Chapter 180 Family Reunion Gone Wrong

Maya didn’t want anyone to see through her. She leaned her head against his arm and changed the subject. “I’m sleepy, Dad. Today was really scary.”

Raymond looked down at her and sighed. “You really don’t want to talk to me, huh?”

If she had talked to Thomas a little longer, Raymond could’ve pieced together most of her past from what he already knew.

But Maya clearly didn’t want that.

Fine.

He wouldn’t push her.

Raymond wasn’t the kind of pervert who dug into others’ pasts for fun, especially not Maya’s.

Even if he found out, it wouldn’t make him happy.

Maya said she was exhausted, but after everything that happened today, she wasn’t sleepy at all. She was wired, full of energy.

The moment the car stopped, she jumped out first and ran ahead.

“Mom!”

After hiding and running around at school all day, Maya looked like a mess. Wendy, on the other hand, smelled clean and nice. She pulled her daughter into a tight hug.

Then she sniffed; Maya smelled awful.

She looked up and saw Alfred, who looked just as messy, and Toby, who was usually neat and polished, now completely disheveled.

Wendy was surprised.

“Did you kids fight wild dogs or something?”

The three siblings were speechless.

Wendy always says the wildest things.

George was the last to get out of the car, dragging his feet.

He walked over with his head lowered.

At first, Wendy didn’t even recognize him.

George pressed his lips together, then forced a smile, trying to sound cheerful.

“Mom. I’m home.”

The moment he spoke, Wendy recognized that soft, familiar voice. It belonged to her son, who had been gone for years.

“George?” Her voice softened. She reached out and gently held his face, looking at him closely. “Sweetheart, you finally decided to come home?”

She looked him over with concern.

“You’ve gotten so thin. When you went overseas for your study, I told you to order takeout more; don’t cook all the time. Look at you now. You used to be all chubby and soft. Now you’re all skin and bones.

“Oh right, I haven’t seen you in a long time. Edric said you came back a while ago. What have you been busy with?”

The questions came one after another, making George’s head buzz.

He opened his mouth, trying to answer.

“I… I’ve been…”

George racked his brain. Before he could say anything, Alfred jumped in to cover for him. “George works in law enforcement,” he said.

“What?” Wendy froze, completely stunned. “Son, when did you get a job like that?”

A police job was solid. Respectable. The kind people brag about.

Her eyes almost filled with tears. “My son finally has something I can be proud of back home?”

Honestly, neither her husband nor her son had ever given her much to show off before.

“Law enforcement?” Toby cut in coldly. “You mean beating up cops?”

George shot him an annoyed look.

Toby raised a brow. “What? Am I wrong?”

Wendy looked back and forth between them, trying to process what she just heard.

“I knew it,” she said at last. Then she smacked George hard on the forehead. Her voice shot up. “You little troublemaker! I knew you weren’t doing anything good out there!”

“He gambles too, Mom,” Toby added quickly, not missing the chance to tattle. “And guess what? He was involved in the school kidnapping with Dad’s former colleagues. He was one of the main people behind it.”

The gentle smile on Wendy’s face vanished.

“What?!” Her voice was so loud it almost shook the roof.

George had the most experience dealing with his mom. He scrambled up from the floor, grabbed the edge of her sleeve, and tried to explain.

“I didn’t know she was my sister! And I made up for it, okay? If you don’t believe me, ask Maya!”

He turned quickly. “Maya, Maya-aren’t I the best brother ever?”

Maya ignored him.

She was busy arguing with Alfred.

“You told me George was a cop,” she said, staring at him.

The boy looked anywhere but at her-up, down, anywhere else.

“Say something,” Maya snapped. She reached out, grabbed his head, and growled, “You want me to twist your head off or what?”

“Wow. You’re scary,” Alfred said.

He didn’t sound intimidated at all. In fact, he leaned a little closer and added, matter-of-factly, “You’re mad again.”

He really didn’t get it.

Why did Maya get upset so easily?

I didn’t argue with her.

“You could twist my head off,” he went on calmly, “but from a physics point of view-

“Stop, just stop. I don’t want to hear it!” Maya cut him off, furious. “So you were playing word games with me back then?”

She grabbed him by the collar and shook him hard. “The first time we met, you already tricked me like that!”

Maya honestly hadn’t expected him to pull something like that on her.
