Chapter 46

After Elara stormed off with that sarcastic “thanks for your care, husband,” Marcus stood there feeling like

shit.

Maybe he should have just followed her. Canceled the meeting, or better still postponed it.

Yes, he could have done that, he is literally the boss. So he’d have spent the afternoon showing her around Santorini like she’d asked.

But he couldn’t.

He was starting to feel something for Elara. Had been feeling it since the beginning of this trip. Maybe even before that. And he didn’t know if it was love but he was scared. Terrified actually.

He didn’t ever want to have a broken heart. Didn’t want to be vulnerable like that. After what his father did to his mum, he’d swear he’ll never be vulnerable with any woman. So instead he closed up. Became more distant. Pushed her away before she could get too close, got really harsh with her.

It was safer that way.

His phone buzzed. A debit alert.

Gucci. 450 euros.

Then another one.

Designer bag. 280 euros.

She was shopping. That was fine. She was probably still angry but at least she was safe. Spending his money on things that made her happy.

8 PM came.

Elara still wasn’t back.

Marcus picked up his phone. Texted her,

**Marcus:** Where are you?

The message showed as read immediately. But no reply.

Maybe she was still mad at him. Fine. He could wait.

He tried calling at 8:30.

The phone rang once. Then went straight to voicemail. Like she’d declined the call.

9 PM. He called again.

Her number was switched off this time.

Chapter 46

10 PM. Still off.

Marcus started pacing back and forth across his office. Phone in hand. Checking it every two minutes like the screen would magically show a message from her. Panic was starting to set in.

It was almost 11 now. She’d been gone for over six hours. She didn’t know anyone here. Didn’t speak Greek. What if something had happened to her?

Shit.

Everyone knew he’d brought her here. If something happened, if she got hurt or lost or worse, it would be

on him.

Marcus grabbed his shirt. Put it on without buttoning it properly. He headed for the door.

He was just opening it when he saw headlights. A car was pulling up to the house.

He stopped. He stood there, and decided to watch.

The car parked, the engine went off but the interior lights turned on.

Elara was inside. Passenger seat. Ohhh really? She was a passenger princess now?

And there was a man driving. A painfully handsome stranger as he’ll hate to agree. Dark from what Marcus could see. He was smiling at her.

Jealousy hit him like a punch to the gut. And the next thing that followed right behind it was rage.

But he controlled himself. Barely. He just stood there quietly and kept watching.

Elara leaned toward the guy.

Wait.

Did she just kiss him? Right there? While Marcus was standing here watching?

His hands formed a fist like he was ready to fight. His jaw locked so tight it began to hurt.

The guy got out of the car, walked around and opened Elara’s door like he was some gentleman. He helped her out. Went to the back seat and grabbed her shopping bags.

Elara stood there, smiling as she waved him goodbye.

What the hell was going on? Was she kidding him right now?

When the car finally disappeared down the street, Elara turned and started walking toward the house.

Marcus couldn’t keep it in anymore.

“Elara. What the fuck?”

She stopped, looked at him. Calm and unbothered.

“What the fuck what?”

Chapter 46

“Where have you been?”

“Out.” She walked past him like this was a normal conversation. Like she hadn’t just rolled up at 11 PM with some random guy.

“Do you know how worried I’ve been? What if something had happened to you?” He followed her inside. “Why were you in a stranger’s car?” The questions kept piling.

She kept walking. Didn’t even have the decency to give him an answer. She just headed straight for the stairs that led to her room.

Marcus kept going. “Who was that? Where did you meet him? What were you doing all this time?”

Elara stopped on the first step. Turned around slowly.

“Oh, you were worried? I didn’t know you cared, husband.” Her voice was dripping with sarcasm. “I went out like I said. Grabbed some food. Had a nice time.”

Marcus stared at her. “You grabbed food? So how come I didn’t get a debit alert when you paid? I only got alerts for the shopping.”

She gave him a sweet fake smile.. “Oh, you’re monitoring me now? Well, that handsome man paid for my food.”

Handsome man.

The words hit like a slap.

“So that’s why you decided to follow him home?” Marcus’s voice came out colder than he intended. “To thank him for the food? Is that it?”

That got her.

Elara’s expression changed. The fake smile dropped. Real anger flashed across her face.

She turned and kept walking up the stairs.

Marcus grabbed her hand. Pulled her back.

“I asked you a question. Is that why you followed him home?” He stepped closer. Towering over her. “Did you fuck him? Is that why you’re home late?”

He didn’t see the slap coming.

It hit him hard and fast.

Elara’s hand landed on his face. The sound echoed in the quiet hallway.

. “Don’t you ever,” she said. Voice shaking with rage. “Don’t you ever accuse me of that again.”

She pulled her hand free. Turned and continued walking up the stairs.

Marcus stood there. His cheek was hot and red from the slap but his heart was racing. Anger and guilt and jealousy all mixed together until he couldn’t tell which was which.

Chapter 46

He watched her reach the top of the stairs as her hands went to her door handle.

No.

This wasn’t over.

Marcus took the stairs two at a time. Reached her just as she was about to close the door.

He grabbed the door. Held it open. His other hand went to her wrist.
