Chapter 19
Instead, she seems more eager than ever to turn my entire pack upside down. I’m becoming certain that she won’t be satisfied until she completely ruins me.
That can’t be true, my wolf offers his two cents. She’s our mate – her wolf is special. She wouldn’t just want to ruin us. There must be more to the story.
I shake my head, dismissing his words. My wolf is perhaps a hopeless romantic, blind to Evelyn’s capabilities as he only longs for the good.
She’s a weak wolf, nothing more, I remind him. She’s probably just high on power now that she’s away from her father. She always shrank in front of him.
It was as though she’s a whole other person. When Evelyn was in front of her father, she was obedient, making herself as small as possible. It was the complete opposite to how she is here.
Didn’t you notice how she shrank when I mentioned her father? I ask my wolf.
Yes, but that’s what I mean. There has to be something going on! He insists.
Still, I brush him away.
She’s nothing more than a scared wolf, I state. After all, the way she always obeyed her father was what made me look down on her in the first place.
Evelyn’s POV
It’s finally here. The day I’ve been dreading from the moment it was announced.
My Luna ceremony.
However, as I wake that morning and start the necessary preparations, I make sure I’m on my best behavior. All the maids seem to be holding their breath as they help me get ready, clearly confused as to why I’m being so cooperative. Still, I’m a picture of ease as they prim and prep me.
Finally ready, I am escorted to the pack house’s ballroom, discovering that all the other guests have already arrived. Including a media team that Kane’s mother animatedly chats with, clearly trying to put a positive spin on Kane and I’s marriage. I have to resist the urge to roll my eyes.
As I officially make my way across the room, I can feel dozens of eyes on me, hear the way people gasp as they take in my dress. Truthfully, I don’t blame them. My dress is truly breathtaking, a spitting image of what I’d asked for.
The top of my gown hugs me perfectly as the bodice melts into my curves, lifting my breasts nicely. It then expands out at my hips, the skirts of my dress puffing and flowing beautifully behind me. Just as I’d requested the colors seem to shift and move with each of my steps, sparkling as it’s decorated in countless crystals.
However, the dress in whole is a stunning green. A familiar green. One that appears to match the color of Kane’s eyes.
I hate how well it suits me. Like the color was made for me.
Still, I try to put that out of my mind as I take in the room, recognizing the faces of some of my own pack members. However, my heart catches as a specific one approaches me, one that instinctively makes me want to shrink backward.
“Father,” I rasp out, somehow standing firm.
Even before he reaches me, a disgusted sneer is upon his face. He’s accompanied by my stepmother who shares his disdain as they both stop before me. Immediately, my father’s eyes drop down to my stomach.
“Still not pregnant,” he scolds, wrinkling his nose. “I knew you couldn’t handle your mate. Once again, you’ve proven yourself to be a useless failure.”

Not even a “hello.” Not a “you look beautiful.” Insults are always just ready on his tongue.
“It’s exactly what we expected,” my stepmother chimes in. “She’s a weak wolf. It’s no wonder Kane doesn’t care for her.”
I can’t help myself. Quickly, anger flushes through me as I grip my hands tightly into my skirts.
“I don’t care to meet your expectations,” I fire at her. “Why would I care to impress you? You’re just a mistress who ruined someone else’s marriage.”
