Chapter 20
Chapter 20
Evelyn’s POV
+25 Bonus
It’s clear my comment hit its mark as both my father and stepmother stare at me in shocked silence. They hadn’t expected their usually timid and submissive Evelyn to ever speak up for herself.
Finally gathering their wits, my father begins to sputter as his face grows increasingly redder and redder.
“How dare you speak to her that way!” he scolds as my stepmother begins to practically seize with anger. “You better mind what you say or else -”
“Or else what?” a deep voice interjects as Kane appears at my side.
As my father and stepmother take him in, horror falls over both of their faces. Within milliseconds they completely change their tune, jumping right into their act.
“Oh, we were just telling Evelyn how we long for our first grandchild!” my father insists, placing his hand on my shoulder and giving me a surprisingly gentle squeeze.
“Y-yes!” my stepmother joins in, linking her arm through mine. “Between both of your beauty and intelligence, we know the child will take the world by storm!”
Kane hums at this, smirking mainly to himself as he regards both of them – of how they touch me. He clearly doesn’t buy the whole “big happy family” charade they’re pulling. However, he chooses not to say anything.
“If our child is half as beautiful as Evelyn then I am truly a blessed man,” he tells them, retrieving me from their clutches so he can wrap his own arm around my waist. I blink up at him, thrown to see the admiration in his eyes.
“W-why yes,” my father tries, just as shocked as I am. “I’ve always said my daughter’s beauty and grace are unmatched.”
It takes everything in me not to laugh at my father’s words. It’s the biggest lie I’ve ever heard. If only I could rattle off every insult he’s ever thrown at me as he never once complimented my looks.
However, Kane is already turning me away, taking with him as he guides us away from my father.
“If you’ll excuse us,” he insists, leaving them with no choice but to nod in acceptance. I’m dumbfounded as Kane and I glide across the ballroom together, his arm still wrapped around my waist.
“What was that?” I hiss at him once I’ve regained use of my tongue.
Why the hell had he been willing to come save me? I would have expected Kane to stand back and happily watch the scene, relishing in how my father talked down to me.
But instead, he’d practically protected me from them, spewing lies of how beautiful I am.
“You really laid it on thick, didn’t you?” I ask, my brows pulling together.
“Did I?” he asks coyly, toying with me as he smiles to himself once more. I have half a thought to pinch the skin of the hand he still has resting on my hip. However, he continues before I can try.
“I was just coming to retrieve you so you can make your grand debut,” he informs me.
“Meaning?” I ask.
He turns to me, his smile growing so a dimple appears in his left cheek. I’d never noticed it before and my breath staggers as I study the indent.
“It’s time to meet the press,” he states.
I choke out a sound, tensing as I want to wiggle away from him. But I’m too late.

Kane led me right into the trap, brought me right into the perfect position without my realizing. Flashes begin to go off in my face, multiple voices calling out my name. I can hear Kane chuckle in my ear just as he takes a step away, causing frustration to dizzy my head.
Damn him.
He distracted me, brought me right to the lion’s den.
“Evelyn, what do you have to say to those who think you’re just feeding off of Kane?” one reporter shouts.
“Everyone believes that you’re unworthy of Kane,” another reporter chimes in. “Do you have anything to comment?”
“Are there any feelings between you two?” someone else calls out. “Or is this nothing more than a political marriage?”
The flashes have died down now, allowing me to gather some of my thoughts as all of their questions continue to swirl around me. I do my best to take a deep breath, telling myself that I couldn’t let Kane get the upperhand now.
Squaring my shoulders, I keep my expression smooth as I address all of the awaiting reporters.
“I can’t speak for Kane,” I begin openly. “But I have no interest in him. We were merely forced together by obligation.”
Immediately following my words, Kane steps back up to my side, putting on an award-winning smile as he laughs.
“That’s my wife,” he jokes, his charm easily making the reporters laugh along with him. He turns his attention to me then, still smiling though the words that fill my head are not as sweet.
