After that, he never showed up again.

Later, I heard that after I pulled my investments, the Lancaster family fell apart.

After I left, Caspian stopped managing the company altogether.

He spent his days drinking heavily, his mind in a fog.

Tessa had dumped him ages ago, and his family was in complete chaos because of him.

His father had a stroke from the stress. His mother cried every single day.

And Caspian himself? He was working at a bar, living like a ghost.

A mutual friend sighed and told me: “One time he got drunk and cried, saying, ‘If I hadn’t treated her that way, would she still be the one standing beside me

now?””

I didn’t answer.

Time flew by.

Grayson and I got married.

On our wedding day, the sun was shining, and the venue was packed with gue

Grayson looked sharp in his tailored suit, his smile radiant.

And as I looked at him, my heart was full of happiness.

guests.

Just as we were exchanging rings, out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of a familiar figure standing in the very

last row of the chapel.

It was Caspian.

He was so thin he was almost unrecognizable, his face pale as paper.

He wore a faded old suit, his eyes hollow as he stared in our direction.

Our gazes met for just a brief moment,

He flinched like he’d been burned, quickly lowered his head, and hurried out.

1 froze for a second.

Grayson gently squeezed my hand and asked softly, “What’s wrong?”

I snapped back to reality and smiled at him.

“Nothing.”

The chapel door closed softly, and Caspian’s figure disappeared into the sunlight.

A year later, one evening, I was organizing files in my study when my phone suddenly buzzed.

It was a message from an old friend.

[Lydia, did you hear? Caspian’s dead.]

I stared at the screen, my finger hovering over the keyboard, unsure how to respond.

Another message came through immediately.

[He found Tessa at her office, grabbed her, and jumped from the nineteenth floor. They both died on impact. It was gruesome.]

My heart clenched. An image of Caspian at my wedding flashed through my mind.

Gaunt, pale, like a wandering ghost.

Back then, the light in his eyes was already gone.

I never imagined that would be the last time I’d see him.

[When did this happen?]

I slowly typed out the question.

[Yesterday, It’s already on the news, but they didn’t give details.]

[Apparently, he’d been stalking Tessa for a while, but she kept avoiding him.]

[Yesterday he stormed into her office. They argued, and then…]

The friend’s message carried a heavy tone.

I put down my phone and walked to the window.

The sunset painted half the sky red. The city skyline blurred into the dusk.

A complicated feeling spread through my chest-I couldn’t tell if it was sadness or relief.

Grayson walked in, holding a cup of hot tea.

He noticed something was off and asked gently, “What’s wrong?”

I handed him my phone.

After reading the message, he was silent for a moment, then took my hand.

“Are you okay?”

I nodded, then shook my head.

“I don’t know. I thought I’d moved on, but hearing this news… it still hurts.”

He leaned against my shoulder without pressing further.

We just stood there quietly until night fell.

A few days later, I went to Caspian’s grave alone.

His parents had chosen a quiet corner for him.

The headstone was simple-just his name and dates.

No photo. No epitaph.

It was as if his entire life had been summed up in a few words.

I placed a bouquet of white Lily down and stood there in a daze.

In my memories, Caspian was still the high school kid.

Wearing a red basketball jersey, his smile bright and carefree.

Back then, I was all he could see.

“You came.”

A hoarse voice came from behind me.

Chapter 8

I turned around to see Mrs. Lancaster standing a short distance away, also holding flowers.

She looked so much older. Her hair was almost completely white, her eyes sunken.

“Mrs. Lancaster…”

I didn’t know what to say.

She gave a bitter smile. “In his final days, Caspian talked about you all the time.”

“He said if he could do it all over again, he would never treat you the way he did.”

I stayed silent, my throat tightening.

Mrs. Lancaster placed her flowers at the grave and said softly, “He went crazy. He’d been crazy for a long time.”

“Actually, from the day you left, he was never the same.”

Her voice trembled.

“But I, his own mother, didn’t notice… didn’t notice how much love and hate he was carrying inside.”

I didn’t know how to comfort her. All I could say was, “I’m sorry.”

She shook her head.

“It’s not your fault. Caspian couldn’t let go.”

With that, she turned and walked away, her back hunched like a withered tree.

When I got home, Grayson was in the kitchen preparing dinner.

When he saw me, he set down what he was doing and came over to hug me.

“You went to see him?”

I hummed in response, burying my face in the crook of his neck.

His faint scent always brought me peace.

“Lydia, let the past stay in the past,” he said softly. “You still have me. You still have our future.”

I lifted my head, looked into his bright eyes, and nodded.

Yes, life goes on.

Chapter 8

Caspian made his own choice. And I’d already chosen a different path.

That night, I had a dream.

In it, Caspian was wearing his high school uniform, standing in the sunlight, smiling at me.

He said, “Lydia, be happy, okay?”

Then he turned and ran off, disappearing into the light.

When I woke up, my pillow was soaked.

Grayson was still asleep beside me, breathing evenly.

I gently kissed his forehead, got up, and walked to the window.

The sky was already turning pale. A new day was beginning.

Caspian’s death was like a stone thrown into a lake-it created ripples, but they quickly faded.

Life moved forward.

And his story was forever frozen in that moment of despair.
