Chapter 26 The Fake Exorcist

As Donna spoke, her voice wavered, and she burst into tears. “Brielle, I swear I didn’t take anything.”

That pitiful whimper tugged at Vincent’s heartstrings. He instantly snapped at Brielle, “How many times do I have to repeat myself? Your mother’s belongings were buried with her! There’s no keepsake!”

Vincent’s heart was pounding. Her mother had passed away at a young age, and after Brielle’s serious illness, she had little recollection of the past. For years, she had never once inquired about her mother’s things. Why was she suddenly so determined to get a keepsake

Was she possessed by some evil spirit? Or was her mother’s ghost truly haunting the estate?

Brielle balled her fists. So her father would rather go to great lengths than admit the existence of the keepsake.

His stubbornness only made the whole thing more suspicious.

“Fine. I’ll find it myself,” Brielle declared and turned to leave.

Vincent immediately roared, “Guards! Take Brielle back to her chamber!”

Several guards rushed forward and grabbed Brielle by the arms. She struggled vigorously. “I can leave on my own!”

But the guards still forced her back to her chamber and locked the door from the outside.

Brielle kicked the door in a fit of rage. Vincent was clearly evading any topic related to her mother. What on earth had happened back then? Was Vincent hiding something?

“Lady Brielle, why are they locking you up?” Violet had gone to the trouble of getting some food, but now the door was locked.

“I’m okay. Don’t worry,” Brielle said weakly as she sat down on a stool. She was pondering how to conduct the next investigation.

In the silence, her stomach rumbled loudly from hunger. But the windows and doors were all locked. Violet couldn’t get the food to her. Brielle had no choice but to endure the hunger. She simply lay down on the bed to sleep. If she was asleep, she wouldn’t feel the hunger.

The next morning, before Brielle even woke up, she heard the sound of the lock being unlocked. She opened her eyes groggily and saw a man in a yellow rob enter, carrying a wooden staff and ringing a small bell while mumbling something under his breath.

Brielle sat up and frowned. An exorcist?

“There’s definitely some dark energy around this place, the exorcist said seriously as he scanned the room. Then his eyes landed on Brielle. “The dark energy is concentrated on this woman.”

Vincent walked into the room right after him and bowed slightly towards the exorcist. “You’re right. This is my daughter. Lately, she’s been acting strangely-as if she might be possessed. If some unclean spirit has attached itself to her, I hope you can help.”

Brielle couldn’t help but laugh when she heard that. Undean spirit? Possessed?

“Don’t mention it, my lord. It’s my duty as a holy man. Il set up an altar, perform the rituals, and drive away the evil spirits to cure your daughter and restore peace to your estate.”

She sized up the exorcist. Under his robe, he wore expensive boots with golden embroidery. She looked into his eyes-they were shifty and untrustworthy. He had the look of a greedy swindler. And there was a dark cloud between his brows, mixed with streaks of red. This guy had pulled so many scams that his bad luck was catching up with him. He couldn’t even save himself, and he was going to exorcise her?

“So what needs to be prepared? How long will it take? It has to be quick!” Vincent’s expression was grave. He really believed every word.

The exorcist stroked his beard and thought for a moment. “If we rush, it’ll take a full day. I can have my apprentice prepare the items, but the materials will cost a fair amount of money.”

Hearing that, Vincent immediately pulled two banknotes from his pocket and handed them to the exorcist. “Is this enough to buy the materials? There will be a generous reward after it’s done!”

The exorcist’s eyes lit up when he saw the two-hundred-silver-coin notes. He nodded right away. “Yes, no problem! I’ll start setting up the altar right now. Everyone who’s not involved should leave this courtyard first.”

“Fine,” Vincent said and turned to leave. But then he stopped and hesitated, looking at Brielle.

A moment later, he ordered someone to bring ropes into the room and tie Brielle up. He said it was to prevent her from struggling and ruining the exorcist’s work.

Brielle hadn’t eaten all day. She was weak from the effects of some unknown toxin and had no strength to fight back. The ropes were tied tightly around her.

Brielle gave Vincent a cold laugh. “Anyone watching would think you were getting ready to sacrifice your daughter to the gods.”

Vincent’s face darkened with anger. “Look at you, talking like a crazy woman!”

Then he turned to the exorcist. “I’ll leave my daughter’s possession in your hands.”

“Don’t worry.”

After Vincent left, Violet, who had been blocked outside the courtyard, shouted loudly, “Mr. Whitmore, this is Lady Brielle! How can you treat her like this?”

Vincent’s voice was cold and sharp. “Lord Daniel approved this. I promised Lord Daniel I would give him back a normal Brielle. If any of you servants dare spread rumors about what happens today, I don’t care which household you work for-you’ll each get fifty lashes on the back.”

Violet shut her mouth, feeling wronged. She looked at the sealed-off courtyard and cried, helpless and desperate.

Daniel hated Brielle. Her family home, which should have been a haven for her, was instead just another place of misery.
