“I had a little accident while horseback riding yesterday,” Elnora said. “I’m really okay. It’s nothing serious.”

Elnora jumped in to answer Reese before Albert could say anything.

Reese shot Albert a stern look, then turned to the maid nearby.

“Take Mrs. Campbell upstairs to change her clothes,” she instructed.

The maid nodded in response.

“Mrs. Campbell, please come with me,” the maid said.

Seeing that Reese clearly wanted to talk to Albert, Elnora didn’t object. She got up from her seat and headed upstairs.

The maid picked out a fresh outfit for Elnora and set it out on the hanger.

Once she had changed into the new clothes, Elnora made her way downstairs.

Albert was still sitting where he’d been before, looking pretty defeated. Clearly, Reese had just lectured

him.

Reese’s expression was still a bit sour, but when she saw Elnora come downstairs, she forced a smile and said, “I’ll have Albert take you to the hospital in a bit.

“You’ve never been in great health, so even a small injury needs extra attention.”

Elnora thought about refusing, but with Reese saying all that, if she turned her down now, it’d be like disrespecting Reese in front of everyone.

Elnora could only nod quietly, accepting it without protest.

“Okay, Mom,” she said.

Reese gave a satisfied nod at Elnora’s reply.

The kitchen started serving up the food, setting the table with dish after dish.

Throughout the meal, Albert didn’t say a single word.

The only voices heard at the table were Reese’s and Elnora’s.

After everyone finished eating, Reese took Elnora by the hand and led her over to the couch.

“Tomorrow is Albert’s high school teacher Ms. Fuller’s seventieth birthday,” Reese said. “Our families have stayed connected over the years.

“You and Albert should head over early tomorrow and bring a gift to Ms. Fuller, pay your respects.

“Ms. Fuller was hospitalized when you and Albert got married, so she missed your wedding, which she’s always regretted. When we spoke earlier today, she mentioned you, Elnora. Tomorrow, you should accompany Albert to visit her.”

Elnora rarely said no to Reese’s requests, so she agreed.

Seeing her agree, Reese smiled and signaled for the gift box to be brought over.

Reese said, “I need to travel overseas tomorrow.

“I picked out this gift especially for Ms. Fuller, according to what she likes. Just take it with you tomorrow. No need to stress about finding something yourself.”

Elnora reached out and took the gift box from Reese.

“Okay,” she replied.

Reese had everything covered, so Elnora didn’t have to worry about a thing.

Reese was still concerned about Elnora’s injury, so she didn’t linger in conversation.

After a few brief instructions, she asked Albert to take Elnora to the hospital for a check-up.

On the way back, Elnora set the gift box down between herself and Albert.

The driver started the car and pulled away from the Campbell family.

Albert said coolly, “To the hospital.”

The driver answered right away, “Right away, Mr. Campbell.”

Elnora spoke up quickly, “There’s really no need to go to the hospital. It’s nothing serious.

“Just a couple of bruises and some scrapes. I’ve got medicine at home, so there’s no need to bother with a hospital visit.”

The driver hesitated, glancing over at Albert for guidance.

Albert spoke with determination, his tone serious. “Mom was just nagging me nonstop about taking you to the hospital. If I don’t, she’ll definitely give me a hard time.”

Thinking back to the look on Albert’s face when she came downstairs, Elnora fell silent for a moment before saying, “Sorry about that. I really didn’t mean for you to get an earful from your mom because of

me.”

Albert gave a little huff and said, “If you really didn’t mean to get me in trouble, then just be good and come with me to the hospital for the check-up. Otherwise, Mom’s never going to let me hear the end of it.”

Elnora kept quiet.

The driver took the hint and headed straight for the hospital.

After they arrived at the hospital, Elnora cooperated fully with the doctor’s examination.

Albert’s brows furrowed instinctively when he saw Elnora’s injuries again.

“You’re really something, Ms. Finley. Tough as nails,” Albert remarked.

Back then, she didn’t even let out a peep-not even a groan, despite everything.

Elnora didn’t say anything back to Albert. She just sat there quietly, listening to the doctor’s advice.

The doctor wrote her a prescription for some meds.*

The driver headed straight to the pharmacy to pick them up.

Once they were back in the car, the driver handed the meds to Elnora.

Albert reached out and took the medicine from the driver, his voice low and serious as he said to Elnora, “I’ll take care of your wounds when we get home.”*

“No need,” she said coolly.

Elnora refused, her tone unwavering.

Albert’s voice was cold. “Mom insisted.”

Elnora replied, “I’m not going to tell your mom about this.”

Albert shrugged, “Who can say? If you end up making me look bad in front of her, I’ll never be able to clear my name.”

Elnora just gave him a look. “I’m not that bored.”

Albert replied, “I don’t want to get chewed out again, either.”

Elnora fell completely silent after that.

She didn’t initiate any conversation with Albert all the way back to Southview Residence.

As soon as they got out of the car, Elnora headed straight inside and went upstairs.

Albert trailed behind her, watching her head upstairs. A smirk tugged at his lips as he called out, “Make sure you’re all cleaned up and waiting for me.”

Elnora paused mid-step, then turned to give Albert a look.

Albert was still grinning, eyes fixed on her with that teasing smile. “So I can come take care of your

wounds.”

Elnora didn’t say a word. She just kept going upstairs.

Albert watched her go, his grin widening.

He headed upstairs to his own room to freshen up.

After his shower, he stood in front of the mirror, adjusting his bathrobe.

He started by unbuttoning it, showing off his toned physique.

But then he felt like he was trying too hard, so he buttoned it back up.

After making sure he looked just right, Albert eventually walked over to Elnora’s bedroom door and knocked.

After a long moment, Elnora came over and opened the door for him.

Fresh out of the shower, she wasn’t wearing the silky nightgown from the last time Albert saw her. Instead, she had on a much more conservative pajama set.

The pajamas were decorated with little strawberry patterns.

Albert couldn’t help but arch an eyebrow at her getup.

Honestly, those strawberry pajamas were a world apart from her usual image.

“Wow, never pegged you as a strawberry fan,” Albert teased.

Elnora lowered her gaze, taking a look at her strawberry pajamas without saying a word.

They were a gift from Marina.

Ever since Marina got pregnant, she’d been obsessed with adorable prints like these.

Elnora usually liked to sleep in nightgowns.

But tonight, since Albert was coming over to treat her wounds, she went with the more conservative pajama set.

Without replying to Albert, she simply turned around and walked into the room, leaving the door open for him to come in.

Elnora walked over and sat down at her vanity, pulled up her pant leg, and waited for Albert to treat her injury.

She kept a blank face the whole time, barely showing any emotion.

For some reason, Albert couldn’t help but feel like the whole thing was just mechanical, almost like a routine.
