Chapter 9: Second Chance Mate
Jaxon POV
When Drax said ‘Mate’ in my head, I couldn’t believe it. Her scent hit me before I even saw her. She smelled of spiced cranberries and cinnamon, and it made my mouth water. It reminds me of Thanksgiving and the heartiness of being home.
I was busy fighting Dark Flame warriors. I already had two of them on me and one was using a silver knife. What I didn’t know was my mate was watching my back. She pushed another warrior out of the way but, because I didn’t recognize her immediately as my mate, but a Dark Flame warrior, I pierced her with the silver knife.
Once I realized it was her, the shock struck me hard. Then she collapsed. FUCK! NO. NO. NO. I may not want another mate, but I wouldn’t kill her either. I would reject her.
“SABLE! NOOO!” I hear someone scream behind me and when I turn, it looks like the Alpha for Dark Flame. Fuck. Is she his chosen mate? Figures. Another power-driven she-wolf. I am getting ready to charge towards him and fight him, but it looks like the Beta holds him and yells out a howl of retreat.
“Alpha, she’s gone. We have no chance of winning this battle without her now.” I hear him yell at Alpha Darius as he drags him away. They didn’t even check to make sure she was dead. I still feel the bond in place. Just weak.
They can’t win without her? They need a woman to win? I look over at my mate and wonder what’s so special about her. I tell my warriors to follow them and make sure they get off our pack lands. Then I mind link the pack hospital and Matt.
‘I need personnel ready at the pack hospital. I’m bringing in a woman from Dark Flame. She needs
medical attention. She is not to be harmed or mistreated. Understood?’ 1
‘Yes, Alpha.’
Then I close the connection and mind link Matt, ‘Matt, you are not going to believe this,’ I call out.
‘What?’
‘Meet me at the pack hospital. I’ll explain there and show you.’ I say and close the mind link.
I scoop up my mate. Sable, huh? She’s pretty. Wavy brown hair and before she collapsed, I saw her eyes. They were a beautiful hazel green. She has an athletic build and even the clothing she is wearing shows off her curves. Her face looks serene and her lips full like little pillows. They look kissable.
‘She’s gorgeous.’ Drax says, ‘There is something special about her Jax. I want to keep her.”
‘Drax, we spoke about this, we don’t want a mate, remember?’
‘I changed my mind. I want this one.’
‘Can you reach her wolf?”

‘She’s there but it’s faint. Hurry Jax!’
I am rushing to the pack hospital and once I arrive there is staff there with a wheelchair and gurney. I placed her on the gurney and Matt showed up at that moment.
“What is going on? You’re saving a Dark Flame warrior?”
I look at Matt, “She’s, my mate.”
“NO FUCKING WAY!”
“Drax says she’s special and wants to keep her now. Traitorous bastard.” I say, shaking my head.
Matt laughs and slaps my shoulder. “Drax probably knows better than you. What happened to her anyway?”
I rub my hand behind my neck. “I didn’t know it was her. I was fighting two other warriors, and a third one was coming from behind. She jumped to push him out the way so he would not attack me, but I was too quick and stabbed her with a silver knife.”
Matt’s eyes widen in disbelief. “You stabbed your mate? When she was saving you? When she wakes up, you are so in the doghouse. Not exactly chivalrous, is it? My advice, grovel and beg and maybe kiss her feet.” He said with a smirk.
“Fuck off Matt. I heard something interesting though. When she collapsed, I heard that fucker Darius
scream out to her. He looked crushed. But the beta called the retreat and said without her, there was no chance they could win and dragged Darius off.”
“They need a woman to win? Don’t get me wrong, women are tough fighters Jaxon, but that’s not something you hear every day.” He says using my name this time. He does that when we are talking to me as a friend and not my beta. “What makes her so special?”
“I don’t know Matt. But I have two questions. First, Darius looked at her as if he had lost his mate. So, is
she his chosen mate? Second, why are they relying on her to win battles?”
“Sounds like you have a lot of discovery you need to do Alpha.”
“Yeah, but first, we need to make sure she survives first.”
