“Really, you can check!” Kaia added quickly. “You can find my brother’s photo online! They’re the real siblings. They look identical! I’m not lying.”Â
The girl’s voice grew weaker and weaker until it broke into soft sobs.Â
“Please don’t kill me.”Â
Luna stood up.Â
She looked at Kaia, her expression a little complicated.Â
“Seriously? Your rich family is that messy?” she muttered. Kids didn’t usually lie well. After a moment’s thought, she walked to the computer. Her fingers flew across the keyboard.Â
Soon, her gaze fixed on the screen.Â
“Interesting.”Â
Horus leaned in and saw the girl’s photo. Then he compared it with Lawrence and smirked. He turned around and said, “Go get the others.”Â
He gave the order calmly. “Bring me that girl.”Â
Horus watched the crying Kaia with quiet interest, then shifted his gaze to the surveillance feed. Maya was moving carefully through the halls.Â
He never expected he would discover the family secret of the Clarks.Â
A nasty little thrill rose in him. Two girls kidnapped. One was the real daughter. The other was an adopted child raised from a young age.Â
He wondered who would Thomas choose?Â
Maya had no idea what was coming. She was wandering through the school hallway.Â
“Wandering” wasn’t quite the right word. She moved more like a cat, staying close to the wall. Every step was careful. Her eyes darted around, and her ears felt like they were straining to catch every sound.Â
The school had changed. Not long ago, it had been loud and full of life. Now it was strangely quiet.Â
She and Phoebe were like two mice, pressing their bodies against the walls, walking on their toes as they searched for a place to hide.Â

Phoebe tugged at her sleeve, uneasy.Â
“Is this really going to work?”Â
Maya didn’t turn around.Â
“I don’t know,” she said. “Let’s hide for now. Walking out here is more dangerous.”Â
She led Phoebe away from the cameras and found a classroom.Â
The door wasn’t locked.Â
Maya gently pushed it open a crack and peeked inside.Â
No one.Â
She pulled Phoebe in quickly and shut the door behind them.Â
The girls crouched down and squeezed under the teacher’s desk.Â
The space was tight. They were pressed close together, knees touching.Â
The front panel of the desk hid them. Only a thin gap remained, just enough for them to see outside.Â
Phoebe’s eyes were red. She looked close to tears. “It seemed really messy out there. Did we run into some kind of dangerous criminals?”Â
Maya gave a quick nod. “Yeah. Something like that.”Â
How could it not be messy?Â
In just 30 minutes, it felt like half the people had vanished.Â
While they spoke in low voices, a dull bang came from outside the door.Â
Maya froze. Her ears were sharp. She immediately recognized that sound.Â
A gunshot.Â
Right after that, a man’s rough voice shouted down the hallway. She could vaguely hear the voice through the wall.Â
“Get down and cover your heads! Anyone who runs-this is what happens!”Â
Maya felt her blood turn cold.Â

She grabbed the stun baton in her pocket so hard her fingers went pale. “They have guns.”Â
Phoebe’s voice shook, but she tried to calm her. “Don’t be scared. I don’t think they want to hurt everyone. They’re probably after money. They’ll want hostages, not bodies.”Â
She wasn’t wrong.Â
Most students had no idea what was going on. The kidnappers were busy rounding them up first.Â
As for the smart ones-the ones who ran or hid-no one had time to deal with them yet.Â
Maya and Phoebe were lucky. For now, they had slipped through.Â
Time passed, second by second. The noise outside slowly faded.Â
Maya’s tight nerves eased just a little.Â
She started thinking.Â
Should we leave? Find a better place to hide?Â
This classroom is too obvious. If someone checked room by room…Â
The thought had just formed-Â
Bang!Â
The classroom door shook from a hard kick.Â
Phoebe stopped breathing.Â
Maya clamped a hand over her mouth. Her other hand gripped the stun baton tight.Â
Bang!Â
Another kick.Â
The third kick followed.Â
The door burst open.Â
Footsteps followed.Â
One step. Two. Three.Â

Maya crouched low, hiding behind the teacher’s desk. Through a small gap, she saw a man’s legs step inside.Â
The footsteps came closer.Â
She held her breath.Â
Those legs moved back and forth in her view, getting closer… closer…Â
Her grip tightened.Â
The moment he reached the desk, she swung the baton.Â
A surge of electricity shot through him. His body went limp, and he dropped to the floor.Â
He struggled, lifting his head, and met a pair of amber eyes.Â
“Damn it!” he yelled, reaching out to grab her hair.Â
Maya didn’t back off.Â
She grabbed a heavy chair beside her and slammed it straight into his face.Â
Crash!Â
He screamed again.Â
“What’s going on in there?” Another voice called from the doorway.Â
