Chapter 1
On my birthday, my husband said he had a big surprise waiting for me at his office. I showed up to an empty building and a note-
[Your birthday gift? Cleaning this whole place! Surprise! You’re always playing trophy wife at home–time for something new! And thank Tessa for this brilliant idea~]
I was fuming. I called him immediately, but his secretary Tessa picked up instead.
She was at some fancy hotel by the Eiffel Tower, swirling a glass of wine.
“Oops, it’s you–Oh, and make sure you get my desk spotless, okay?”
“And what if I don’t?!”
Tessa let out a cold laugh and hung up.
Seconds later, the office door locked. My phone signal–gone.
Staring at the dark, empty building, my heart went ice–cold.
Fine.
If he can jet off on vacation with his secretary and leave his wife to scrub floors?
Then don’t blame me for cleaning up a little TOO WELL.
Oops–might even sweep away that CEO title while I’m at it!
Seeing them on that screen, looking so damn pleased with themselves, made my blood boil.
“This is your idea of a surprise, Callum? You turn me into the janitor while you take your secretary on vacation?”
Callum shrugged:
“You’re a housewife. Cleaning is what you do. Weren’t you the one always complaining I don’t value what you bring to the table?”
“Well, now I’m letting you do what you’re good at. Isn’t this the ‘personal value‘ you kept whining about?”
“Ten floors, Maisie. Every corner. Spotless. Go ahead–show me what you’re worth.”
So that was it.
A few weeks back, I’d told him I wanted to go back to work, have something of my own.
He’d shut me down hard, saying a housewife like me had no business looking for a job–that I should stick to cooking and cleaning.
I didn’t back down. We had a massive fight.
Eventually he said he’d “think about it” after the holiday.
Yesterday he acted all secretive, saying he’d left a “special gift” at the office and I should come get it.
I thought it was weird–he usually hates me coming to his office. Never imagined this was what he had waiting.
I ignored him and bolted for the door, punching in the code over and over.
Nothing. The system didn’t even blink.
