Evie’s pov

The raging in my heart beats loudly and instantly it feels like the blood from my body has drained the second his eyes pin me down He was Ryan’s dad right hand man and he was not in his wolt form.

“Javon,” I gasped, scrambling to my feet as my heart races. He had not said a word when I slammed into him, not said a word while I scramble to my teet either. Just stared at me with that look of indifference.

“1-

I swallowed my words. What am I to tell him? That I was escaping this hell hole? I couldn’t exactly tell him that or I would get punished. Severely.

I looked to my left sharply when I hear the sound of paws hitting the earth getting closer. The rest have joined us. My stomach twists with nerves.

I swallowed.

Did they tell Ryan?

Would he be mad? Would he even care?

My face flushes with embarrassment and nervousness. “Javon I-

“You have a head start,” he utters coldly just as the other four wolves that were chasing me down reach behind him. Their heads were lowered as if they had caught their prey, teeth glistening as they snarl into the night.

My little body trembles with fear.

My eyes flicker off them to stare at Javon whose eyes held no emotion. How can a person be this emotionless?

“What?” I whisper, unsure if to even speak up or not. He didn’t look very welcoming.

He towered over me a good few inches that made me have to crane my neck to look up at him. Something flashes in his eyes then. That fog that lets me know he was communicating with someone.

I stiffen. Was it Ryan? Was he coming here? Am I in big trouble?

The fog disappears and his eyes narrow down on me. “You have a head-start wolf less runt. Ryan ordered me to kill you.”

My heart stutters. Shatters and bleeds.

Ryan…..

Tears blurred my vision. As if rejecting me wasn’t enough…..now he wants me dead. Did he really not care about me at all anymore? Did he even ever?

I stumble back by Javon’s words, my eyes flickering briefly tot the other wolves that were still snarling. Saliva dripped out their mouths as though they were starving.

I bet they were starving for my blood.

“Rya-

The words could barely come out my mouth as my throat closes up. My fingers tremble as I grip the bag strap and look at Javon helplessly.

He returns the look with a cold one which isn’t surprising. “You’re wasting time runt. It would be wise to,” he lowered his head a little as if he was trying to mock me and I believe he was. And then, the corner of his lip tilt up in a smirk that made a shard of glass aim straight to my heart.

“Run,” his eyes glint with that sadistic gleam that would make anyone cower in fear.

And that it did. My body reacts before my mind even could and I spin on my heels, bolting into the woods. Terror rips through my chest, paining me brutally but I can’t stop, not even to take a good inhale in.

I run, ignoring the way the beaches tear at my skin or the way the bag on my back feels heavier. As I move deeper into the forest, I can’t help but let the tears flow freely.

What would be the point of holding them back? It’s not like they would move any of the wolves that are hunting me down.

Ryan ordered my death.

My heart squeezes painfully.

The thought echoes in my head many times, with each time crushing my chest.

Ryan, my best friend, my ex mate, ordered my death.

For years I’ve always been unloved, uncared for but he showed me the opposite. After all what my family did to me, how the pack treated me, I never dared to wish for death……..because he was worth living for. 1

But now.

He was the one who ordered my death.

And perhaps that should’ve made me succumb to my doom because what I wanted to live for….didn’t want me. However a fire flicker low in my stomach and heart. A fire to live.

To not give any one of them the satisfaction of me dying.

I just wanted to live. Not for him. But for myself.

So as pain blooms inside my chest my legs move me through the woods. I don’t dare look back. I don’t dare slow down. And then I hear them. The thundering of their paws on the earth as they begin to chase me.

Growls slice through the air harshly as the wolves fan out. They were smart and very coordinated, cutting off paths before I can even take them. I’m their prey. And they’re the hunters. And they’re hunting me down.

My lungs burn and my vision blurs but I force myself to run. I weave through trees, ducked under branches and stumble over exposed roots. But the last root doomed me and I am sent on the forest ground. Hard.

Pain flares through my body, especially my face but I scramble to my feet. A second longer and my head would’ve been scarfed down. Hot breath brushes my calves and my heart skips.

They were close and if they wanted they could take me out. But they were playing with me. Playing with their meal.

They’ve been doing it for what I presume was hours.

Tears run down my cheeks blinding me for a second and I reach up to brush them away quickly. My bag drags me down, heavy and now useless to me. With a sob, I yank it off my shoulder and let it fall to the ground.

I don’t need it.

I just need to survive.

I’m not sure how long I’ve been running for but my legs and lungs burn. Must be a a good couple of hours to have me so dizzy

But even so, I force my legs to keep going as I run up an incline hill. I throw everything I had into my legs, every strength, every desperation to escape and be free.

But the ground slopes downward and I end up losing my footing. I cried out as I tumble down, my skin tearing as sharp stones slice against me as I roll.

I slam into the dirt at the bottom, the air knocking out of my lungs. Pain explodes through my side and I can’t even seem to get air into my lungs. I can’t breathe. I wheeze.

I clutch my side as spots dance around in my vision, while I gasp for air. Paws hit the ground before me and even though pain shoots through every limb of my body, I force myself up.

I stagger, half dragging my body forward. Pain shoots through my ribs and I cry, my legs trembling as it threaten to give out.

My heart hammers behind my ribcage knowing that this was it. I wouldn’t be able to outrun them now and I’m sure they’d grow bored of chasing me about and just get on with the killing.

I fall to my knees, the snarls growing louder as they draw closer. My heart weighs heavy in my chest as I close my eyes and lift my head to the sky, praying that they’d at least make it quick.

But then a loud voice booms through the air. “Enough!”

My entire body shakes as I clutch the dirt and open my eyes. The voice belonged to Javon but I was too scared to look behind me.

The growling behind me eased a bit but they’re still low. “You seem to have crossed the border runt,” he said calmly, too calmly. “Which means you’re no longer pack property.”

My heart skips and this time I do use any bit of strength I had to whip around to look at him. The wolves are behind him as his emotionless eyes lock down on me. “You’ve managed to escape,” he tilt his head, studying me before looking at the wolves.” No one follow her. We are not to step out of our territory.”

He then turns around, giving me to look at his tensed back as he says over his shoulder coldly. “Step foot back into our territory and we shall not spare your life. Now,” he looks over his shoulder one last time to watch my miserable broken body and utters.” Run.”
