Chapter 191 Talent Under Fire

:

Maya frowned. “Those two aren’t even human. You can’t compare them to me.”

Philbert didn’t reply. He just looked her up and down, then gave his verdict.

“Compared to a human, you’d be better off as a pig.”

He couldn’t understand how this kid could sleep so much.

How could someone her age sleep like that every day?

She woke up and ate.

After eating, she played games. Then she went back to sleep.

Maya’s face fell at that.

She pressed her lips together, a little annoyed.

Philbert watched her expression shift again and again. In the end, she still looked like a soft, easy-to-bully kid. A faint smile flickered in his eyes. Now, he kind of understood why Raymond liked teasing her so much.

She was the only normal person in a group of weirdos. At her age, she couldn’t hide her feelings at all. That made her especially fun to mess with.

In the end, Maya’s classes were finally arranged.

They weren’t things like painting or calligraphy. Even across two lifetimes, Maya had never shown any talent for the arts. Thomas had tried to train her before.

It didn’t work. She just wasn’t built for it.

So this time, Maya raised her hand and asked, “Can I take shooting lessons?”

Raymond had wanted to teach her before. But if they fired a gun in their apartment late at night, the neighbors would definitely call the police.

Up to now, Maya had never taken a proper shooting class.

“Of course.”

The next day, she was taken to a shooting range. The instructor picked out a small, modified handgun for her. The recoil had been adjusted, making it suitable for beginners.

After she put on her gear, the instructor stepped behind her. He bent down slightly and began correcting her posture.

“Grip the handle firmly with your right hand. Keep your index finger outside the trigger guard. Don’t touch the trigger.

“Use your left hand to support your right. Keep your thumbs together.”

Maya followed obediently.

“Stand steady. Feet should be shoulder-width apart. Left foot slightly forward. Relax a little- don’t lock your body. Lean forward just a bit.”

Maya felt like a puppet being adjusted again and again.

In her memory, when her dad and brother shot guns, they never paid attention to posture. Everything they did looked smooth and effortless.

“Lift your head. Use both eyes. Line up the front sight with the target.”

The gun was perfect for a beginner like her. Small enough to hold comfortably.

The instructor had already prepared himself. He expected her first shot to miss, or for the recoil to startle her.

But that didn’t happen.

Maya stayed calm the whole time. At first, she was a little clumsy. Her aim was off. But she picked things up fast. She learned even faster.

Her progress showed right away.

After a few tries, she hit a perfect bullseye.

Maya opened her hand. Her palm was numb and aching.

Even the coach hadn’t expected her to land a perfect shot so quickly. Philbert hadn’t expected it either. A child with this kind of talent?

After watching her more closely, he finally said something he almost never said: “Not bad. Have her attend another class tomorrow. Cancel those useless art classes. She doesn’t need them.”

After that shooting lesson, Philbert clearly saw her differently. At the very least, he no longer treated her like something small and unimportant.

When the lesson ended that afternoon, he didn’t leave right away. Instead, he stayed where he

was.

When Maya walked out, his usually cold face actually showed something close to a smile.

It was completely different from before.

“Sweetie,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing how you grow.”

Before leaving the range, Philbert even told her patiently, “If you have time, you can come here with Alfred and train together.”

Train for what?

Learning how to take someone down with a bullet?

“No way!”

Back at home, George threw his head back and slumped into the couch. He looked lazy and annoyed.

“Why should I go with you two to find Edric? Am I crazy? I finally got away, and now you want me to go back to him?”

He didn’t want to see Edric’s face for the rest of his life.

Toby hadn’t dealt with Edric much. He let out a short, mocking laugh. “You’re scared of him?”

“You’re not?” George shot back. “Then why are you dragging me and Alfred along?”

George didn’t like Toby’s tone at all.

The boy rested his chin on his fingers, his expression half-smiling. “What, you want the three of us to beg Edric to help us to get Maya back?”

“Beg him? I’m not begging anyone.” Toby frowned.

“Why not?” George asked. “Aren’t you worried Grandpa will mistreat her?”

“Because you’ll do the begging for me.” Toby never begged anyone.

“Toby!” George was stunned by how shameless that was. His smile vanished. “There’s no slavery in this day and age, okay? You want me to beg for you? You must have a death wish.”

“Can you two talk like normal people for once?” Alfred cut in. He wasn’t actually a quiet person.

At home or outside, he just didn’t talk much, because everyone else seemed a little crazy.
