Sneaky.
Couldn’t hear the words.
Didn’t matter anymore.
I knew everything I needed to know.
I’m done listening.
Time to blow up his whole world.
