Chapter 8
Alistair had his memory back.
This time was different. In my last life, he blamed me for Serena’s car accident.
This time, he just gave a soft laugh and asked, “What exactly does your car accident
have to do with going to see her?”
Exactly. So he knew it too.
What did Serena’s accident have to do with me?
And yet in my previous life, he had insisted on pinning the death of his child on me.
An accident like that–someone had to pay for it. Someone always had to pay.
In that life, it was me.
This time, with Alistair involved in the accident, the Sterlings tracked down the driver
quickly.
But the driver shouted loudly in protest, “She threw herself in front of my car- deliberately! I wasn’t even going that fast…”
Sophie came to me after digging into the situation. As she spoke, her voice trailed off.
She studied my face, choosing her words with care.
“Honestly… I didn’t expect this. So Alistair never actually lost his memory after falling
into the sea.”
“He only did later, when he tried to save her and got hit in the head.”
“And she pretended to be the one who saved him- played him completely. That’s how you two missed each other…”
I could hear the caution in her tone.
She’d seen it, after all–what it had done to me.

During the time after Alistair fell into the sea, I would often wake up in the middle of the night crying, unable to sleep for the rest of it.
I lost weight fast.
I searched for him everywhere. I believed he was still alive. That belief was the only
thing keeping me going.
Then I discovered he was, in fact, alive. Only to learn that he had fallen in love with
someone else.
And now I found out it had all been a lie.
Sophie said bitterly, “Serena is absolutely despicable!”
My hand paused slightly over the documents.
I let out a soft laugh. “She is.”
But Alistair was even worse.
In my previous life, after he regained his memory, he still chose Serena.
When I couldn’t take it anymore, I asked him more than once, “If it weren’t for the Harrington family…”
“And if I hadn’t held onto that engagement, do you think you’d even have anywhere to
come back to?”
“And your leg. I went to great lengths to find doctors to treat you.”
“Alistair, if I hadn’t gone to find you back then, would you have even made it back at
all?”
My voice had been hoarse by the end.
But he just looked at me, cold as ever, and let out a mocking laugh.
“So this is you now, cashing in on favors done?”
“The engagement you think you were protecting was nothing more than an obstacle

between me and Serena.”
He said that even without me, he would have come back and taken control of Sterling Group all the same.
Serena’s deception didn’t matter. In fact, it later became a special memory between
them.
But by then, he was already standing at the top, admired by everyone, full of power and
confidence.
No one knew what the outcome would have been if I hadn’t gone to bring him back.
Just as now–Sophie had no idea what Alistair would have become on that other path.
She went on venting, saying Serena seemed to have lost her mind.
She kept repeating, over and over, “It wasn’t supposed to be like this…”
She had even cried and begged Alistair for forgiveness, telling him she truly loved him.
Sophie looked completely incredulous as she listed it out one by one.
“Is that even love?”
“She cost him his health. His position as heir. The grandfather who adored him.”
“And his childhood sweetheart… his fiancée…”
“How could Alistair possibly forgive her?”
I closed the file and gave a faint, indifferent smile.
