Chapter 3
I woke up the next morning to find the bed empty. Again.
I pulled open the closet and started sorting through everything Harrison had bought me over the years: bags, jewelry, designer clothes. If I sold enough of it, maybe I could pay back at least a little of what I owed him. Maybe he would resent me a little less.
Then the comments flared to life, and my hands stopped.
[THEY MET. the way they looked at each other?? instant chemistry, the old flame is SO not dead. this is the content i signed up for]
My jaw clenched. So what? Harrison called me baby too. That had to count for
something.
[are they talking about Belmont yet?? i am literally vibrating i need them together
RIGHT NOW]
[when is he filing for divorce though. asking for everyone]
My blood ran cold. If Harrison was the male lead, then the story ended with him and
her. Not with him and me.
And if I sold everything now to save him some money, that just meant there would be
more left for her later.
A switch flipped inside me. I went right back to taking inventory, except now I wasn’t
selling to pay him back. I was keeping every last thing.
I had not worked a single day since we got married, but Harrison had put plenty of
assets in my name over the years. Enough to matter.
If it came to a divorce, I would not walk away with nothing. I could survive on this.
My phone buzzed while I was in the middle of taking inventory. I picked up without
thinking. Harrison’s low voice came through the speaker.
“How come my baby hasn’t called Daddy today?”

“Still mad at me? What if Daddy brings you something nice when he comes home?”
Heat rushed up my neck. Out of habit, I almost snapped at him with some bratty
complaint about how long he had been gone.
[wait why is the ML calling his WIFE right now?? sir, you are supposed to be
reconnecting with your soulmate]
[it is probably just a check-in so she does not blow up his phone. you KNOW she sends
like a million texts a day. he is just managing her]
[actually it IS weird that she hasn’t texted at all today. she is definitely planning something]
Planning something? I was not planning anything. I was never planning anything
again.
And what did they mean, blowing up his phone? I texted him when I woke up. Then a
few more times after that. And maybe I called a couple dozen times. A few hundred
messages, tops.
That was not a lot.
Was it?
Okay. Maybe it was a lot.
No wonder he looked at his phone like it had personally wronged him.
I swallowed hard and put the phone back to my ear.
“I won’t call or text you anymore. And don’t bring me anything. Your work is more
important.”
There was silence on the other end. Then, low and careful,
“Baby…”
He trailed off as if he was trying to choose his words.
Then a soft, feminine voice drifted through in the background.

“Harrison, who are you on the phone with?”
My thumb hit End before my brain could catch up.
In all our years together, I had never once heard another woman’s voice through his phone.
