Chapter 226 ReloadÂ
He pulled out a gun, and Maya turned her head slowly to face him. Her expression was still blank No fear. no flinching. She clearly knew what a gun was. The calm was unexpected.Â
Maya stayed on her knees, looking up at him, her voice low. “Before I die, I want to know how he died Can you tell me that, sir?”Â
She’d already examined the wounds. The knife was insignificant, the blood loss minimal, that shallow cut was practically nothing. The neck was what mattered.Â
Nobody had expected her to speak. Her brother died right in front of her, and she was this composed.Â
“That useless Liam. I told him to handle it and he couldn’t even commit to one stab.” The man laughed derisively. “I figured he wouldn’t follow through.”Â
The gun pressed against the back of Maya’s skull, and he told her the rest with undisguised hatred. “So I called in someone else. Two hundred yards out. One shot straight through the artery in his neck. Blood everywhere. I’m guessing your daddy would love to see this.”Â
Oh.Â
That tone. So this was one of Raymond’s enemies. That explained it.Â
“So the shot came from over there?” She pointed toward the unfinished building nearby, taking a casual guess. “From the roof?”Â
Maya was grateful she was this young. They’d never think to guard against her. And they were right not toÂ
She wasn’t superhuman. There was nothing she could do right now. So answering a question cost them nothing.Â
“Sixth floor.”Â
“Okay. Thank you for telling me.” Maya lowered her head, wooden and distant.Â
She committed it to memory.Â
The instant the man’s finger tightened on the trigger, Maya chose to reload.Â
“Confirmed.”Â
Cold, neutral, flat. For once, the system’s emotionless tone brought her a wave of calmÂ
“Upon reloading, today will reset from the beginning. Additionally, at midnight, once this day ends, you will be sent to a different point in time.Â
“Are you sure?”Â
“Yes, I’m sure. If I don’t reload, he’s about to shoot me in the head.”Â
“…Fair point.”Â

The system had told her about this ability when it first came to her A cheat code. The power to reload and start over, like a video game. Limited to the current day only. One reset.Â
The side effect was that she might be dropped somewhere unknown, in an unfamiliar time and place. When that period ended, she’d be sent back.Â
When she’d first heard about it, she hadn’t felt much of anything. It seemed like a boring gimmick. Reload, redo, like playing a game.Â
Die and respawn, mess up and undo. Because of the bug that might fling her into some random space-time, she’d never planned to use it.Â
The system chimed again. Every hand on the clock pointed to twelve. A confirmation prompt before her eyes.Â
Maya opened her eyes and bolted upright in bed.Â

The window was dark. The base was silent. Only a single light at the far end of the hallway was still on, its glow leaking under the door.Â
She sat there, dazed. The jolt was so sudden that her mind went blank for a beat.Â
Before all this, she’d quietly told herself that none of it mattered. This world, who was good, who was bad, none of it was her problem. The sky could fall and it wouldn’t concern her. She wasn’t anyone’s savior.Â
But it seemed like this time, she was actually going to try being George’s.Â
The fog cleared. She threw open her door and stormed down the hall to find him, pounding on his door with both fists. “Get out here!”Â
The banging was loud enough to shake the walls, the kind that said she’d break the door down if he didn’t open it. Everyone else in the base was asleep.Â
George opened the door. His collar was crooked, his whole body limp and rumpled, like a cat dragged out of its blankets. His eyes were barely open, brain still offline.Â
Maya launched herself at him, arms locked around his waist, face buried in his chest. His pajamas were cotton, soft, still holding his body heat. Warm. Alive.Â
Thank god.Â
Her shoulders trembled. She pressed her face into the fabric and the words poured out in a breathless rush, too fast, like she was afraid time would run out. “George, I don’t care who it’s for, please, promise me you won’t die. Don’t die, don’t die, don’t die.Â
“I’ll do whatever it takes. I’ll work harder. I’m not useless. But please, for everyone’s sake, please just stay alive.”Â
“I really, really care about you.”Â
George stood in the doorway with her arms cinched around him, his body rigid, his brain still catching up. He heard the flood of words crash into him and couldn’t process any of it. That last line, though, the raw,Â

unguarded honesty of it, sent heat creeping up his ears and across his face.Â
Like someone had poured hot water down his throat without warning. His amber eyes went wide.Â

“O-okay. Got it.” His voice had gone soft. He raised his hand, still a little stunned, and gently touched the back of her head. His palm settled against her hair and held there. “But something’s really off with you right now, kiddo.”Â
