Chapter 60
Immediately they drove through the gates, Mimi parked the car near the front entrance. Elara was about to open her door and step out when Mimi grabbed her arm.
“Wait! Who are these men?” Mimi asked, staring through the windshield at the two figures standing in the driveway.
“That’s Marcus,” Elara said, following her gaze. “And that’s Dante, his best friend.”
Mimi’s eyes lit up immediately. “Is he single?”
Elara gave her a stunned look, mouth slightly open in disbelief. “Really? That’s your first question?”
“I mean I was going to drop you off and head back home,” Mimi said, already unbuckling her seatbelt with a grin spreading across her face. “But it seems like I’ll be inviting myself in for a drink instead.”
Elara shook her head and ignored her, climbing out of the car. Mimi followed right behind, practically bouncing with excitement.
Marcus was staring at Elara the moment she stepped out. His eyes traveled down her body, taking in the black dress she definitely hadn’t been wearing when she left the house that morning. His jaw tightened slightly, but he didn’t say anything about it. Instead, he walked over and pulled her into a hug despite the fact that they hadn’t properly spoken in days.
“Are you okay?” he asked quietly, his arms still around her. “Where have you been?”
“I’m having a girls’ time with my best friend Mimi,” Elara said, pulling back-slightly to look at him.
Marcus turned his attention to Mimi, his expression softening into something more welcoming. “This is the famous Mimi? I’m Marcus. Nice to meet you.”
Mimi stretched out her hand to shake his, her smile wide and genuine. “I’ve heard so much about you.”
“Hopefully all good things?” Marcus asked, his tone light and teasing.
Mimi tilted her head, pretending to think about it. “Uhmm, 50-50 I’d say.”
Marcus’s eyebrows shot up. “What? 50-50? I’ve been good, haven’t I?”
They all laughed, the tension from earlier in the day melting away for a moment.
Dante stepped forward then, his eyes moving between Mimi and Elara with clear appreciation. “Hi, you look beautiful, he said to Mimi.”
Elara looked at him, raising an eyebrow. “Oh, so I’m no longer beautiful? It’s just my friend now?”
“No, no, I mean you’re beautiful too,” Dante said quickly, holding up his hands in defense. “Both of you are stunning, seriously.”
Marcus gestured toward the front door. “Come inside: Let me get you both a drink.”
Dante and Marcus led the way into the penthouse while Mimi and Elara walked behind them. The

moment the men were out of earshot, Mimi leaned close to Elara and whispered urgently.
“Even if he didn’t invite me, I would have invited myself. That man is fine.”
“Girl, shut up,” Elara hissed back, trying not to laugh.

They stepped into the living room, all creamed colour sofa. Dante headed straight for the bar area, pulling out four glasses and a bottle of wine.
“Wine?” he asked, looking around at everyone.
“Yes,” Mimi and Marcus answered at the same time.
Dante poured three glasses, then moved to pour the fourth for Elara. She held up her hand to stop him.
“Actually, can I get juice instead?”
Dante paused, bottle still in hand, looking genuinely surprised. “Wait what, you don’t take alcohol?”
Marcus chipped in from where he was sitting, his voice carrying a slight edge. “Apparently I’m yet to know what’s wrong with her.”
Elara ignored the comment, accepting the glass of juice Dante handed her without looking directly into Marcus’s eyes.
They all settled into the couches, conversation started flowing easily. Dante was charming and funny, keeping Mimi laughing with stories about Marcus’s more ridiculous business dealings. Marcus seemed more relaxed than he’d been in days, though his eyes kept drifting to Elara, studying her like he was trying to figure out a puzzle.
After a while, Elara stood up. “Can you guys excuse us for a minute? I want to take Mimi upstairs to my room to give her something.”
“Sure,” Marcus said.
Mimi set down her wine glass and followed Elara up the stairs. The moment they reached Elara’s bedroom and the door shut behind them, Mimi exploded.
“Girl, what the fuck!” She was practically bouncing on her feet. “You didn’t tell me it was like this ooo. Is that the man you were calling the devil? If that’s how the devil looks like, me I’ll follow ooo.”
She made the sign of the cross dramatically, looking up at the ceiling. “God, please forgive me,” she muttered.
Elara was laughing now, shaking her head at her friend’s antics.
“By the way,” Mimi continued, “where’s the bag you said you got for me. I can’t wait to see it.”
Elara walked over to her suitcase from Santorini, the one she still hadn’t bothered to fully unpack. She crouched down and started rummaging through it, pushing aside clothes and toiletries.
While she searched, Mimi flopped down on the bed. “Mehn, I like that Daniel guy.”
“Dante,” Elara corrected without looking up. “At least know his name before liking him.”

“Well whatever, it doesn’t matter,” Mimi said dismissively. “Me, I like him. He’s so sexy and he’s my type.”
Elara stopped what she was doing and turned around, staring at her friend in disbelief. “You’ve liked five men just this evening alone, and all five were your type. Mimi, the fuck, pick your poison and stay one place.”
“Okay, okay, I’m serious now, Elara.” Mimi sat up straighter, her expression shifting to something more genuine. “I kinda like him. Do you think you’re open to having me as your sister-in-law?”
Elara finally found the charm bag buried at the bottom of the suitcase. She pulled it out and turned to face Mimi, the expensive little bag dangling from her fingers.
The moment their eyes met, they both burst into loud, uncontrollable laughter.
